Freddie Gibbs was never the same after Piñata He became so consistent with each project While never reaching those heights he still brought it

This Is much more of a fan's classic than a critic's classic it may not have a strong influence on the sound of hip hop, but it definitely has an extreme influence on the greater hip hop fandom

It's still crazy how the hook on Shame sounds like a sample

Timeless record, was slowly getting into rap right around when this album came out and the more styles of rap i've listened to over the years the more I appreciate how well crafted this thing is.

Robes and Broken still slaps to this day. “Leave like the father I never had or a low Caesar, The son he had but ain’t ever wanted like cold pizza” These are some of the most poignant bars Earl Sweatshirt has ever spit. “Running through groupies and boppers I guess I got it honest, and honestly I know I’m out here fuckin up, 7 g of rocks stuffed up in my nuts, 7 bucks an hour wasn’t good enough, so 7 days a week I’m livin in a rush” Gibbs had many moments on Piñata when his rhymes would display such self aware and brutal honesty, which IMHO Broken showed that strength at its greatest alongside Scarface’s verse and Madlibs signature SP1200 styled Watery sample flip. Overall I’m just grateful for the experience of cinematic drug rap at a time where Trap and Soundcloud rap was breeding in the underground.

Interesting as you said how this album didn't really 'influence' rappers or start a new wave but that kinda makes it even more distinctive. Ridiculous replay value and I just love the contrast of Freddie's aggressive, blunt rapping over Madlib's sugary, dreamy beats. I can't think of any other hip-hop albums that sound like Piñata, it's gotta be up there among the best of the decade.
