I'm a volunteer at www.laguineapigrescue.com/ and lots of people ask about Guinea Pig floor time and they also ask about guinea pig cages. Every once in a while someone will come in and tell me that their Guinea pigs are free range! They say that they're Guinea pigs don't live in a cage and they are free to roam around. Here's 5 reasons why I think it is very important that Guinea pigs have a cage. Free Guinea Pig Care Guide: www.scottysanimals.com/

I love the background music! My piggies enjoy floor time a lot! They prefer it in a smaller room, they do tend to hide behind the couch and table if I let them out in the living room. But I do think they need floor time because my piggies love to explore and check everything out! I prefer my cage on the floor because my piggies are reallllyyy hard to catch so I just leave the door open and wait until they go back inside themselves 😂

I think they want their cages and i agree with what you said about a house full of loose rodents is an infestation xD but my girls like their cage doors open all the time pretty much, they run around when they feel like it (and really only two of the six even like to come out on their own). They hardly make a mess on the bedroom floor because they prefer to pee on fleece areas we put down and their cages. It is the all time best thing ever when a piggie comes and licks my toes out of nowhere :3 but i also agree only some pigs/homes are smart and safe enough to be like that. Love you scotty and billy!

My pigs live mostly outside in a playpen/hutch but I bring them inside when it’s hot/cold or raining. Inside I sort of ‘free roam’ them. They have an area set up with towels, hidies and all of their food, hay etc. They can come and go when they want but they mostly stay inside their room anyway. They only poo and pee in their space and mostly just come out if they’re hungry and asking for food. They stay in the area they feel safe in and they are used to their set up. They are perfectly fine without a cage

Just wanted to say Hi to you Scotty from the UK. Absolutely love all of your videos - as they are so very informative. You do a great job. I started off with pibgies over 50 years ago and ended up with a herd of 17. I was given an incorrectly sexed partner for my girl.....whoops! Thankfully there is the internet and Google now, so it's much easier to find information on the best things to buy, use and how to keep piggies. Anyway, I'm an elderly lady now and about 2 months ago I contacted my local charity rescue - Bobtails, finding a mum and her two daughters that needed a home - so off I went and here I am now with three adopted piggies. Whilst thinking about adopting these three, I did my research and came across your site, which also referenced Saskia. So between the two of you and your videos - you are both absolutely amazing and born naturals dealing with piggies. Thank you for being such an inspiration for me. All my best wishes to you both. Stay safe and take care Jay 🌻🌻😃

Hello 😊. My 3 rescue piggies(they have all passed😥) they were free roam but had a huge cage too. They slept at night in the cage, also ate in it. You MUST cage them when friends come over, people can stand on them. I had a litter tray they used and their cage, they loved being out all day but they loved bed in the cage at night. I had guinea proofed the room. Very hard work though... my rex was like a wee dog, he ran to the door when he heard my sister , he was a fantastic piggy, my vet and the assistants said the world stopped when he was put to sleep, he was SO amazing. I will never get over him. Scotty your are a wonderful human ❤ . From Scotland

At the end of the day or if I wasn't home he would stay in his cage of course..He was a special piggy

My piggies have a 36" x 24" cage that they reside in around two days a week. The other five days I have them in a secure, blocked off floor area, approximately 10' x 4'. I tape sheets of plastic to the carpet, then cover the plastic with fleece, old soft towels and paper bedding. I have a tunnel and two boxes where they can hide, play and sleep. I tidy up this area at least two times a day, once in the morning and once at night. At the end of the week, I put them back in their regular cage and shake out the piggie hair, hay etc. and wash the fleece and old bath towels. I clean the plastic or replace it. Then I start fresh. The boys Teddy and Zen-Zen absolutely love their larger floor space. I know they feel safe and secure. (Thanks, Scott!)

My boys they have a C&C cage and also a warm and soft terrace, like a play ground for them which I made for them, but the cage is open 24/7. They can play and run out of the cage, but also they have their own place, where they can hide themselves when they feel like to be hidden or to secure, to have a great nap etc... We trust them, we know that they don´t bite anything, also all dangerous parts of the room are covered, also they go to a toilet in the cage. That´s so great, that they can be free and safety :)

I used to house my guinea pigs in a small pet store cage with an open door 24/7. They would be fed in the cage exclusively, but where welcome to explore my bedroom at all times. The entire room was made piggy-proof, so safety was not an issue. Though they had their own cage, their favourite hang out place was under my bed, so I just put blankets there for easy clean up. The piggies and I loved this set-up and for my next piggies I will definetly do this way again.

