My wonderful and large sewing machine is away for cleaning and servicing. As I cannot stay away from quilting for too long I decided to get out my very small machine and give it a go. I learned quilting on a similar sewing machine but in the last years I got used to the space offered by my Janomes. It is a significant difference. My every day machine has a throat of 10 inches, where this one only 4 inches large. The change in available space for movement required some adjustment but in the end I got it. This video shows you that you can try free motion quilting on the equipment available at home and you do not need an extra equipment to learn the basics.

Hi there! Thank you for this awsome feedback! I am more like I will quilt no matter what 🤣😂. I also do hand quilting. And it is not tat difficult, with a smaller sandwich a an extension table is perfectly doable. ❤❤❤

Quilting.. especially free motion is like crack. Try it once and you're addicted for life. It's so relaxing. The sound of the machine, the rhythm of your hands. The patterns and designs are endless. You are an inspiration.

Yup, fabrics and quilting. Yarn can get me on ocassion, but pretty colors of textiles... I am addicted. My good friend, who is also a fabric store owner knows that too well. Sometimes, she stops me from buying too much....And only quilters and theri spouses can get that.

Replay, replay, replay! I love replaying your videos over and over. I learn so much from watching you. This was great to show you don’t need the big expensive machines even though they are awesome. Thank you again for your awesome gift of sharing your time and expertise. You are truly a blessing to many. Have a beautiful weekend ❤❤❤❤❤

Hi there again! Thank you for the feedback. As always you are getting me. small but good quality machine is a very powerful tool. You can learn to fmq with it so you knwo if you like it and if you want to invest in a larger machine. Larger machines are required for large quilts. But if you want to try or you like smaller projects, then they can be enough. Quilting is all about creativity and sometimes if we cannot express it in large projects we can stay creative on a smaller scale. It can be as impactfull. I needed many years to be able to afford a larger sewing machine. I fell in love with quilting on a small one ❤❤❤

There is no better way to perfect piecing than to piece 5” or smaller blocks - and I think the same applies to FMQ’ing in a small space. There is less room for error so you learn to maintain control of your stitches and design a bit more than in a huge space. This tutorial should certainly encourage smaller machine users to try this amazing craft!

I bouth the smaller machine as an emergency replacement. But I sew already many patchwork tops on it. It is small, quiet and very precise. My sewing space is tiny and I have space for one machine at a time. So for every day I need a machine that can do it all. ❤❤❤

Love this! I have several practice sandwiches that came out nicely, very similar to this one you're doing here, and I wanted to frame those, but new frames are ridiculously expensive so a thrift store frame might be the best option. I learned to piece on my first machine, a Brother CS-6000i that was a surprise gift given to me by some lovely folks on a forum moderating team of which I was a member so I could participate in a block swap-before that, I hand pieced everything. The throat was right at 5" and I did free motion on it, did one lap quilt and table runners. That sent me to buy a Brother PS1500 PQ 1500 straight stitch machine with a 9" throat, nice and fast, but hard to get the manual tension right. My current Janome, or rather, my former since it's sold already, which was serviced yesterday, has a 10" throat and the Janome 7700 had an 11" throat. The Juki HZL-G220 I plan to finish this quilt on (fits queen size mattress up to the pillow area) has an 8" throat. I have a quilt sandwich ready to practice on and I pulled out the unfinished quilt; it doesn't look as awful as I remember, LOL. It's not that far from being done so maybe I can knock it out in two good sessions, then attach the binding. If so I will show it on my channel. I've never been a quitter so she'll be done one way or another! My sense of order won't allow unfinished projects to just lay around forever. By the way, a hopping foot is definitely not my preferred foot, either! I have them, one came with the Juki and the Janome as well. They work, but the motion is distracting to me, impairs your vision, and you can't quilt as fast, as you noted. The nice free motion adjustable foot I bought for my Juki awhile back was well worth the $$! Hope your machine is back from her Spa Day soon! Take care! ~Cynthia

I also have problems with the motion and light reflexion from the hoping foot. But I found another one. A metal with a very wide opening and it will work better. I bought for a totally different machine years ago, but I could not get it to fit. Low vs high shank. Let me know when your quilts are done. I will take a look :). Now my machines: no-name cheap machine, then a bit better but small pfaff exchanged for a Pfaff quilt expression whixh was a waste of money (it had terrible probelms with tension). Then I hot my first Janome and two years ago I exchanged it for Janome M7. The little one from the video I got three, maybe four years back as a backup and so I can take it with me for quilt classes. For now I am done. No space for anything more or bigger. Have a great week and yey! you sold one of your machines.

