Pope Francis' new encyclical "Fratelli Tutti" is a tour de force of Catholic Social Teaching for our world in 2020. He calls us to be brothers and sisters to all, overcoming differences as we encounter the "other." Here's a brief overview of the document.

Peace be with you Father and I will pray for you. Why not spend some time in this video addressing or “dialoguing” about the concerns of those ordinary people who are practicing Catholics? Why did the Holy Father not answer the Dubia? That would be a loving Fathers action. I answer all my sons questions for clarification because of love. I believe you should clarify your position on things as you are increasingly coming across as an apologist for those against the Catholic faith (although I know this may not be your intention). You can guess the concerns of people with this new document so why not help those people and acknowledge their issues. God bless.

The answer is this - the answer to the Dubia Cardinals are in the text of Amoris Laetitia -- they just don't like it -- tough - they owe obedience to it.

@@angelicdoctor8016 I agree that one needs to be obedient but one also needs to be clear on what to do and an official dubia is simply looking for clarification. God Bless Pope Francis and guide him and me and you to Jesus. We are all in this valley of tears together my friend. God bless.

I consider myself a conservative man, meaning that I don't like any change or action that isn't based, carefully planned, thought through and well reasoned. However, solidarity, charity, fraternity, equality - I do think that we have forgotten about those in our world. I'm looking forward to reading the full Fratelli Tutti. I see it as very counter-cultural in a way that the Pope "calls out" a lot of us who ordered our lives and communities too much under the "mantras" of earthly efficiency and even more so - materialistic profitability. A lot of the language that our Pope uses is great since he tries to take it back from the Godless regimes that have bastardised it in times past and alienated the Truth behind it. Solidarity isn't socialism, fraternity isn't communism. No political doctrine can confiscate those words unter its own "ism". Those "isms" idolised humans as such, neglected our fallen nature and need for divine guidance. In reality- It's all about being mindful of the "Imago Dei" in each person. A well known saint once said - No one is made so entirely out of mud that you couldn't find a gold nugget inside of them. Whatever are our disagreements and however serious they are, let us remember to disagree as brothers. Whatever our problems and ills our, let us at least try our best to help as brothers. I enjoy your videos fr. Cole. They are scholarly and done with a lot of technical skill. I'd like to see one on this "hustle" culture that's very popular on KZfaq and amongst youngsters. Also, if I may, I have a feeling you'd enjoy reading "Tools for conviviality" by Ivan Illich if you haven't already. It's a "spicy" book that has some relevant points for our time. Kind regards, Luka

@@stephenkamau4700 there is no salvation without brotherhood, or in other words : solidarity and caritas as lived expression of your faith! If you think that this is communism, well that's certainly one reason why Jesus was captured and executed. Then you can call Jesus the first communist. Have you ever been to Europe? Then you might know, how political communism really was. We in Europe care for our citizens. We live solidarity here and the Catholic church has had a big influence on social laws. Our Pope is well aware of this.

I dont understand the disdain against individual and unique cultures for maintaining their identity that seems to be prevalent in a lot of modern discourse, seems a bit one sided to blame the ancestors of a people for having their own way of life even if they're friendly and charitable to others. Look at Sweden or Germany for example, it seems like at some point it became incorrect to notice how much take and how little give is happening with the waves of migrants and refugees. When does kindness become pathological altruism?
@belakovacs7013
@belakovacs7013 3 жыл бұрын
There should be no disdain up until it's a basis of division. Remember, there will be neither Jew nor Greek in heaven. The Catholic Church tolerates and loves many rites of many particular churches, so an accusation of being the enemy of unique cultures is off. Gal 3: 26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

That does make one think it as such if we only take the values of liberty, equality and fraternity as exclusively Masonic. Indeed the words may echo the cries of the French Revolution (which also gave us a huge share of Catholic martyrs); nevertheless, it remains valid that whatever is good comes from God.

