Extreme Constructions: The Paris Metro | Engineering Documentary
Extreme Constructions: The Suez Canal: • Extreme Constructions:...
More than a century old, Paris’ metro is the beating heart of the city. With its 220 km of rail, 302 stations and 13 lines, the metro transports more than five million people every day. Invented by Fulgence Bienvenüe, the Parisian Metro tested many construction methods: wooden tunnels, boring machines, shields, ground freezing systems, steel viaducts and submerged chambers in the Seine. Today, the Parisian metro exceeds the capitals boundaries and connects itself with the new 200km-wide network of Grand Paris Express.

May I say, off the bat - the Paris Metro is awesome. I’ve spent many hours down there. And there’s also a super cool French movie with the Metro as a backdrop. Directed by Luc Besson, it’s called SUBWAY. Worth a watch! More than a century old, Paris' metro is the beating heart of the city. With its 220 km of rail, 302 stations, and 13 lines, the metro transports more than five million people every day. Invented by Fulgence Bienvenüe, the Parisian Metro tested many construction methods: wooden tunnels, boring machines, shields, ground freezing systems, steel viaducts and submerged chambers in the Seine. As a train enthusiast, I really do admire the development of the Paris metro over the years as the growth and popularity of the system expands over-time. I also never realised this metro system was the first to have rubber tyre-trains which I also like! This was worth watching this documentary for certain

I love trains! Ever since I was a very young lad, riding the subway in Toronto. And crossing over the pedestrian bridge on the way to grammar school, with steam-powered trains passing underneath (I only tried standing on the top of the bridge with the steam engine passing directly below once - I got covered in soot and sent home to change, a rather long walk). I moved to Mexico City at the end of 1967. Mexico City was hosting the XIX Summer Olympics the following summer and had set out to construct their first subway line, an ambitious and risky undertaking in a city with frequent (daily) earthquakes. But the line was built and then another and another. The first carriages came from France and featured rubber wheels - so quiet and smooth, I'd never experienced anything like it! The reports in the newspaper during construction were fascinating as well - it was said that for every kilometer of tunnel dug, enough 'ancient artifacts' were uncovered that could fill another Archeological Museum in its entirety! Delightful years indeed - thanks for this documentary, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it 💖 🇨🇦

a documentary that must be 4 years old... line 14 has been open for more than a year on the northern section. We opened the southern extension of the M4 and the northern extension of the M12 east for April. The next few years will have on average two new metro/RER/GPE extensions. The Opera pits well still exists but you have to twist your neck to see it from the metro.

Modern English is 26% Norman French vocabulary and 26% Latin vocabulary. During the 17th century, French replaced Latin as the most important language of diplomacy and international relations (lingua franca). It retained this role until approximately the middle of the 20th century.

We had two tunnel-boring machines in San Francisco affectionately named Mom Chung and Big Alma, after Dr. Margaret "Mom" Chung, and "Big Alma" de Bretteville Spreckels, two women both famous for their roles in San Francisco history. They excavated and constructed the 1.7-mile-long tunnels at a pace of approximately 40 feet per day. The Central Subway extension is due to open later this year.

Awh, I can't really watch this episode. I watched 2 other documentaries of this series while working on a project, so I can't be actively watching it all the time. But I do listen to it and look every once in a while to get an idea of the things shown. Most of this documentary is about the information and the video is an addition to that. Anyways, to get back on topic, I can't really watch this episode because the French is subtitled instead of dubbed. So I miss a lot of information. I think dub is also important for accessibility reasons since not everyone can see well enough to read the subtitles or read fast enough to keep up with the subtitles. If this is one of the earlier episodes in the series and the later ones are dubbed for this reason then that's great! I hope future documentaries are all more accessible. I might come back to this documentary if I have the time to actively watch it. Either way, I'd at least like to thank you for making this documentary available for free on KZfaq even if it has a little bit of an accessibility issue :)
