Giant Hubs Episode 2: The Port of Rotterdam: Europe's biggest port and gateway to the world.
The Port of Rotterdam is among the largest logistics centers in the world. With a handling capacity of about one million three hundred thousand tons - per day!
Punctuality is the definitive factor for success at Europe's largest port. More than 180,000 people work in the port area and help to keep this logistical masterpiece safe - and operating on time. From maritime pilots and terminal operators to coast guards. Everyone follows a carefully synced and always tight schedule.
Every year, more than 130,000 ships call at Europe's largest seaport. Container ships, inland ships and cruise ships. A total of 350 a day.
With 140 million tons of container goods entering the port each year, "unwanted" cargo also gets through. Europol estimates that half of all cocaine circulating in Europe is smuggled through Rotterdam. Suspicious containers are a case for customs. 650 officers are on duty in the Port of Rotterdam every day.
The biggest port in Europe is also one of the most innovative in the world. The operator ECT opened the world's first automated terminal here all the way back in 1993. The 100 automated vehicles are the secret of this terminal's success. They were invented in Rotterdam, and are now gaining ground at more and more ports around the world. They save on personnel costs - and time.
The Universe of the port of Rotterdam: A giant hub, bigger than the island of Manhattan. Get an exclusive look behind the curtain and learn what it takes to keep it running on time.

@@majorpygge-phartt2643 yeah since then the maasvlakte 2 has been made, atleast some of it, there still have to be some terminals afded for containers, but more impressive is that they are going to try and make it all automated, making the port of rotterdam not the biggest, but alot more efficient. Only the crane operators and the truck loaders have to be replaced ik pretty sure

The American version of these documentaries (they're made for different markets around the world) seem not only to be written for 13-year-olds but written by 13-year-olds. All the translations are wrong and they use terms like catastrophic, terrible, immense, etc., every time they can, even if what's been shown has none of those characteristics. Way to emphasize American stereotypes.

@@luxembourger Very true, as is this is true for every country I know in the world. Its a mechanism I think. Most people tend to be nationalistic in a way, see the world from their own country perspective. It helps if you travel a lot or if you live in other countries. You will even look at your own country with a different perspective is my experience. In Holland we complain that Americans don't now much about Europe, but when you turn around the question and ask yourselves what do we now about the US ( Or Asia, or Latin America) then we know also very little, myself included. Funny is that most people don't look into the mirror. How much Europeans now all the US states and their capitals ? We should not judge others if we don't judge ourselves first.

But in third world countries, just the corruption levels hold them back. That, nepotism and a willingness to treat their populations like slave workers. It’s not a lack of talent and plenty are intelligent enough. You just can’t get this level of efficiency when you have 85% corruption and an exhausted, underpaid workforce. But not just third world countries, also other countries in Europe and Amarica. Some countries have their priority different. (like "we" have almost no army but do have technology that the whole world uses) it's all aboit priorities. A other good example is that we are really direct and say what we think. In other countries is being nice and polite is worth more then being honest. We say what we thing whether you like it or not😅 sometimes even look rude to others. Europe's Biggest Port: The Port of Rotterdam | Giant Hubs | Episode... and World's Most Dangerous Flights | Pilot Error | Free Documentary I was able to watch the one about Rotterdam - just liked I've watched several other videos that you've put out. All of them have been excellent videos. So, some time ago, I subscribed - so I wouldn't miss any of your future videos. I've just clicked on to the second video, about Dangerous Flights, and got a blank screen with a message saying it's not to be viewed in my country. So, what's going on ? I'm in the UK. You say FREE documentary etc, and I agree with your sentiments. But are you now trying to censor what I can watch ? I'm an adult, aged 76, in a wheelchair. Do you think I'm going to become somehow dangerous to society if I watch the video ? I would really appreciate you sending me a new notification email so I can watch the video

Dear sir or madam, I do not work for discovery at all but I may give you an explanation of why certain videos can't be watched in certain areas. It has to do with certain rights to the material which are given per geographical area or country. One of the television channels may still have the rights to this episode by contract, and thus they can not share it for free on youtube in your area. Have a nice day!

Realised that Rotterdam's port is ~18% the size of (1:48) and about as long (2:06) as the country of Singapore, which handles even more maritime cargo

Singapore doesn't need to distribute all over the continent. No dry materials just a container harbor that's real easy to manage. And of course the harber works well it's a Dutch design.

I'm disappointed, my question remain unanswered : What's the size of the port in football fields units ?
@JonasJGB
@JonasJGB 4 жыл бұрын
Yayaya123, if I did my maths correct. The port should be about 23,668 football fields. (1 football field = 1.32 acres (American football field! No soccer field!). 12,643 Hectares = 31,241.533 acres. 31,241.533/1.32 = 23,667.828.) (NOTE: these are American decimal points! (US), = (EU). & (US). = (EU), )

OMG! Look at these handsome, masculine, hard-workers Dutch men! They're incredible! So much testosterone in this port! They're so professional, accurate, responsible, and passionate. I'd marry them all!

Cool documentary - thanks a lot. BTW: If you want to bring in problematic cargo into Europe - no problem - just use Italian ports, they are more flexible over there :-((
