Low performing, or Lost Queen? Great opportunity for a late-season swarm install.
Walk-in swarms are the easiest on the bees, but will take the longest time to do.
This is a follow-up to this video: • June swarms take them ...
Recover from queenlessness and hive a swarm without having to expand your apiary.
Why did I use three Colorado Bee Vac capture boxes?
Because if you collect a very large swarm, even with the full screen for respiration, they can suffocate and die. Spreading a large swarm capture through two or three capture boxes results in less stressed honey bees and fewer losses.

Fred, what an excellent example of “voluntarily coercing” a swarm to march into their new home and just in time before the storm. Great viewing!

I said, I don't have time for a 28 minute video. I was wrong. I've been Dunn'ed again! Great videography/editing/storyline. Your extreme close up pan at 14:00 was amazing.

Hi Randy! Early on, I had some scathing comments suggesting that I "not talk" during my videos. Now I regret not narrating so many of my early posts. It's great to see your comment! I'm looking forward to the next conference! :)

Hi Fred, Greetings from Ballater, Scotland… Had the pleasure of speaking with a local Beekeeper at a farmer’s mkt… he uses 12 frame deeps, same varroa mite issues and same treatments as US… his bees are on the “hot” side… temperamental!!! Gr8 video… cheers, Johno…

Great video. Love the "slow" videos you produce and tend to watch them several times. My life is fast enough that I appreciate any excuse to slow down and watch the world (and bees) go by. The closeups of the bees fanning and advertising, "go this way!" were really great. Thank you, Fred! 🙂 - Jeff, Cincinnati, Ohio.

There are lots of comments that come my way regarding what a time-waste some of my practices are. But, for me, it's just plain fun to sit and watch the bees do the work on their own :)

Fascinating video. As an amateur I thought honey bee workers were hostile to other hive workers, kind of like ants from different colonies, but I suppose not in this case.

Nicely explained. If that was here l would immediately put them to work and to draw themselves a box of frames. They are capable to draw 10 wax sheets into combs in less than two days if the conditions are right. But if they already have some drawn frames in then it becomes much slower. There can be only one for the queen to lay and the rest 9 would be finished in a night and a day. Must be nice not having a dearth caused by drought. Pretty big swarm. They are made to build combs and start again

What are the odds of the Queen less hive killing that introduced Queen when she’s not protected with a cage? I figured the guard bees would fight the newcomers.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 7 күн бұрын
Highly unlikely since she arrives with thousands of her own. Would be completely different if I introduced a new unrelated queen.

Hi Fred. Tried to leave this question on your web site. Got no reply from you. This is the first time I used your site. So leaving the question on KZfaq. Winter here now in Brisbane Australia. Bees don’t seem to have much food this time of the year. I am feeding them 1:1 sugar water. My question is does sugar water give the bees toilet problems? I.e. runnie poo. Thanks David Love KD Kurabees.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 5 күн бұрын
I've added this to my list for the Friday Q&A. The short answer is that sugar syrup doesn't cause dysentery, that's related to infections. If your bees having weather that isn't too cold for them to fly, then the sugar syrup by itself is not a problem at all. It's key to use good quality water when mixing syrup and I boil my water first.