Mostly implied. Church Fathers? There are mentions of St. Irenaeus, St. Basil, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. The Gospel? One chapter speaks of the Good Samaritan. Sin? Social sins such as discord and violence. The Devil? He is at work in discord. Salvation? It involves the salvation of the entire human person, and so the work of dialogue and fraternity is a work of mercy, a work of bringing the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

Paragraphs 173 and 257 mention the United Nations: 173: In this regard, I would also note the need for a reform of “the United Nations Organization, and likewise of economic institutions and international finance, so that the concept of the family of nations can acquire real teeth”.[151] Needless to say, this calls for clear legal limits to avoid power being co-opted only by a few countries and to prevent cultural impositions or a restriction of the basic freedoms of weaker nations on the basis of ideological differences. For “the international community is a juridical community founded on the sovereignty of each member state, without bonds of subordination that deny or limit its independence”.[152] At the same time, “the work of the United Nations, according to the principles set forth in the Preamble and the first Articles of its founding Charter, can be seen as the development and promotion of the rule of law, based on the realization that justice is an essential condition for achieving the ideal of universal fraternity… There is a need to ensure the uncontested rule of law and tireless recourse to negotiation, mediation and arbitration, as proposed by the Charter of the United Nations, which constitutes truly a fundamental juridical norm”.[153] There is need to prevent this Organization from being delegitimized, since its problems and shortcomings are capable of being jointly addressed and resolved. 257: Since conditions that favour the outbreak of wars are once again increasing, I can only reiterate that “war is the negation of all rights and a dramatic assault on the environment. If we want true integral human development for all, we must work tirelessly to avoid war between nations and peoples. To this end, there is a need to ensure the uncontested rule of law and tireless recourse to negotiation, mediation and arbitration, as proposed by the Charter of the United Nations, which constitutes truly a fundamental juridical norm”.[238] The seventy-five years since the establishment of the United Nations and the experience of the first twenty years of this millennium have shown that the full application of international norms proves truly effective, and that failure to comply with them is detrimental. The Charter of the United Nations, when observed and applied with transparency and sincerity, is an obligatory reference point of justice and a channel of peace. Here there can be no room for disguising false intentions or placing the partisan interests of one country or group above the global common good. If rules are considered simply as means to be used whenever it proves advantageous, and to be ignored when it is not, uncontrollable forces are unleashed that cause grave harm to societies, to the poor and vulnerable, to fraternal relations, to the environment and to cultural treasures, with irretrievable losses for the global community.

Can you help me understand how he can speak these things publicly while also publicly allowing the Chinese Communist Party to violate nearly every principle? A Chinese Communist Party who are also literally taking a leadership role in the Catholic Church previously reserved only for the Pope himself. Why not allow the President of the United States and the elected representatives in Washington the same ability to elect leaders in the Catholic Church? A clear bias in favor of collectivism makes his emphasis on the individual cynical at best. At what point does a person lose his God given liberty? I thought that was what the sacrament of penance was for. I get that smaller less developed countries have been and are being exploited but I'd like to hear a sincere answer regarding this obvious moral failing which to anyone paying attention could have disastrous repercussions for generations to come. Is a document like this even worth reading if it ignores these obvious truths? I don't want to make it my job to punish Capitalists for their sins and if that is Francis' intent he should be removed from the Vatican by any means necessary.

@@maribelandrade770 I watched the video and it only left me hungry for more information. CNA wrote a few articles about this deal being renewed recently and included a lot of details I wasn't aware of. I don't know where you are from but as an American I can't imagine the Church having such a role in society as the Church in China has or wants to have. One of the Bishops Francis lifted excommunication on is also a legislator who voted to remove term limits for Xi. I can't imagine a Bishop in the U.S.A. being allowed to also be a Republican member of Congress who votes to remove term limits for Trump and somehow that flies under the radar. Not to mention a Bishop being imprisoned and then going missing and nobody mentions it because they know the GOP was involved. Meanwhile Xi holds power over a government that is actually racist, actually putting people in concentration camps, actually disappearing people, has some of the harshest and cruelest laws, and Francis writes an encyclical that is mostly meant to turn the world's attention to Trump's weaknesses which he thinks are undermining capitalism (which he does not support.) Sorry, but I just don't know how else to interpret this Pope's legacy except to say that he is clearly bad at being Pope. We should pray for him.

