Thanks for the message about our Free Deed poll template. A deed signed by an individual requires only one witness. There are templates and materials on the internet which suggest 2 witnesses are required and even that the witness needs to be a solicitor or Notary Public, be careful as often these materials and information are not entirely accurate and correct. Yes, you can. There's no obligation to change your passport straight away. However, it's recommended when you renew to use your new name, if you want that to be recognised as your legal name moving forward. Just make sure the name on the booking matches your passport name.

No people who live with you cannot sign it however if both people live wit eachother but not with you they can.

It you have signed the Deed Poll then the document will need to be shared with all of the government departments and various organisations you have relationships with so the records can be updated with your new name. So DVLA, the Passport Office, banks, utility companies etc.

The most common way to change your name is by deed poll, a legal document showing your new name which can be used as evidence of your new title. This will be required by most financial institutions and government offices. It uses a formal deed (form LOC020), for adults, signed by you and witnessed by two independent persons, then sent to The Royal Courts of Justice. This can be unenrolled or enrolled, with the only difference being an enrolled deed poll is recorded on The Gazette (using form LOC025), meaning that you are putting your new name on public record and is officially recognised by all government agencies. The total fee for changing your name by enrolled deed poll is £48.32. You can record a change of first name once and a change of surname up to three times, and five years must pass between successive changes in surname. Once you have reached the limit on recording name changes, you can still change your name however, you cannot record it officially. If you're changing your name for personal reasons, an unenrolled deed poll may be sufficient. This is simply a deed poll that has not been voluntarily registered (enrolled) with the Ministry of Justice. You can make your own deed poll for free using the correct legal wording. There are websites that will generate a document for free, which you will need to print off yourself onto nice heavy paper (ideally parchment paper). However, some organisations may not accept a deed poll you’ve made yourself, for example a bank. They might want to see an original certified (stamped) document to accept your change of name as proof of identity. In this case, it would be better to use 3rd party websites or a solicitor to make the deed poll for you, with a number of certified copies sent to your address. An alternative way to prove your change of name is to use what’s called a statutory declaration. This is simply a standard written statement that is signed in the presence of a solicitor, notary public, barrister, licensed conveyancer, chartered legal executive, any other qualified person authorised by law to administer an oath. Now there’s quite a few companies out there which suggest or imply the document needs to be stamped or it needs some professional to sign and stamp the Deed Poll. Actually that isn’t always the case. In fact, in the large majority of occasions, a professional signature and stamp aren’t necessary for the document to be legally binding within the UK. It just needs to have independent witnesses and the independent witness doesn’t need to be a professional like a solicitor or a qualified Notary Public.
