Free Tools! The craziest garage sale ever?

I went to a garage sale where everything was free. The owner had inherited a house from his uncle and wanted everything out of the sheds so he could knock them down as part of clearing the area so he could rent it out. I got a massive haul of tools all for free.
I’ve only shown about half to two thirds of what I picked up to try and save time. I also got reamers, drill bits, jars of blind rivets in copper and aluminium, sand paper, punches, cold chisels, wad punches, pin punches and much more.

Great haul. In my town we have a "Swap Shed" at the Transfer Station(town dump). I have picked up many tools there including a 12" x 48" wood lathe, A 10" radial arm saw, and many other tools and tool boxes. What happens is that as the old timers die, their children and grandchildren have no interest in doing things with their hands. Its all just junk to them. The men that work at the transfer station direct people to put tools in the shed. I've rescued other tools as people were getting ready to throw them into the scrap steel bin. Good Video. Good Luck, Rick

These are found on UK based Telephone systems. The course open cut file you show is a Dreadnought File or Milleni Cut file they can be used on wood but generally used for Aluminium as it does not clog up

I've seen this happen before. You just about cry when you find out what has been trashed. My late friend was German and had worked for the Norton motorcycle race department. His son inherited the house and sent then his entire workshop to the scrap yard. Loss of the tools and equipment was bad enough, but things like Norton and Matchless close ratio racing gearboxes went to the skip. So, there is something worse than having your tools and machines sold off to someone who can make use of them.

Hey Stuart, good to see you again mate . I hope you accept this with all respect intended…but, you tinny bastard!! What a score!!! Your eyes must’ve been like dinner plates..or those copper discs haha, when you saw what was there. I had bit of a woo hoo moment when you showed the Rega oil can. I’ve just resto’d one, the exact same!! It’s 98% completed. Just need to fit a new O ring. The original one is buggered, I think it’s a leather or a stiff cork type gasket. I’ve been keeping an eye out on MP for an old weightlifting belt….I saw someone restore an Estwing hammer handle once 😁 and the weight belt is a great idea ( although the size of the O ring suggests it’s a bit of overkill lol). Anyway Stuart, keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing how some of that stuff gets utilised in your future works. Cheers, Ian.

Of course it gets used but they’ll have to pull that one out of my cold, dead hands before I’ll ever part with it. Any way I can see your restored Rega? Hi Mark, yes it is sad but that’s life these days. Hopefully I’ve made enough preparations for when my family has to do the same thing. Actually once the operation was done the recovery was reasonably quick and easy. I had a wrist brace to hold everything together while it healed and went in for therapy treatment once a week, I think, just to help with scarring and and stopping the scared area adhering to the bones. Surprisingly it’s not as dramatic as I thought it would be. I can still do most things like drive, tie my shoes ect but it’s little things I’m still discovering that are difficult/ frustrating eg dealing cards, putting a key in the front door, reaching into tight spots or using my hands in a confined area. If it had been my left, non primary, wrist it would be less of a problem. My memory of the operation is a little vague as I was recovering from surgery to my left shoulder at almost the same time, the rotator cuff was torn off the bone, and recovery from that, although it went perfectly is a lot more complicated and painful than the wrist. I was still recovering from the more major injuries from the car accident as well so I wasn’t a happy camper. The good news is my wife and I both survived, obviously, but the two drugo’s that hit us head on both died. My wrist and shoulder are both pain free now so those surgeries had their desired outcome and I can still tinker to my heart’s content. Good luck with your operation, I’d like to hear how you get on. Cheers from someone that is grateful for everyday no matter the weather😂

Thanks Stuart for the reply as my wrist has been stuffed for 2 years most of my tools have just gathered dust , I am a woodworker a heart but have to say like all shops wood or metal. I worked in a lathe shop for over 15 years making bearings for the timken bearings company. It a shame that a lot off the old hand tool are not getting made any more as most engineering shops are all c n c. More about computer skills and programming than using your hand , That so the younger ones won’t wear out there body like us . I will let you know how it goes with the operation. Thanks Mark.