@Simon Laberge yes to Fratelli Tutti - no options for Catholics with understanding on this; more details will come from Francis if he wants to say more on civil unions. I would say this - civil unions would need to be differentiated from homosexual unions (which the CDF has already quashed). We could say that two gay men living together as faithful Catholics (only philia and agape love - not eros) would be without sin. Some wacko rightists argue that would be an occasion for sin -- but that is not true, as any occasion where two gay men are alone is not simply an occasion for sin -- it's an insult to their professed chastity as Catholics.
@angelicdoctor8016

@Simon Laberge it's a fair question, Simon -- my understanding, though I need more info, is that there would be certain legal privileges (eg. when one person becomes ill and there needs to be decision making, visitation rights, etc.) -- it's the legal privileges that would be an expression of God's mercy in this sense, since in and of themselves the privileges don't condone sinful acts.

@Ricardo Villamil I'm noting the "technically" and "apparently" in your statement. Perhaps (presuming from the "apparently" that you have not done so already) you should read it and then make a decision as to whether it is "good teaching" or not. The bible tells us multiple times to discern the truth through the Holy Spirit and "test" teaching - it sounds so far to me like neither of you have actually read it first, prayed about it, checked it against the scriptures, and established teaching before criticising it? Not quite sure why you are also putting these comment on my reply to Fr. Casey when I made it clear I'm not a Catholic, so there is an irony that as a none Catholic I am having to tell you (who through at least one of your profiles I am assuming are Catholics) things about the pope's writings and asking you to discern them against the bible, Catholic / Christian teaching, and the Holy Spirit, and effectively defend a Catholic document to you when all I originally did was thank Fr. Casey for the recommendation and summary. So far, if Fr. Casey invited me to a service, or chat over tea I think if the timing was right I would happily accept his invitation. @Ricardo Villamil there is an obvious difference between an encyclical approved by the church leadership and a smut film so your analogy is weak. We are taught by the scripture to beware of false teaching and to use discernment, but you are judging the popes work without reading it, and "putting your faith" in others.. How if you have not read the work with an prayerful and open heart can you judge whom is the false teacher? Again, I would suggest you read it. If God is in you and Pope Francis' words are unworthy, then they will cause you no harm and you can speak from a personal analysis and fair and unbiased judgment rather than another's words on your lips. If God is in you and Pope Francis's words are worthy then God will speak to you through them. I hope either way that God blesses you and fixes your eyes on Him alone.

The death penalty is the only thing I disagree on. While I do believe we need a massive overhaul of our justice system I also believe that there are certain instances where it is warranted. The overhaul I speak of can be a more stringent system of deciding who gets it but doing away with it will do nothing but harm us. We are all brothers and sisters, children of God, IF we are baptized. P. Francis is twisting the actual teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi. We are all definitely creatures of God and, in this, we are a kind of a family and should take care of one another, but again, his misleading/confusing forms of writing would tend to conclude that all religions are the same and that they worship the same God, which is totally wrong. Ask Muslins or Jews, for example, they won't agree that they worship the same God as us or that Jesus is the Messiah, which is essential to be saved: Accepting Him as our Redeemer and Savior.

Yes. We shall live forever under the brightest sun of absolutism and monarchy, the sun that's so bright it actually burdens everyone living under it with pain and misery. In a certain way, some of early Christians can be called revolutionaries, especially the ones amongst the Franciscans. “The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all.” - G. K. Chesterton. And now remember the saying of Saint Augustine: “What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.”

