Freddy Starr had a troublesome childhood. By his own account his father attacked him when he was four years old, while drunk and aggressive, slinging him into a wall which broke both legs. After this incident he spent two years in foster care. This early trauma probably explains why he had such a troubled persona. He certainly was talented and intelligent with it. He was so funny - so sad that his life ended in poverty and poor health. RIP.

Possibly, but, did anyone tell him? Would he believe it if they did? When someone talks about God the Father, people who've been traumatised by their earthly fathers find it difficult to see the Almighty as anything other than a bully and someone who hates them. Very sad, I think. Had he and others like him known the LOVE of God their lives could be so different - like forming lasting relationships, having purpose in life - plainly having a life!

If you deny the dark side of Freddie then you are idolising a false god. Admitting he was a terrible human being doesn't mean he wasn't talented. You can't label this as gossip just because you want to believe Freddie was perfect. This is why they say never meet your heroes because they seldom fail to disappoint. Many comedians were incredibly unfunny and unfriendly in real life. Don't confuse the onstage persona with the real person. You watched Freddie Starr on stage but it was Frederick Leslie Fowell who went home to his wife and kids.

@@dickdastardly5534 Never met him. But people who did have talked about him for years. And he had some candid moments on occasion. I hope this isn't some feeble defence of Freddie as in "You didn't know him, so what do you know?". I didn't know Hitler, but I do know he LOVED dogs and he HATED Jews. I know because reliable sources reported on it. Even though I wasn't born until 20 years after his death I know these things. And I know how Freddie was perceived by many who worked with him and knew him personally. Unlike many on this thread I'm not going to call them all liars just because I thought he was hilarious.

@@trevorberridge6079 No I wasn’t looking to line you up for some sort of troll attack lol, I was just interested to know as I knew a fellow who ran a pub in Richmond and and Tommy Cooper used to go there and he liked a drink. But as we say in Wales street Angel kitchen Devil his wife suffered at his hands sadly, there are many accounts of comedians being total arseholes and a story about Tommy Trinder stuck in my mind how he was too tight to by a drink for anyone and willingly expected his fans to buy him drinks when he went to a pub. I’m guessing by your response you have been attacked for expressing your opinion which i guess is a sign of the times. I spoke with Lee van Cleef daughter (the actor in the spaghetti westerns) At home his alcoholic violent behaviour from his daughter’s account was relatively unknown and he was violent -this seems a familiar theme with a lot of celebrities. I worked freelance for a few years for a very popular hotel in the Caribbean in the early 90's where Freddie Starr was a regular guest. I was sometimes requested to have dinner with the bosses and their vips, and one evening I was fortunate to be asked to attend a dinner at which Freddie was their guest. I had always found him extremely funny on tv, and he was the same in person. He had us in absolute stitches of laughter, plus his blue eyes were really deep and sparkly which made him even more enigmatic. Society would be so much kinder if people only remembered the positive and good that someone in the public eye gave in their lives. Not everyone ages as well as others, and some people sadly have ill health which alters their appearance.. It is so easy to judge and I don't think people easily understand another's demons unless they too have experienced childhood trauma as he did. RIP Freddie, you deserve to be remembered as the national treasure you are. x

A very sad end. So can I take anyone who reads this to Liverpool in the 19 60's particularly to a now famous club in Mathew street the "Cavern". It was early on a Saturday night and Freddie was on stage with the Midnighters, halfway through the set the girl who looked after the coats who I had a rather large crush on at the time came on stage to sing a number with Freddie. Ok it was Pricilla though black was not added then. The song they sang together was "Love Potion Number 9" and the best version ever so much so I can still hear it in my head today, both are now o longer with us but as long as that song is in my head they are standing right there. Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

A girl would be enough information not what colour she was. That's not important to know what colour she was. Why was it important to you. I lived near him in Spain and used to see him regularly sitting and having his coffee and breakfast normally alone. Yes, it was sad to see him and he really was in a self-recluse. Freddie Starr was brought up in an era where a father showing Love, or Compassion to his Sons was almost unheard of, I was brought up by a father who's only joy was to kick or punch the crap out of you when you did something minor wrong, but also show no joy if you achieved something good in school. This upbringing not just mine but thousands of young boys including Freddie's, implanted something so evil and wrong. This being when he became a man and settled down with kids, and something occurred that needed sorting out, like an argument between man and wife, or man and male child, the solution to Freddie and like me was to punch a hole through it, beat the crap out of that other person, it took me to the age of 27 to realise that this behaviour had to stop, it was done by learning to listen to what was going on, and come to a sensible conclusion, it takes a long time to master. Unfortunately Freddie never seeked help, maybe he thought it unmanly. Freddies daughter needs to let go off the sadness she feels, she needs help. RIP Freddie, your the only man who made Ali crap himself. Watch Freddie frightens Ali on You tube,

