"The Heller Approach" is an acting technique that gives actors a simple yet practical and solid foundation so that actors are ready and empowered with reliable and easily accessible tools to work in any medium. The technique and its application are based on muscle memory and not on past personal experiences.
The amazing technique is born from working actors and directors. It truly frees the artist to access feelings and thoughts that are universal to all humans, helping actors to create the most believable, entertaining characters in a way that is conducive to the fast-paced entertainment industry.
"The Heller Approach" is taught exclusively by Brad Heller, a working actor, director, and acting coach. Group classes are available every Wednesday night and Tuesday days in Los Angeles, California. Private lessons are also available via Skype, Zoom, or in person.
Professor Heller taught for 5 years at UCLA before opening his own acting studio in 1995. Heller's teachings are based on the works of his former teacher and mentor, Don Richardson, who was an original member of the Group Theater, which was the nucleus of Acting in the United States. Richardson's fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Don was one of the Group Theatre students who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about." He directed over 800 television shows in his time.
Don's acting technique became a rescue for Brad Heller because despite having a degree in theater from one of the world's finest theater programs, Boston University School of Theater Arts, and trying multiple acting techniques, Brad could not enjoy the process of acting. Combining Don Richardson's acting technique with the knowledge of anxiety from Dr. Eda Gorbis and lessons from his mentor Academy Award winner Seth Winston, and more, the Heller Approach has become trusted by thousands of students globally.

Stranger Things Fandom edits Hey, Iv cryed many times while acting, and tbh, its really easy imo. Crying is a physical thing. So don't do the stupid imagine your dog dying or something like that. All you have to do is keep your eyes open. I hope that works for you. It works really well for me.

Crying on cue has been such a mystery to me...I've seen all the videos. When I clicked this video I wasn't even looking for crying on cue, I was just wanting to learn about how to evoke emotions. So I tried your method of saying the word "joy" and notice that "tingle". Kept on repeating the word, 5 seconds in I was suddenly in tears.. wasn't even thinking abt crying but suddenly my associations with the word came to life. THIS METHOD WORKS

Wow, this is fantastic! Thank you so much sir! Oh, btw, I'm not sure if anyone has ever mentioned this to you but you have similar mannerisms and facial quirks that Robert Downey Jr. has when he speaks and displays emotion and expression facially. You truly do sir. I've been examining his acting methods, and I think that one of his most prominent acting characteristics is his non-verbal facial communication when he speaks or displays emotion.

How can I make my acting be more than just words? I mean, how do I add more depth and make it realistic without it going overboard and getting almost too much. I always try to live and be the character instead of pretending to be the character, but I find when I do that it often becomes fake and maybe too dramatic Ps thank you! Your videos have helped so much, I'm not from LA (I'm from the uk) and can't afford a lesson but your KZfaq videos are a real big help and I learn a lot from them so thank you :)

KZfaq recommended your video. I've always has a passion for all things film and theatre. I find myself watching the actor, their movements the way they are delivering the lines. Although I have been a member of amateur dramatic groups, I didn't take the learning further. At 51 I'm happy to say I'm off to uni next year to study drama. The biggest reason for this is because I know I'll regret it if I don't.

I think it's important to feel the emotion, but I think putting yourself into the idea of the character and the scene is enough to invoke emotion. When you can't separate yourself from the character in the situation then you can feel the emotion of the character and understanding that characters feeling the motivate of that emotion makes it more real. Some times feeling out of breath is going to make your emotions right at the surface because you are desperate for breath to either unleash the emotion to breath or to catch your breath to calm the emotion. That is my personal approach. While some times taking speeding your breath up ramps your emotions it is that big pause that truly builds it because it's the one second to really feel it and then deliver the lines in that emotion.

That question you answered at the end is golden, too. From a person who is interested in playing a villain type character on one of my KZfaq channels, this gives me a new perspective to consider!

1:31 micro expressions vocal intonation and body language these have all been define by scientists such as Paul eckman and John gottman I would recommend you read thier books on emotions. You pretend that this is a science yet you speak in general statements this is all been defined by science and would recommend that you define your recommendations in such a frame of communication to your students. I hope this information helps you and your students :-)
