Freddie never had any vocal training. He taught himself over the years how to control his breath and worked on his voice to see where it cooks take him. If you notice as time went on his voice became stronger and he was able to flow through one register to another. This song was made to give the opera singer, Monserrat when they were going to meet for the first time to show her what he could do. React to Barcelona- the collab with Monserrat. This was his demo of the part Montserrat Caballe was to sing on one of their tracks from the Opera album Barcelona. This was her Soprano part, he was giving her guidance on what her part would be in the song. It's awesome to see just how diverse he is!

Not bad for someone who has never taken the singing lessons. In 2016 scientific study confirms Freddie Mercury had an unparalleled singing voice. He was able to create a faster vibrato 7.04 Hz and several more layers of harmonics than anyone else. Freddie was using a subharmonics by vibrating his ventricular folds, a technique usually found only in Tuvan throat singers. One of the conclusions from the studies was that "Mercury was vibrating something in his throat that even Pavarotti couldn't move".

According to Mike Moran, they were just playing around because they needed a B side for the Great Pretender. It wasn't done specifically for Montserrat Caballe, contrary to belief!... but this was sent to Montserrat for her to hear. She fell in love with it and had words put to it which she sung for Freddie as a surprise at one of her shows. She thanked Freddie from the stage....and he was blown away. There is a small clip where she is waiting on stage with Mike waiting for Freddie to come on...and she rushes to him.. it looked like a beautiful moment. They did however duet together with this song and it is called Ensueno rather than Freddie's title of Exercises in Free love. They both had huge respect and admiralty for one another and became really good friends. He wrote Barcelona for them because Montserrat said how about doing a song about her home...Barcelona. It was expected to be used for the Barcelona Olympics, but Freddie told Montserrat and I quote "he would be no longer here in 2 years" as in Montserrat's words in an interview she did. However, the song was used. She said to Freddie she would like to do an album....so Freddie being Freddie said "I had to put my money where my mouth was". He said it was a very different way of writing, also, he didn't really know Montserrat at the beginning to know how she worked. But I do know he was very proud of this accomplishment. Freddie really loved Opera too, and Montserrat was his favorite Soprano singer saying "Montserrat is the greatest singer, she is the music"... Just beautiful. They did Barcelona, Ensueno, Guide me home/ How can I go on, The Golden Boy, Le Japonaise and The Fallen Priest from the songs I can remember on the Barcelona Album.

Yes. Where have you been?! Barely tickled the Queen catalog. I agree, would have liked to see Freddie singing this on a hidden camera. I don't think there's much Freddie didn't try...either thru Queen or on his own. But with Monserret (while he knew what he was facing with his health battle) it was a dream he found and willed himself to complete. A combo of sheer fortitude...and JOY.

This is outstanding and really shows Freddie's versatility and range. Barcelona is a duet with Freddie and Monserrat Caballe, a female opera singer that has a very good video of him singing opera.

this was b side to great Pretender in 87 Mike said he forgot he needed one! freddie said to him play something classical and I'll improvise! he thought it was funny to pretend to be a saprano singer on the back of Pretender! this was released before he met Montsarat who is a world class saprano! to brake the ice freddie decided they would preform this and she mmight find it funny she completly missunderstood and thought it was for her! told them she liked it very much and asked Mike to write out all the music and she would pick it up in a few hours and she would preform it at Covent garden in 3 weeks and mike would play piano! she did perform it,as a surprise for Freddie she wrote words to it they later worked on it and it became ensuno when they were doing the album she had very little time to work with them so they would complete a demo with freddie singing her parts in falsetto and wait for her feed back or she would learn it as it was if she liked it

Awesome reaction! Freddie Mercury always did something like this live as well during Queen's Impromptus. A good one is Rock In Rio Blues - Queen live in Rio 1985 or Impromptu - Queen live at Wembley 1986. He is mimicking a soprano voice. This is a demo, later on the song was developed and there he sing in male opera voice.

This song does not exist live, but you can hear his falsetto live during the Impromptu part of the Queen concert in Rio (Rock in Rio) in ‘85. Another hood version of it is from the Majic Tour in 1986 at Wembley. Enjoy!

Great reaction, thanks! Mike Moran played the piano on this piece and helped him write the operatic songs that he later sang with Montserrat Caballe on the Barcelona album. This was a demo for her and she later performed Exercises in Free Love at one of her recitals. They did a full album together that did rather well. There is video of him performing Barcelona with Montserrat that is definitely worth checking out. Also, I believe she sang Barcelona at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics with Freddie's backing track since he had passed in 1991.

87 Freddie was supposed to be doing his second solo with mike He wanted to do a cover of great Pretender first This was the b side released feb When he was touring KOM with Queen in spain he said montsarat was the best singer he had ever heard They had started recording the solo and montsarat got in touch wanting to meet him So they went to Barcalona Played this as an ice braker..she performed it with lyrics at covent garden..he agreed to do a single but was still doing his solo That was put to one side and they did Barcalona album
