I share tips as I'm learning to free-motion quilt on my domestic sewing machine. This video is Part 1 on how I machine quilt this swirl vine design in an open space as well as in a restricted space with boundaries. Next week, in Part II, I'll share 11 tips and show how I free motion quilt this design in a larger scale as an all-over free motion quilting design on a larger quilt. I sit down at my home sewing machine to quilt these designs free-hand. As I learn how to free motion quilt various designs, I will share my supplies, tools, tips, process, mistakes and give solutions for how I fix them and still end up with a beautiful free motion quilting project. I learn best from both tutorials as well as watching others free motion quilt so I will be creating a mix of observation and video tutorials.

I just came across your channel , it really like it this one. I don’t mind the talking as you are pointing out mistakes and how to manoeuvre out of them. I have been quilting a long time and always need a refresher. Thanks ❤ it all looks good to me.

I love how you show the errors that you made and you tell us how to correct them. And it’s so nice to see someone free motion quilting and tell you right out front it’s definitely different quilting on a whole quilt. There is always the struggle with the large quilt. You are fabulous and please keep up the good work.

Thank you so much! I’m glad you are finding the videos helpful. I feel like the information about FMQ on large projects is lacking. It’s easier to find people quilting on scraps, but it’s such a different experience. I think it’s easy to feel frustrated or disappointed that our work doesn’t look like we imagine on large quilts, but there’s so much to think about and lots to deal with. It takes time. In the meantime, I’m trying to learn to be kind to myself and patient. 😉 It’s fun to share as I learn. 💞 .

I just ran across this video & your channel. I have been taught that when a "space, or gap" is smaller than the design, just leave it. I think your quilting looks fantastic. I know it's easy to see "missteps" as we quilt, but honestly the overall design is beautiful. No one would ever see the swirls in a row or a couple going in the same direction as a mistake. Remember - we have to step back and see the overall design as a whole! Beautiful work - thank you for the lesson!!

I now know what I'll be using as an all over design on my first quilt. LOL. I've been thinking about it and couldn't figure out whether to quilt block by block or what, but I like the way this looks. My blocks in the center are rather plain. I like the fabrics so much i didn't want to chop them all up. But I'm making a big border of the braded look to make the quilt larger. I think this would be perfect for it. Thank you for the tutorial and tips. 😊

In the over all design, you swirls going in the same direction blend in. The camera angle is good for seeing the whole process, the overhead view helps see the formation of the design. Thank you for your openness.

Thank you. I agree. They really aren’t very noticeable, probably more to me bc I’m looking for them. 😉I need to invest in something that allows me to video from overhead. $$ or figure out a cheap alternative. I’ve been experimenting, but nothing I love yet. I’ll keep at it. I appreciate your feedback . 💞

@suchaprettyfabric

Liz Ryan I have the same issue, but I think if we are aware of it, it will keep us from doing a whole bunch in an area that are exactly the same. Also, a tip I need to mention again is that sometimes turning the fabric around in another direction completely can help with direction issues. I’ll play around with this some more and update with new videos as I learn. 💕

Its gorgeous! Thank you for these wonderful videos! I am getting geared up to quilt one of my own quilts for the very first time. I'm so nervous! But honestly, you've given me a lot of confidence. I've been drawing...... on hundreds of pages and I think I've got at least 3 designs down. Now for the actual practice on a practice quilt sandwich! So exciting!

Congratulations!! 🎉 I’m so happy for you! I’m glad you are finding value in my videos. If you keep telling yourself that you will improve over time and that everything you do is helping you learn (especially, the mistakes & problems), it helps with confidence if things aren’t going as imagined or hoped. Each time, the lessons build on each other. I ran into a few issues with a recent project that I’ll be sharing in a future video. I’m always learning & growing. Good luck!! 🍀💞🍀💞

First of all, while conceptually having a couple of swirls going in the same direction is not ideal, when finished the overall impression is spectacular. I love how curvy and how smooth your swirls are. While you struggle with feathers as your nemesis I’m doing OK with feathers ... but the swirls, they eat me alive. What kind of batting do you use. I love how puffy it is. Mine is pretty flat until it’s been washed. I just finished my second quilt top and sandwiched it yesterday and I’m going to start quilting today. It’s a toddler quilt, about 45 x 60. I am going to do an all over pattern of swirls and echoed paisleys. When it’s finished I’ll post it. I wait every week for one of your videos. They’re such an inspiration to me I can hardly wait till next week when you come up with your tips. Always so helpful. Stay safe and healthy with this monstrous pandemic stalking us at every corner.

I’m glad you are well. I agree with you, in the end the direction isn’t really noticeable. It’s also challenging to remember everything you are trying to do as you are quilting the design. I hope it becomes more natural with time. Swirls are actually my nemesis. I’m having luck with feathers. The thing about this swirl design, is that I find it more forgiving than a full swirl. I have some sense of progress and accomplishment with this swirl design vs the frustration I feel with full swirls. It sounds as though you understand the same pain. 😉 If you don’t mind, will you tag me on your posts! I’d love to celebrate right along with you and I find that I’m missing posts I really want to see. Good luck and thank you for the kind comment. 💞 Also, I’m using Hobbs poly down in this. It’s ok. It’s cheap at Hobby Lobby with a coupon, but I’m not completely sold on it yet. I’ll let you know. I need to use it in a quilt.

I was looking for something to do in a 3 inch border and liked the design, but this is too intimidating once i watched you quilt it. It would be helpful for us newbies if you took a few minutes on a dry erase board to demonstrate how to draw it rather than just quilting. This is something Angela Walters does (example- for feathers) and it has been a great teaching tool for artistically challenged folks like me. Love the design, hope to do it someday.
