Fantastic reaction! Many songs and artist are called great, but this true greatness. Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe were some of the best singers in genres of music. They did a whole album together I suggest you check out The Golden Boy - Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe. This was the first collaboration from someone in the pop/ rock world with an opera singer. Freddie Mercury did not just the song, he and the pianist in the video, Mike Moran, also composed the song.

OH, I didn't know that the pianist here (and at La Nit) was Mike Moran! (I know who he is, I just didn't know what he looked like.)

Freddie’s sheer passion always makes me cry. Words really can’t describe this. I burst into tears when I first heard it, when it was originally released. Love your reaction to two superb performers.

Just for your information, Montserrat Caballe(prounced CABALLL-YAY, I believe)is/was considered by many, for the purity of her notes and voice control, to be one of the greatest Operatic "Diva's( I use the term in it's original sense here), ever. Freddie first heard her in 1983 at Coent Garden Opera House in London , where he had gone to witness Luciano Pavarotti perform. From the moment of her first aria, Freddie was overwhelmed and totally smitten by her voice. He was determined even obsessive in his desire to meet her and his management reached out to hers and a meeting arranged. The venue was to be in Barcelona, Montserrat's birthplace and hometown. The story is that Freddie, already a global superstar by then, was incredibly nervous before the actual meeting, restlessly pacing up and down like a caged animal. Fretting over whether or not she would actually like him, he had not counted on her genuine warmth of character and open-mindedness. She too was nervous, yet within minutes of greeting each other there was palpable chemistry between the two. Freddie went on to compose "BARCELONA" as a tribute to Montserrat's birthplace and hometown, but also commemorating their first meeting and the start of a devoted friendship. Apparently when the duet was first proposed, Montserrat asked a lttle sharply, "What's the matter...? Why do you only want to sing one song with me..?" Freddie stared at her unable to speak as she continued, "How many songs are there in a rock music album, anyway...?" "...er....10 or so, usually ", was his mumbled reply. He was stunned by her prompt imperious response, "Fine...! So we will do 10 songs then...!!". When their intended collaboration was first learnt of, it was greeted with scepticism and derision. To attempt to combine Rock and Opera in a single piece was an absurd impossibility, was the automatic response. The performers came from completely different musical worlds and dire consequences for each, were forecast. Pavarotti even went so far as to accuse Montserrat of betraying her operatic heritage. None had perhaps understood the duo's combined talents and shared passion for music, nor their individual flare for the dramatic..Fortunately the pair were steadfast, determined to proceed with their project, sink or swim.. The video clip you responded so pricelessly to, was I believe , shot at the first ever, public performance of the duet, which took place at the prestigious "Ku Club" on the island of Ibiza in 1987. As we have witnessed it was greeted with wild, instant, rapturous acclaim. They had not only succeded in their collaboration, they had superceded even the most optimistic hopes. They had Not "sunk" nor even "Swum", they had taken flight, soaring dramatically and forever decisively silencing their critics and detractors. Later that year with the duet already gaining popularity, Freddie and Montserrat were approached by the comittee formed to mount a bid by the city of Barcelona to host the 1992 Summer Olympics. They immediately and enthusiastically agreed and the bid was successful of course. Perhaps the most memorable performance of the celebrated piece, took place at the "La Nit" Centro de Cultura, Barcelona, in October of 1988 as part of the lavish, joyous celebrations to officially welcome the "Olympic Flag" to the city. The staging included Operatic standard backing singers, full symphony orchestra, floodlit fountains and massive fireworks display(it is also available to view here on KZfaq). "Over the top"....? Maybe....Extravagant...? Undoubtably....A Masterpiece of Sheer Magnificent, Musical Magic, which complemented perfectly the talents of the vocally powerful duo, in no way overshadowing them....!! "BARCELONA" became not only the "Official Anthem " of the city for the games, but an international chart topping hit as well. Sadly, both are long since gone, Freddie in 1991 and Montserrat in 2018, yet their devoted friendship remained until the end. Thanks to technology we can still enjoy and even thrill to this Triumphant Anthem...Freddie once told "Montsy" as he affectionately called her, that " You Are Music...and Music is Not governed by Age..!" How True that is even now 37 YEARS after the event....! "VIVA, BARCELONA....!!!".

This was in the Barcelona Olympics. Unfortunately Freddie had passed before and didn’t have a chance to do it there with her.
