Asia's Largest Slum, India's Richest City | Mumbai: A Tale of Contrasts | Free Documentary
Extreme India - Cow Vigilantes, Disabled Dating & More: • Extreme India: Cow Vig...
It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

I went to India in 1998. The population, slums, traffic, trains, etc. were shocking, to say the least. Seeing it in person will change you forever. My heart breaks for the impoverished people there. Despite all the craziness, most people were very kind. The food was amazing, and there was a lot of beauty, culture, and history to take in. Cheers to the man working on train safety and the leopard caretakers. I hope the big business stops forcing the slums encroachment into leopard territory ! ✌️ ☮️ 🇮🇳

While it is not the responsibility or obligation of the rich to help the poor, it would be nice if they did. In a country where a wealthy businessman can spend 1 billion to build a mansion and 100 million can be spent on a wedding, the chasm between rich and poor is so wide.

The top 10 billion and trillionaires could, by their wealth alone, solve world hunger, water access and homelessness. In the gulf states they need Laborer, streets sweepers, toilet cleaners. In Africa plantation workers and other menial jobs are paying better. Therefore these folks should be send to these countries to have a better salary and contribute to India economic growth.

In the gulf they are treated as slave labour and have their passports taken from them so they can't leave after months and years of not being paid. They are beaten and abused and kept in very poor overcrowded conditions. There are few if any safety conditions in their work places. In Dubai labourers fall from those tall buildings every day. They die of heat stroke and malnutrition and don't even have enough water to drink or bathe in. They often go without food.

Are they feeding the dogs to the leopard ?? I think that poor black dog was killed. What a wicked town. Humans have been invasive to the Natural habitat of these Wild creatures, also destroying Nature, mountains, polluting rivers, & competing, depleting their foods. You need to develop more Cities outside of Mumbai and away from the forestry reserves, so poor people will find opportunities outside and not over-populate a limited land resource for humans & creatures.

There will always be poverty, there will always be slum areas, it’s happened for hundreds of years,we didn’t stop it then and we won’t stop it now even in 2024 it’s what man does because we can’t help ourselves.

a few years ago, China passed a law by which a family was not allowed to have more than 2 children. if India does not do the same, they will step on each other. it's about education.. knowing that you have no possibility to raise them, how can you have 10 children? they will end up as poor and without school as their parents.

The problem with the poor. They complained alot. Like dawg.. why are you always blaming the government for u being poor? When poor became middle class to being rich. Thats because they knew the hardship, so they worked hard for it. So if opportunity comes , then grab it. And if they give you a free roof over your head you better be thankful, then work twice harder so u can get to the top, then educate those others and teach em how to appreciate whats given to them. Then pass it on to the next. Then everyone will live comfortably. U dint have to be rich, jbut just a comfort homes.

They need the one child rule like they had in China or else these issues will never be resolved. And whoever can afford it should leave bringing as many family members with them as possible. The Indian community in the US does very well, it seems. Meaning they could maintain a connection to their culture without actually living in India.

The richest family in town resides in a 250-square-meter home. They have their own staff to attend to their needs. While they live in a rather stylish house, they prefer to eat with their hands instead of using knives and forks.

That is a tradition thousands of years old......do you eat burgers with a knife and fork? Hotdogs? Sandwiches?

@@Juanita-gf4te Sure, I do. If I'm not mistaken, millennia ago, it was common for people to hunt animals using stone axes and other ancient weapons. Some things should be upgraded.

@@connormcload9091 Why should they? I was married to a Hindu and lived in his world for 7 years. I learned to eat with my hands and the food tasted much better, without a mouthful of steel. Our kids ate that way too. Later when I returned to NZ I found it hard to use a knife and fork again, it spoiled the taste of the food.

@@Juanita-gf4te It's quite shocking that you even ask why. But since you did, I'll answer. The reason surgeries aren't done in hospitals with kitchen knives or other primitive tools, and why normal civilized folks use flush toilets and running water, is hygiene. Hygiene is key, and eating with your hands is basically stomping on hygiene with your feet. The fact that I had to explain this is just appalling.