@@Domas04 Human nature is inherently hierarchical-- the opposite of equal-- no matter how much you try to spin it. The structure of the Church is reflective of this immutable reality. Popes are above bishops, bishops are above priests, and priests are above the laity. Does this mean that such a hierarchy is a value judgment; that just because one is higher in an earthly hierarchy, that he is innately favored by God or closer to Him? Absolutely not. We are all endowed with equal view of worth before God. There can be, and often are, laymen who are more virtuous than some bishops. However, blurring the lines between the explicit hierarchical nature of humanity in order to justify rhetoric adopted by the Cult of Reason is indefensible in light of Christian doctrine. We help the poor because they cannot help themselves, as in they cannot be eternally brought to the level of the rich. Jesus told His Apostles that there will always be poor people (Matthew 26:11; also invoking Deuteronomy)-- this was, is, and always will be true. Calling for smashing the "walls" of wealth inequality between classes is a fool's errand because it defies the aforementioned hierarchy of human nature. Marxism and Enlightenment-age liberal principles have all failed because of this.

Which part of Catholic theology justifies using violence to redistribute the produce of one group to the hands of another group? Even in the parable about the man who pays the servants who worked less the same wage, the employer says, "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me?" Not to reduce the full truth of this parable, but it seems plain to me that a person is due a right to his property. How else can the story be justified? That's to say nothing of sharing and caring for your neighbor. But there seems to be a monumental difference between sharing/caring for your neighbor and using state violence to redistribute the produce of others. After all, is a man not permitted to choose how his property will be used?

@@undolf4097 There is 2000 years of what the Church has taught. St Thomas Aquinas has wrote the doctrine of the Just War. Pope JP2 has restricted the death penalty. Pope Francis has negated the use of the death penalty. But what is two Popes' teachings compared to 2000 years of Magisterial teaching ? They have no right nor authority to restrict or negate past teachings especially when they are not even Doctors of the Church like St Thomas Aquinas. Their theology aren't as deep and powerful as a Doctor of the Church. The death penalty is allowed when it is exercised for the common good of society. Thou shall not kill is not a blanket ban on killing. If an enemy invade your country do you take up arms and kill the invader or in cases of self defense? The 10 commandments came from the OT. There are plenty of examples when the Israelites wage war on their enemies and when they are faithful to God, He helped them win battles. The enemies of the Jews are killed. Didn't David killed Goliath with God's blessings ? Also look at the battle of Jericho. So in summary look at what the Church has taught for 2000 years especially when it's coming from The Magisterium. If a Pope is not speaking Ex Cathedra, you don't have to listen to him.

To have a vision for a compassionate life for all in this world is kind, indeed loving. Hiding the answer to the suffering experienced in it is NOT! And offering alternate solutions is diabolical! Jesus Christ is the Alpha and Omega, Beginning, End, all in all. God bless you Friar.

Your wrong in your logic. Your misreading may be caused by the devil. Who is this encyclical written for? Is it not meant for us Catholics? Is the message expressed in the video not in the Gospels? Is it not Christ's commands to love one another and to be perfect as the Father is perfect? We as true catholics don't need to be reminded that the Pope is the Vicar of Christ, or that whatever he writes comes from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. You sound to me like protestants wanting to repeat the name of Jesus as if it was a mantra. Only Hindus need to say the name of the god they're praying to, for they have thousands. We as catholics know our ground, God is one and Triune, we know who He is as introduced by our lord. Everything coming from the holy Church, including Vatican II, is from God's, he hasn't appointed any other interpretating authority than his Church. Are we saintly people to correct what comes from the chair of Peter? Are you saintly? So if you're not a Saint, why would any true catholic listen to your misguided thought? Our hearts are burning and longing for our Triune God, He satiblished his Holy Church and whatever it comes from it should be taken as inspired by God himself. If there's something wrong, then we pray for wisdom and Most of all Charity to point out the possible mistakes, just as Christ instructed.