They need to have all of their general requirements such as food, water, hay, bedding, and shelter all in the one place. Being able to urinate and poop in the one area will make your job looking after them so much easier too. And most guinea pigs are happy enough to have a maximum of 15 minutes of floor time per day.

Our piggies love floor time, but I do it either outside in a covered coop when the weather is cool enough, or in the animal room where they can run around under cover of the tables their habitat is built on while I clean their habitat. Once a week, when I take the whole room apart to clean the floor and walls, if they can't go outside, I make a big pen with extra grids and fleece on the floor in another room. We used to let them run free in the living room, but like you said, they just sat under the sofa most of the time, despite the toys, foods, and hides we had out for them. Except for our blind/deaf girl who loves to adventure all over.

I keep mine in a cage with an open door. If we leave the room or go to bed, we just shut the gate. I find that my piggies are not too adventurous and generally keep to the area right outside their cage. I put down some bath mats right outside their cage so I can just shake them out at the end of the day. They enjoy being able to come out of their cage though, they get the zoomies and popcorn a lot while they are exploring! And they chew at the gate to be let out if the gate is closed. They also come when called, so if they do go too far, I just call them back. :)

We like to give our three piggies free supervised outside time, with the choice of being in the hutch. Most of the time, they will pick houses to run into at first (we set houses up around where they are), but then they like to either run into the bushes and graze as a herd, or go into the shaded area of grass and graze. It does not seem like they are scared at all, and when we have to bring them inside after it either gets too hot or too dark, they do NOT want to go back! They also lay down a LOT outside, whether it be chewing on some food we gave them in the hutch, or just eating grass and basking in the sun. They don't really get dirty, besides the occasional fight in a particularly dirty area, but the dirt here is easy to brush out. We don't really have many birds of prey or cats in our area, but as I said earlier, they are always under supervision and 1-3 humans is a pretty good repellent to any potential predators. Even if they wanted, our piggies are always in our line of sight.

My piggies free roam in my closet. It's huge (~62.27 ft²) they only have access to the closet and my room is off limits to my dog and cat. Everything in the room is for them. I have a small section blocked off which is used for storage. I also have some play pen panel things blocking all of the walls to stop them from chewing on the wall paper. Everything is piggies proof, I put fleece of the floor and they have litter boxes. It works great for me and my 5 girls love it.

Free-range piggies are always best if they have a cage they can run to. But also you can have "free-range" piggies who are still bound give them a whole room and have that room piggie proofed. My 2 herds live in my office one in a 3x6 cage one in a 3x3 cage but both cages open into the rest of the room which has been lined with grates to keep their little piggies teeth from my wires or other nonedible items. (group 1 has 4 piggies group 2 has 3 piggies 2 of which are babies)

I don't use a cage for my two piggies, and it has worked well for the last 2 years for us. I have a tiled area of the house, which is completely safe from anything that might harm them, including wires, things to chew, or anything else. I close off that area, so they can't get around the rest of the house. In this area, they have hiddies, fleece blankets and vet bedding, and they look VERY comfortable and relaxed. They also have plenty of hay of course! They usually poop and pee inside their hiddies, and not in the rest of the space, but I clean up and disinfect the areas every day, and spot clean whenever and wherever needed. People that have come to visit me, have been surprised, that there is no smell, and that things look as clean as they do. I also let them out of this enclosed area once or more times per day, under close supervision for a short while, but it doesn't take long before they have had enough, and go back to where they usually live all by themselves. I would prefer a CC cage, but it's difficult to put one in that space, and I don't have any other rooms I can use.

C&C cubes were sold out, so I used my left over chinchilla wire to make a 5ftx3ft cage that was 11.5 inch high. One of my pigs just jump/climbs out at will. She mostly lives to chill in her cage. But if she hears me cooking or sometimes just randomly she will scramble out and come demand fresh veg. The cutest/scariest time was when she snuck up on me (no weeking) while I was at my computer at night. She ran over my feet which made me yell and jump out of my skin. She was unimpressed by my theatrics and settled down on my feet for a snooze. (At night I usually sit with a blanket around my legs cuz I get cold so she found the best hidey spot). for my sanity I had to start locking the pigs into a smaller cage at night while we're sleeping.

