Been thinking about trying this simply due to the cost of boat motors. I get it, but simply put they are outrageously expensive even units that are 47 years old. Not terribly concerned with max speed so long as its got the power to come back up stream against a current.

I tried a motor on my ABS plastic rowboat and found that I preferred the oars. I also tried a motor on my Sevylor inflatable fishing boat. By the time I had the motor mount, motor and battery in or on the boat there wasn't that much room for me. Again, I found that it was more enjoyable for me to use the oars. If people complained, I moved out of their way.

Another thought, put some weight in the bow to balance your boat out. You might get more speed that way, certainly make it easier to get your boat up on step. Too much weight in the stern makes the boat drag through the water! Be able to get more rpm from the motor to get the prop spinning faster - around 2,500 rpm's worth - put a tach on the engine if you worry about it blowing apart if you overspeed it.

I wonder if you could hook up a belt drive pulley to a big old 24 volt diesel starter, and power that pulley on top (on demand with a clutch) using a couple deep cycle marine batteries to power it. You could even pull the spark plugs while running, as I think those are generally 5-7hp. A real trick would be if you could recharge it while running gas, fun project I'd think but maybe not practical.

i recommend finding a dolephin its a fin that bolts to the cav plate above the prop an keep the boat more level an help at low speeds an high speeds for keeping the noes good an down where it should be, the pitch of the prop seems good because it lets you get to governed rpm, you know how high you can run one of those without blowing it up so unhooking the governer will give you more top end speed, an the law of speed in a boat is slight up pitch to level pitch an as light as you can stand it, but you want to keep the boat as level bow to stern as you can, until were doing 30 to 40 pitch adjustments of the motor angle wont really do anything at that point youll hve 3/4 of the boat out of the water is when youll need pitch adjustments, hope this helps.

These are great repurpose ideas, the logical problem with them is that the gear cases are meant to run at 8,000 rpm with a 2 stroke motor, and these motors run on average 3,600 rpm, so you never get the full speed out of them, unless you re prop them, but even then it will never have the performance as the original.