Starr was known to be volatile by ex's and his daughter yet she went with her heart that saw his core, until it was too much. She tried for years to get a legal separation but he denied her. I met Freddie once in 2003 in a Chinese restaurant in Maidenhead where my friend Pete and myself had to go and drop his ring off to him , I had made it and set the diamonds it was a big blue sapphire lovely Kashmir colour, and my friend Pete’s father a Greek Cypriot Angelo was a friend and lived in Maidenhead near Freddy he had a shop in Hatton garden that I used to make the jewellery for , so we walk in and Freddie is sitting with this young stunning blonde probably a model and asks Pete my friend if he’s been training as he’s into all the martial art stuff trying to keep a straight face my mate says yes ,Freddie now stands up from the table and turns into Bruce lee mode doing all these chops and noises , the whole restaurant is pissing themselves including some of the staff !! It was hilarious I think it was like when Peter sellers did it in pink panther when he fighter with Kato his servant when he got back home , absolutely hilarious he must of kept it going for a while as everyone was in stitches , he was an absolute legend and I was so lucky to of met one of the funniest guys on tv , RIP Freddie you were a legend 🙏❤️❤️

Extremely funny man that i grew up watching in the 80's and i loved him... Very sad to hear about his troubled childhood, however he probably neber sought any help for his issues as ppl didnt back then. His childhood issues then transpired into adult issues where he turned to drink and drugs to mask the pain. And then he became the abuser...its typical lifestyle of the cycle of abuse unfortunately.... I think his family are right to speak out about him...why shouldnt they? And as for all the comments that theyre doing it " for the money"...lol.. What money..Freddie didnt have a pot to urinate in towards the end of his life...get a grip ppl ..

He was always a hero of mine until he came with his support actors and filmcrew to a well-known heritage site in Derbyshire as a filming location where I worked, and was an absolute arsehole, constantly playing up, shouting and yelling at everyone, and pissing off his other actors and the crew. Paul McShane and Derek Deadman however, were absolute gentlemen and treated all the staff very well, and would come and sit and take tea with us at breaks, until Starr turned up and spoiled everything. The "manic" side of him was down to the fact that he kept disappearing every fifteen to twenty minutes into his caravan in an absolutely foul mood, but came out with a big grin and acting the goat. Fowell by name and Foul by nature. They say you should never meet your heroes.

Freddie Star was a one-off - a real Star and brought a lot of joy to many people. Let the man rest in peace. Its easy to criticise someone when they're no longer here. If you or l were accused of what he was accused of - How would you or l feel - How long would we last - Those who live in glass houses - shouldn't throw stones. I would've thought his daughter and partner would've been better than that. Anything for a quick buck eh !!! - and never let the truth get in the way of a good story - Shame on them !!!

Some time in the late 1970s or early ‘80s, a while Porsche 924 stopped and the driver wound the window down and asked me for directions to the Assembly Rooms in Derby. It was Freddie Starr. I recognised him immediately. He was as magnetic a character in real life. But not wishing to behave like a starstruck fool, I showed him the way, and wished him a good show. He thanked me and drove off. As I walked past the entrance to the Darwin Suite towards the Market Place, he was coming out of the box office, and thanked me again with a funny “Found it”. I’ve met a lot of famous people, including Elton John and several royals. Freddie was real. Some years before I answered an advert in the Derby Trader for a sun lamp. When I picked it up from a house in Mickleover, I paid a smart woman, and was about to leave when a black man wearing only a grass skirt suddenly appeared on the stairs brandishing a spear!! He shouted: “Unhand my wife!!” The man was Charlie Williams, another great comic of the period. He made a joke about being “Well done”, so he didn’t need the lamp anymore. I can’t recall how I initially reacted, but we all had a good laugh. Surreal moment. Peace

You have a person of great talent who has a flamboyant lifestyle and unfortunately many are attracted to it for the glamour and money. So many of the wives, not all admittedly, start off as mistress to the star but when he leaves the present wife for the mistress there’s now a vacancy. When the glamour and money stops or is reduced then bitterness creeps in and the ex wife becomes extremely difficult especially when there are children involved. When the star leaves her or dies wives and mistresses show their true colours and rarely can say a decent word about the man who gave them so much.
