Today we meet Christopher and Melissa a young couple who are living life deeply for today and not putting off living until tomorrow. In their few young years they have had an incredibly varied and rewarding life, but that wasn't enough for them! They wanted to "wake up" and live their lives authentically and with true freedom. They have succeeded far beyond their young years. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THEIR KZfaq CHANNEL!!!! / @outdoorsisfree7922

I weep because I am in such a bad financial spot right now but I want to be happy and feel alive. Cancer didn't kill me but the financial devastation is. I still have a dream to be alive and live on the road. One day...

You don't have to start in good financial shape. We left out our first camper cost us $300, and two weeks later someone hit it while parked totaling it. We had nothing but each other and from there we kept at it until we could afford more. I am so sorry to hear about your cancer I am only aware how devastating it is because both our parent's have had it.

Wow! When you stumble across something you never expect to see again. I sold them that 7.3 a few years ago in Vegas. Pleased but not surprised is still trucking along. Super cool couple and remember them mentioning something about doing this. So happy for them! They definitely knew what they wanted in a truck. Please let them know if they ever need anything or are in my area again to not hesitate to contact me.

There ya go folks, the meaning of life summed up succinctly and honestly. Fabulous young couple and MR BOB !!! What I ADORE about your interviews is you let people talk, you never interject or interrupt and you always afford everyone the deepest respect and dignity yet still ask the deeper more pertinent questions. I am not a nomad but I do believe that you may well be the catalyst for huge change for many people.

OMG!!!> I couldn't believe I actually heard that line. Being in touch with death, knowing we are going to die is what puts us in touch with life, and what we want and need to do in this short time we have here on earth. This isn't just a little interview with a nomadic couple. This is a truly revelational conversation that I have had trouble for quite a few years putting into words. We are in a society that works us to death for the good of something other then our own health and our own mental well being. I spent 30 years as a paramedic, respiratory therapist, director of many medical departments in hospitals, and after a forced early retirement I am finally living. Not traveling, not "nomadic", but sitting still long enough to read and learn what I want to for me not for someone else. My wife is a school counselor and loves it, but she's younger and it works for her and us, but honestly, working to live and then living to die is such a short term and potentially meaningless end. I've lost so many important people in my life from 30's to 60's before they ever had a chance to retire. That just doesn't make any sense. Unfortunately it boils down to needing enough money to live well. That is quite the trick, if we can just figure that out. What a challenge.!!. God Bless.

This couple gets it. I just turned 60, and I am finally breaking myself out of the rut/coffin/cell that I have been assembly lined into. About two years ago I saw my first van life video and it blew my mind. I have been retired for three years and home ownership is never going to happen for me, and even apartment living is becoming too pricy for me to live a comfortable life. So, in September of this year, I will be buying my own Ram Promaster 3500 Hightop Extended WB and I will be building my own home on wheels. I am for the first time in my life, excited by my future even though I have no idea what it will bring! I hope I haven’t left it too long, that I have another 20+ years to go wherever I want and do whatever I want when I get there!! The good news is, once I build my van, I will easily be able to live quite comfortably on my pensions. So this couple living their lives as they are are a good 40 years ahead of the curve. Congratulations to them.

My mom gave me the best piece of advice as she was dying of cancer. "Michele, Go out and have fun while you're young? We worked to save up to retire and travel? Now we're to old and sick too so that. Go have some fun." So DH ands i bought two Harleys and did add much riding add we could. We had a wonderful life. Now we're old and sick, with few regrets!! I put about 90,000 miles on my 4 Harleys total and saw some really wonderful things with my best friend, my husband Dan. And were still married!!

I've never fit into the mold of what my fellow humans tell me I should be doing or where I should be in life and that leaves me feeling like such a failure. In 1976 I was 26 and Chris & Melissa look like they were teleported from my 1970s homestead porch to your interview! They have the attitude we had in our Mother Earth " back to the land" lifestyle. It ironic that Jim & I built or farm cottage and moved in, in December 2016. I had a brilliant career in high tech and could not stay in the fast lane. Kept jumping in and back out again, for 30 years and finally turned my back on it in 2016. So MUCH happier to live back in the woods! I will follow their channel with interest to see how they are doing in 2021. ~ Diane

When they were talking about security ie: security in owning a home or security in having a job etc ..... when you get right down to it, there isn't ANY security in any of those things, your as secure as your boss or the bank wants you to be. I mean look how many lost their jobs followed by loosing their homes in 2008, where was ALL that security then. So I am envy of their lifestyle along with all those folks out there enjoying the nomad lifestyle and hope to be one of them some day.

I've been so impressed, not only by my own kids but by their friends as well. Really well-rounded, smart, and thoughtful humans. Much better than I was or my friends were or my older siblings. Watching this at 58 years old. I do understand these 2 . I come from a outdoor/camping back ground. Parents divorced with different thoughts on that. Mom, a hippie just go with it. Camp out under the stars. Had a couple of vans at different to times. Dad, hunter outdoorsman truck and camper. Was in a 4wheel drive group. Mom, just kind of lived life with not much future planning, like pensions, retirement etc.. Dad, skilled worker retirement plan and all that. At one point in my life a friend and I we're going to live in a teepee. Having kids changes ideas and thoughts and direction. Fast forward, now we have a small house and a motor home. The motor home we bought last October. Big change from tent camping. A lot to learn. it's good to have KZfaq with all the RVing sites. I don't think a day goes by that I'm not watching a few. Not having a real connection with material things is a plus. Though my husband loves stuff 😩😊 we are both working at this time, so we have only been doing short trips figuring things out. The plan is, at this time, to keep our house and travel during the better road months. For staters. Who knows what we will end up doing after that......... I rarely say no to an adventure.

