Beautiful singer! Very musically/dramatically expressive, extraordinarily beautiful timbre, solid technique. And this aria is a pain in the ass: It’s very, very challenging to get all the fine differentiations he’s getting in those high tessituras. If this is representative, he certainly deserves the kind of big career he is having (Wien, Berlin, Paris, London, the Met). Major talent.

De Tommaso sings very well, with great variety of dynamic shading, from pianissimo to fortissimo in line with his unique instrument. I believe he has a bright future ahead, if he continues to make good choices. Great singing!

He reminds me of mid-career Richard Tucker. Marginally darker with less edge -- and with some of the same affectations.
@sw511411 ай бұрын
I hear what you mean referring to Tucker. But from the beginning Tucker had a larger more ringing, secure voice, which had a laser like high note stability. There is something not quite settled with these high tones . Not hitting them in the center of the pitch some.
@ER1CwC11 ай бұрын
@@sw5114 I actually think Tucker had quite a light timbre and a slim column of sound at the beginning. He always had a driven quality which can turn some people off, but it perhaps gave him more dramatic possibilities. I would need to listen to Tommaso more to form a judgment on his high notes, as I can’t really remember them off the top of my head. But he seems to be a natural singer. A lot seems to come easily to him, but I’m not sure how much is actually the product of knowledge. That might explain the high notes thing.
@sw511411 ай бұрын
@@ER1CwC Enjoyed your comment. True that Tucker’s sound was leaner at the beginning, singing Alfredo and Ferrando’s , but also in the first decade Forza with Callas. He always had a laser top which was perfectly produced. Anyone I’ve ever discussed Tucker with said his recordings were no where near the in house, for thrill and impact. He would go toe to toe with Corelli in the 1960’s -70’s. He was called the American Caruso for a reason. Not just groupies for hype. Had some who never liked his cantorial style and Americanism, but was a superstar regardless. Our new friend has issues at the top and must clean those up if he’d expect to last as Tucker did to the day he died.

@@ER1CwC Agree about the natural thing and his voice. They will want to use him up if not careful.

@@sw5114 The cantorial quality and (I think more problematically) clipped phrasing aside, I do think Tucker’s career was, like Milanov’s, a model to follow. Slow and steady growth, grounded in a firm grasp of his own technique. One cannot last for 30 years any other way! It’ll be interesting to see how Tommaso’s career unfolds. Natural singers who don’t figure out what they are actually doing don’t last after their youth dries up.

Too soon to make that claim, I’m afraid. Too much going on in that vocal upper extremity to say. Needs to clean it up to last. They will load him with too heavy a repertoire and he needs time and seasoning to last.