@@umatveg Who is this written for? That is a good question. The Encyclical doesn't say does it? There is no traditional "TO THE BISHOPS PRIESTS AND DEACONS CONSECRATED PERSONS AND THE LAY FAITHFUL ON FAITH." Only "ON FRATERNITY AND SOCIAL FRIENDSHIP." So I ask you who it is written for? Is it an open letter to the world? I appreciate your question. I will meditate on it and hope to guess correctly as I and the faithful do with most of what comes from this Papacy.

What about Encyclicals like Rerum Novarum? Holy Spirit shows up 0 times, God the Father shows up 0 times too. Benedict's Deus Caritas Est mentions Holy Spirit a grand total of 2 times, but Eros (erotic love) 94 times. Simply hitting cntrl-F as criticism is a poor shot, as by the same logic, you'd be condemning "great" Encyclicals with similar word counts.

Hi, father Casey. I'm new to the Catholic faith. How am I to understand, or navigate, between your positive understanding of the Fratelli Tutti, and Bishops Schneider's and Vigano's negative response? Are you all correct, or should I choose a side? Or am I as a newbie to the Church not to care, since it's above my understanding? These are honest questions, and not irony. God with us.

Hello, if I may contribute! In Catholic life and thinking, many (but not all) issues are resolved with a both-and (instead of an either-or) solution. I'd give two pieces to advice. First, try to avoid extreme and sensationalist channels of any leaning. Second, avoid tempting dichotomies or oversimplified solutions or dismissals to problems. Choosing a "side" right now is, in my opinion, very counterproductive, intellectually and spiritually. A lot of the rhetoric today seems to be "throwing out the baby with the bathwater", as the idiom goes. Most importantly, as Cardinal Arinze said, "Our faith is in Christ, not the Pope" (or any of the bishops). Lead a life of love and holiness, away from pride and outrage, and things will become clearer!

Mikki S , good honest post , expose yourself to differing views , full disclosure I am Traditional Latin Mass and Byzantine Catholic Rite , so I lean toward Taylor Marshall, Patrick Coffin , that side of the spectrum . Get in touch with a Latin Mass parish if you can , the human touch and interaction will be helpful. I compare the spiritual journey as a drunkards walk , you will stumble and come across things that you will look back on and wonder aloud what the ----- was that ?!. Ask for and offer prayers for your yourself and those around you , pray the rosary and chaplet of divine mercy , read scripture , you will make mistakes of all kinds , do not be discouraged , look at the lives of the saints and martyrs as examples and inspirations . Your faith is work but it is also a source of comfort and joy, your in my prayers , God bless you and yours.

If I tell someone where they should go but do not assist with directions to get there or even how to get to the highway, have I helped them? Of course not. Politics will not change in our society until each of us acts with Christian principles. In the current environment this sounds like a cry like “can’t we all just get along”. I agree with the Holy Father and as a society we may likely change with baby steps. Let’s focus on the upcoming election: pray for our nation because God has an immeasurable ocean of Mercy for us all.

The command was "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,". There is an over emphasis on dialogue (to what end?) , Ecumenism and recognizing the good in other religions. Our mission is not to find what truth exists in hinduism or islam but to bring them to the One True Lord. Man's intrinsic worth from God, his fallen nature and his redemption through the cross cannot be just glossed over as if they are self evident. These truths need to be proclaimed in the name of Christ. The Church is becoming more and more uncomfortable to ask others to denounce their false worldviews.

think of it this way - goodness is existence that ought to be present (by God's will) -- this it the Augustinian/Thomistic view. Now, today we have prisons globally with opportunity to reform -- this is a greater good, since killing a human (without God's explicit permission) is to cause a LACK OF A LIFE that ought to be present -- a grave evil. The death penalty was ONLY permitted to protect the community from serious threat -- this threat doesn't exist today, thanks to current prison systems.

The irony, it is God who continues the division of Nations (CCC 57). The Church’s Mission is the proclamation of the Gospel until our Lord return. (CCC 58, 1040-1048, Mathew 28:19,20, Daniel 2:44). The Ultimate Trial of the Church and how we will be saved is instructive, see CCC 675-677.