Bless your hearts, you are both more mature than most people closer to my age of retirement, as I'll be 65 in May, and just decided for sure yesterday that I'll do what I can to sell everything I own in my one bedroom condo that I'm renting. I also have an '03 Ford T-Bird convertible and hardtop with only 54,400 miles on it. Now to find a Van I can convert for myself at 5'1' and my kitten a bit under one year old. I'm hoping there is someone that maybe has a cat and how it works for them. I've been watching everything by CheapRVliving I can find. Several builds I saw were almost exactly what I know would work for me. Listening to what Christopher said is enough to live on and I have a bit more than double so know I'd be fine and able to save for repairs when needed, etc. I'm getting so excited. May Lord God keep you safe, healthy and happy on your journey. Maybe I'll see you at a get together in the near future. Hugs to all KZfaqrs and RV'ers.

Congratulations,, I really liked this interview and the philosophy of life and death expressed. This 72 year old man has learned a lot from this interview and actually several others that Bob has posted.. I am doing my diligence and every day I am more convinced that I need to participate in this life changing style of life. I have a Honda Ridgeline and T@B camping trailer, so I have a rig that's this is doable in. I will have to just take the leap of faith, and perhaps stop overthinking this and start my adventure.. I am definitely planning to make it the 2018 RTR in January,, And thanks Bob for deciding to have the RTR again.. I hope to meet many of the folks who's video's I have watched and certainly including Christopher and Melissa.. Thanks to you two and Bob.

What a great interview Bob! It is refreshing to see young people with the head "well screwed in their shoulders" To have hope we need many more like them. I like to mention that the nomad community or people are not only great individuals in USA but all around the world. Enjoyed the interview very much but would like to comment on one aspect. If as you say, you "want to be good in your heart and good in your soul", then maybe you should be a little less judgmental in saying that people who work a 9 to 5 are "zombies". We all walk our different paths to enlightenment. I was doing what you are doing when I was 20, traveling for 1.5 years in a VW camper. It was under a full moon in the interior of British Columbia one evening when I realized that my genetic make up had deemed me to be a "creative type". I felt an urge and impulse that I wanted to build things and create things. I came back to civilization, got a couple degrees and found my ideal job designing and creating mechanical things, exciting things. I spent the next 30 years having the time of my life. I couldn't wait to get to work every day. Some days I was having so much fun at work, I just stayed and worked all night without coming home at all. I retired with a pension and collect social security. We own our home on a beautiful 39,000 acre lake. The 9 to 5 did well by me and it was the opposite of being a "zombie". We travel 10,000 miles a year since retiring 10 years ago without the worry of how we're going to pay for it. I will say there are two things you said that were spot on .... health is absolutely the greatest gift. Coming to terms with the finite time we have in this physical world is the greatest impetus to explore yourself and your surroundings. I also agree that the people you meet in your travels are the most unexpected joys of doing it :-)
@CheapRVliving
@CheapRVliving 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for making a very good point. But, let me offer two thoughts in response. 1) Of course not 100% are zombies, but statistically, 70% are. The gallop poll has been doing a poll of job engagement every year for many years, and almost always roughly 30% of people are engaged at work like you were, they love going to work. 50% are not engaged, meaning they don't like their jobs, but they have to go so they do. 20% are actively disengaged, meaning they hate their job and go to work and actively try to hurt their employer in any way they can get away with. 70% are zombies. See this: www.gallup.com/poll/181289/majority-employees-not-engaged-despite-gains-2014.aspx 2) Have you thought about the impact of your life on the planet and our environment? The average upper middle-class American is doing horribly devastating things to it. In the future, billions will curse us as evil, selfish monsters. But we are too mindless to care about anyone but ourselves or do anything about it. That may not apply to you, but it certainly applies to the vast majority of us!!!!
@outdoorsisfree7922
@outdoorsisfree7922 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Yoly! We do only use the "zombie" word to demonstrate how we see the blank faces, the sadness and misunderstanding. Luckily living on the road allows us the freedom to not have large bills to pay. Working the 9-5 jobs generally forces one into requiring more resources from this world. As a couple we needed to own two cars, etc. We are trying to find other ways to spread happiness and that often makes little money, but it keeps us in peace with how we treat the world. It makes us so happy to know that you found such purpose in the world! This is us following our hearts too.

I can appreciate what you are doing and I am happy for you also. As a product of the 60s, I have been a pacifist and non meat eater for 47 years. I discovered that much of the searching as a nomad in my youth was to discover myself and start down a path of spiritual evolution. I practiced meditation and yoga and found my path. I just don't believe in sweeping generalities when putting labels on people.

I don't think he was talking about people like you, but more about the people like myself who are not happy or fulfilled in their jobs and are mindlessly in a routine that is not allowing them to be all they can be. You are a very lucky person. My husband is like you. He can't sleep at night for looking forward to the next day. He is a talented and award winning sports and editorial cartoonist. But a lot of us haven't found our calling, if we have one.