They are not good in confined spaces together but live peacefully with their own space. They have cage access all day if they want to get back in but usually I am not aloud to sleep in....they start pinging on the cage bars if I am late. They have fleece under the sofas and are really good at only popping on these. They jump back in at night when I change the hay. My living room and kitchen are fully guinea pig proof....I do have a few teeth marks in the wooden furniture legs though 😂

They poop as they eat so I just change it every 2 days. They get fresh hay every night and they follow it In to the cage so I can close them in at night without any hassle. They only really get anything on the floor when they play fight in the middle of it 😬😂 when the little one max is hungry he shoves the bigger one Ted all the way over to me to wheek at me for food. They are so funny together.

very good video, i do give me floor time, and they seem more active and happy, but all your reasons seem to resonate true, the thing they seem to like the best is a loft/second level with a low angle ramp in the cage,i am gonna get two cages on dinning tables and give them more space, more things to hide and play in,its a fair bit more work cleaning the floor and around furniture than cleaning the cage and keeping it clean..but they seem to really love the space, love my piggies want the very best for them.

My 2 boys can go outside the cage whenever I'm home to watch them. The room is guinea pig save (no cables, carpet or furniture they can get behind) and there are a lot of houses and tunnles on the floor and the doors are barricaded with wood planks so I can get in the room but the piggies can't get out. Whenever they get spooked they can run back inside their cage or hide unter a house / tunnle outsite. Because they live in the hallway the brave one often follows me to the kitchen door to beg for food. Often they are in the cage and rest/sleep but when they are active the do enjoy running around outside :)

My piggies live free range in the garden. They still have a heated house but have the whole garden to run around in. I think they're the happiest piggies ever. They have freedom but still have the comfort of their warm, safe bed. Skunk is about 5 and is so healthy. He's never eaten anything poisonous or ran away. Rocket is a bit younger and started off his life living on his own until I rescued him. He popcorns around the garden. Happy piggies. Yes there is risk that they will get eaten by a buzzard but I think it's worth the risk.

My guinea pigs have a cage/area where they live that is pretty big (5m²) but they still are allowed to free range in the apartment 24/7. I've found that's the best solution for them and me :)

Personally I put a play pen around my bed so they could learn the area and then when they felt comfortable I removed the play pen and now they love free roaming! I have a fairly small room so they can't get lost, and I have FULLY Guinea Pig proofed my room. I feel like free roaming is perfectly fine as long as you take all of the precautions and your Piggies are happy! (I do NOT free roam then 24/7, only when I am with them!)

My girls love the cage so much, that i have to be careful when putting them down.. otherwise they WILL jump. I even had a guinea pig jump to the cage... and fall down on the floor, cause she misjudged the distance (Same thing happened a while later on the doorstep). Energetic little lady she was... Nothing serious happened in either case. We both got a nasty shock (The first one i recall her wheeking loudly at), and she had a small scratch across the upper lips which healed in a few days. I sadly lost her a few years ago. 6 Years old and then got Cancer... Oldest Guinea Pig ive ever had (in th 13 years me, or my family, have had them), and she was always so friendly. Never violent. A true pacifist.

I have kept free range piggies for some time now. They need a quiet, sheltered space where they feel safe and secure so mine have a wooden house under a small table. Also it depends what other pets you have or if you have a busy household, their safety is priority. Totally agree Scotty, they need to feel secure otherwise its unkind because they will feel under threat. I have a very quiet house and am home most of the time. So it works for me.

My six girls are semi free range piggies. They have their own area with fleece and food and sleeping places but they have a door so they can run in the dinning room when ever the want. It has a Lino floor so can be cleaned and all cords are up high. They go out there often but always come back to their own area to sleep.

I think it depends on the way people live. I listened to a lady that let her girls piggies roam free in a secured room, with a cage open to their disposition when they need it. The most important thing is for them to be well taken cared of, safe and happy, the rest is up to the owner :)

I absolutely agree with every point you made! My girls are in a piggy pen on the floor. When I clean, I open up the front fence and they run out to wait. They know I'm done when I put their hideys back in, so they run in and wait for me to hang their tent. Even if I leave the fence open so they can come out for exercise, they stay in their pen. That's their space where they can walk around freely and safely without fear.

I would never let mine roam free range. I take them out everyday for playtime, but free range just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Glad you mentioned about them chewing cords too. I never thought about cords when I built my cage a lot bigger, and they chewed it. It never crossed my mind since the cord was outside the cage that they would get to nit and chew on it. Just lucky they didn't electrocute themselves.

We had a scare a couple weeks ago when one of our girls escaped (still dont know how!). Thankfully she was hiding under a cabinet safe & sound. When I realized she wasn't in her cage all I could imagine was the worst. And honestly, I think if she could talk, she would tell us she was frightened.

That is scary! 2 of my girls escaped on me one day 🤦🏼‍♀️ they hopped right out the barrier I had up for them to have floor time in my pet room. I was walking to my utility room and saw 2 piggies go walking past my bedroom door 😳 I got them back in their pen and they were so happy and just hid for the next bit!