Gosia, can you perhaps, if you want to, that is, address how you quilt a bed size quilt differently than a smaller project as far as density? I know that the beautiful, artistic quilting you do makes for a dense, stiffer piece, along with very low loft cotton batting, so do you make the quilting on a bed quilt less dense, bigger? Thanks in advance. ~Cynthia

Hi Cynthia, I made already one or two of such videos, but soon I will have a large quilt again. Now also the light is better. Usually I have a problem when quilting with neutral color thread. Give me some time for the right project! ❤❤❤@@rootsrocksfeathers1975

@@quiltingnerdI do recall seeing one quite some time ago, yes, so I will try to find it and check it out again. Yes, lighting for videos is such a challenge! And thread that blends makes it a bit more difficult to see. (I found one from a year ago that you did, thanks!)

Gosia have you tried taking pliers to the bar on your foot ? Just bend it up so it doesn't hop with your sewing bar. I've done this several times with feet.

I totally agreed, I still love to quilt and sew on my Singer 401a that my father bought me in 1957. This I went to from a singer 1908 treadle . Sometimes you just have to cut your own threads. Primrose mcvay

Dear Primrose, you Singer from 1957 is a machine that will still work in 50 years. I am sometimes scared how bad the quality of some products got. I love the efficiency of my large Janome. I can quilt larger quilts with more ease and larger patterns. The small machines can enable you to learn quilting and see if it is for you. Also, quilting is more than just large quilts. It is also smaller, beautiful objects where we can be simply creative for the pure joy of it ❤❤❤

Yes my old singer works beautifully, I do take care of her , singer got into trouble in 1970s, they have come back but my everyday machine is a Janome about 6 years old. And for bigger jobs a HQ Capri. And when I just want to piece happily it's my Featherweight. As you may have gathered I love sewing machines .Primrose

That is lovely. I have only a domestic and have mostly done straight line/walking foot geometric designs. My 2 completed FMQ quilts were far from perfect, but looked alright once they were washed and dried. The crinkly texture that comes after washing hid a lot of my errors. And I got the bug and want to learn more.

So it is too late for you now 🤣😂. This addiction gets worse. In my opinion it is the most beautiful hobby. I have so many modest women that would never admit they are artists, creating increadible patchwork and quilts on their small machines. So much creativity set free ❤❤❤

I have that same hopping foot. I don’t see how you know where you’re sewing. I also have the other two the one you use with rulers and an open toe one that’s lets you see better and a closed toe one the metal on those feet are thinner.
@quiltingnerd
@quiltingnerd 4 ай бұрын
I use the hopping foot only if I have to. I have one with open toe but it simply slows me down. With this machine I have no other option and as you noticed the quilting may be less precise because of the limited visibility. It also reflects the light so I can get dizzy. It is not ma favorite, for sure. ❤❤❤

Take a deep breath, an if possible some headphones with your favorite music. Find your own speed, and let you make mistakes. That helps. Quilt on something of less impact for you. It reduces the pressure that has to be perfect. I am using a 50 and 40wt tread. Mostly Aurifil, somethimes wonderfill. Some of the embroidery thread will also do the job. As long as the thred works with my machine it is fine. ❤❤❤

You certainly can't quilt a queen or king bed quilt on this small sewing machine which is why I had to buy a sewing machine with at least a 12 in throat space. Do you also quilt on a long arm?
@quiltingnerd
@quiltingnerd 4 ай бұрын
Hi there1 I do not have a long arm. I do not have the space and I am not a professional quilter to explain the expense. I have a Janome M7 and it has 12 inch throat or so. So I can quilt a king size quilt on it. I love it. But now, the machine is away and I am addicted so I took out my small one ❤❤❤
