The must have tools for any gamedev on a budget, each offering professional quality output for FREE! Every tool I describe here will handle a different part of gamedev including game engines, game art, audio and video recording software.
I have personally used the majority of these tools, or am planning to use them based on the high recommendations of others, so be sure to check them out as they may help you save money when making your dream indie game!
Every one of the free tools here show that the barrier to entry for gamedev is lower than ever, you can have a go completely for free - so why not try it this new year!
Links to all tools can be found below :)
Also thanks to chadderbox for letting me use some footage from his game - be sure to check his channel out! / chadderbox

"People come to play for the aesthetic, and they'll stay for the gameplay" I like that phrase!! PS. Hey, I'm learning DaVinci as we speak!! What a coincidence that you brought that up!! 😁

Nice compilation! The only one that may be missing, is Krita, for idk, VN or games that rely on illustrations, but it's pretty spot on.

Definitely gonna pick up a few of these, i'm looking into getting into game development and documenting it! so this is really helpful! Found this video through reddit reccomendations! also another good tool for sound effects for me is beepbox, ive made a ton of little music with it, but its a little different than what you shown that seems more similar to something like fl studio. but the video was great thanks you!

Godot's Visual scripting is extremely good for people who do not know programming. I made two prototypes that works with minimal searching or learning.

Great set of tools here! I used LMMS a little while ago because of your previous video. I'm tempted to try out davinci resolve since my current video editor (lightworks) doesn't render the highest quality unless you have the paid version, but it's hard to make the switch since I have years of experience with it.
@Madbook

Awesome, I saw you giving LMMS a go in a devlog a few weeks ago I think :D I really highly recommend Davinci Resolve - I know that feeling of sticking with the devil you know, so fair enough for not switching yet!

i would not agree on the unity and godot thing, I tried unity and after 1 week I just gave up cause I couldn't figure anything out but when I tried godot it instantly clicked for me and as if I already knew gd script (i didn't) so I would say godot is easier cause their language is similar to python and not as difficult as c++ or c# that unity uses.

@Madbook What you recommend for version control?
@Madbook

I would highly recommend using git, not only is it free, open-source and amazing at what it does, it is used by the majority of the wider programming community so it's a very valuable skill to learn! I personally use GitHub to host my repositories online - I find it to be ideal for personal use and it means my projects are backed up and not just on my PC! GitHub also has a decent desktop application called "GitHub Desktop", that lets you manage the basic functions of git in a simple and more user-friendly way. For any complex commands you need to use occasionally, you can then just open up the command line like normal and use git commands from there.

@@Madbook I use git for code, but how does it deal with many binary files over time? I doing a full 3D Vulkanengine with a toolchain to really learn Vulkan and master engine programming. (Vulkan only, Linux only, for the sake of my sanity) Git is pretty amazing these days. How's LFS support in practice? I'm currently storing many version of test assets to stress test exporters. Found bugs already because of it.

I have had issues with git and large files when I haven't used the git-lfs extension. Git is great for code, but you need the extension if you want to store large files. From personal experience, the git-lfs extension is pretty robust and shouldn't cause any issues. I believe it stores the large files as a pointer file, and then stores the actual file contents on a separate server. It's always worked great for me.

@@Madbook Thanks for sharing your experience! Looks like Git + LFS is the way to go, at least for now.

I would like to add Unreal Engine. You cannot ignore the best open source game engine. Unity is great, probably a 95/100, but Unreal Engine is like 99/100. The only two things that Unreal Engine is lacking is support for an easier language than c++ and a good c++ documentation

Here's a bonus one! Andrew Zi Zhen showed me the awesome 'ScreenToGif' tool the other day - ideal for quickly and easily capturing clips for both reddit and twitter! www.screentogif.com/ 🌵🌵🌵 I've also been informed that you can also get Aseprite for free - if you compile it yourself! (But getting the paid version is convenient and supports the developers!)
