As a kid I did not register (or at least recall) that so much of this film was shot in Portland. Love these "then and now" clips!

Being both a child of the 90's and a Portland native, this was fun to watch. Many of these locations are actually within walking distance from my place.

Growing up on the Oregon Coast (Newport, OR) we had Keiko at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I worked at a restaurant in the 90s that had Keiko Root Beer. The hype was huge. I live in Portland now and go to Astoria a lot, it was fun to watch this video of places I pass by almost daily. Amazing job with the camera re-capturing the scenes in the movie. I love then and nows. You've got a new sub.

Amazing to see just how much some of Portland has changed in 32 years! You line the camera angles up beautifully. Also, crazy to think that Michael Madsen was in both Free Willy and also Reservoir Dogs in the same year :D

Now I have even more of a reason to visit the Pacific Northwest in the US. I’m Canadian so British Columbia has a huge piece of my heart but I love Washington and Oregon. So beautiful! 😍 Oh, and Free Willy is still one of my favourite all time movies.

My 'work' on Free Willie. In an attempt to get the right shot for the leaping whale for animation, the animators created a mock up. Some guy stood on a jetty in Southern Cal and they took a few stills. They came into my edit bay with the stills and a rubber toy shark. Using the ADO, I was able to simulate the size and potion of the jumping whale for them so they could ask the Oregon film crew to shoot the shot for compositing.

At the Hammond/ Warrenton Oregon Marina theres an official sign saying it is a Free Willy filming location. It's about a 5 to 10 minutes drive from downtown Astoria. Been a while since ive seen the movie. Awesome video!

I live a block away from the scene with the car wash towards the end. Friends and I watched them film. And my friend’s kid helped himself to the candy and snacks from Craft Service. The car wash and I are still there. 🙂

I loved Free Willy as a kid...I watched it over and over. It's definitely where my love of killer whales began. Anything to do with whales even to this day, I think of this movie. Now mind you, I have my daughter now, she grew up on Dolphin Tale. I've tried to get her to like Free Willy but she's not having it....because "whales kill Dolphins" lol