Our fur babies have a habitat in their own room (up on a table). They love it when we give them some supervised time to roam the floor. Hilarious to watch them run around..back and forth back and forth..poppin' away until they wear themselves out and they plop down to rest. We attempted once to give them free range around the rest of the house but yeah..total waste of time..they aren't having any of that! 😜

I absolutely agree with you Scotty. Piggies love their cage and as far as it's wide enough, that's the place they prefer. It's their home and they like it as much as we like ours. They don't like wide open spaces cause they don't feel secure. And the best for them is a c and c cage on a table to interact with them and by the way it's good for our poor human backs and knees. The best way to keep them and make them happy. OLD FRENCH LADY.

Hi Scotty & Billy! I totally agree on what you said about letting your piggies “free range.” I have a separate play pen with Chloroplasts that I had set up in my living room with odor control doggy pads underneath the fleece blanket. My fur babies love it. Their floor time is always supervised. Would timing them be the ideal way for their “play time?” Btw, I loooove your tunnel that is running along side your bachelor pad. Did I miss any videos on how you did your tunnel? If not I am interested to know how you did it. Mahalo Nui Loa

My guinea pigs were free roaming for a few months, sadly it wasn’t my choice. They decided that the cage wasn’t for them. I couldn’t keep them from jumping out of their Midwest. I tried doubling the size of the cage and that wasn’t good enough. I gave up and just left their cage door open until I bought a lid. Now I don’t need a lid and only have to deal with escapes every 6 months.

I also think about it this way too: if you have an emergency like a fire and you need to get them out super quick, if they're free roam and you can't find them that would be a horrible situation!!!!!

But my piggy merlin, he loves floor time. He does sometimes get s little scared but most of the time he just loves to run, go through tunnels, chase my dog.. yeah I don't let merlin around my dog, my dog is very sweet but merlin chases him around. This is a very informative video

Hi I have two females. They just became full grown. They have two large cages (I always keep them in the cages together); one close to the ground and one that's more bunny cage like that's up higher. I recently dedicated an entire room of my home to them. I keep the room immaculately clean. I made sure they have piggy safe hiding places everywhere and hay/toys all over the room. I call it their dayroom because I only let them roam there during the day. They seem really happy. Is what I'm doing acceptable?

Hey, I am thinking about getting a guinea pig. However I am uncertain of what type of cage I should get. I was thinking about an open top one since most of what I'm seeing on youtube seem to be big and spacious enough as oppose to the closed top cages. My question is do they climb out of their cages (open cages)? Would you recommend for me to get a close cage until we both get acquainted to each other?

Scotty! Have a question for you. I’m getting two girl guineas in a couple of months. They haven’t been born yet☺️ So I am getting ready to order their cage. I am planning on a 2x4 from guineapigcages, along with a bistro. Will that be big enough? I am considering the 2x5, but it would really crunch me for space. 😬

My piggies love floor time. They run and jump so fast that even in a big cage, it's not possible. But 1h is enough, after that they just want to find a place to hide. Idk if it's bc they're 5-6 months old, so they have too much energy..?

My piggies love free roaming. When I’m home, I open the door to their cage. They are “cage trained”, meaning they’ll come back to their cage to pee or poo. I have to close a couple doors and I’m watching them the whole time. Is this ok? I never force them to come out, but they usually want to play and run around for a few minutes.

ok so can someone tell me if my living situation is good or bad for my piggy so I have two piggies they dont get along due to the older being aggressive to other piggies (considering getting a friend for my younger) so my younger guinea pig is free roamed in my room no cage at all and it is safe and everything she has no acess to cords or anything and shes been like this for a while now and its doing pretty good when I first got her I built her a cardboard big cage but she could jump it so I made it taller and she still could she was very stressed in a cage and everything so thats how she ended up free roamed she has a big litter box (shes potty trained) and a little area for all her needs like her food and water and litter box full of hay shes very happy does zoomies alot and is friendly she makes anything in my room a hideout and sleep area like under my bed and I even put little hideouts around my room for her im with her 24/7 since I dont leave my room alot and I do online school my other piggy have a cage she has a huge playpen for a cage that takes so much room shes really happy in it I can even lay and sit in there with her and she would still have so much room the play pen is connected to my huge closet and its where her litter box is and her food and water and she has hideouts in there too I make sure to give her tons of attention in there and overall she is happy I really like my living situation and theres too but I would like a few suggestions? so far they are really happy especially my younger one.
