edward18517 The last good Sonic game was over 20 years ago. I really, really feel sorry for Sonic fans. Every time they go "It's ok now, he's been to rehab, it's going to be good again". And then get Sonic home and all he does is drink, snort lines of coke and vomit on the carpet, before they send him back to rehab saying "Oh he's just having some trouble". Sonic needs to either be brought totally back to it's 2d glory days or just die. The saddest thing is that a lot of the Sonic "fans" never played a good Sonic game, it was before their time and they venerate it out of some passed down nostalgia, which they neither understand nor question.

I've been playing since 2 and I can safely say that the series is just fine until Heroes hits, MAYBE afterwards.

I'd say the last Sonic game that felt like a Sonic game (story/atmosphere-wise) would be Unleashed. Sonic Colors is fun, but it is annoying as hell to listen to and experience the story of. Generations isn't much better in that department, but it at least doesn't have as much talking and was more fun. Lost World was just...eh...And Boom's a new thing entirely.

The problem comes from the "Never judge a book by it's cover" argument. More often videogames that are made very similar or very much so the likeness of another are just seen as "ripoffs," a cash in for "hey, this game looks popular. Let me redo the sprites/artwork, keep the mechanics the same and sell it as it's own thing." Not to mention more so that a majority of these called "ripoffs" don't do so well. This experience leads people to distrust any game that seems to fall under this category, and immediately speak bad about it. But yeah, you shouldn't judge a game before you try it out.

Honestly, the association is what got me to buy it. It looks like a Sonic game at first glance, but a DAMNED GOOD one full of really cool, original platforming elements, utterly gorgeous settings and a nice-looking cast of well-realized characters. And it's been a long, LONG time since I played a really good Sonic game, so that alone got me super-excited. Plus, I'm a huge Sonic SatAM fan, and the tone and atmosphere of the story (plus the '90s Saturday morning cartoon-esque voice acting -- which I love, BTW!) absolutely *screamed* SatAM to me (and I later discovered that wasn't entirely coincidental, since I guess this started life as a SatAM fan project?). So I knew I had to try this game out. And not only was I NOT disappointed, I was absolutely blown away. As far as I'm concerned, if this has to be compared to Sonic, then let it be, because it's easily the best Sonic game ever made. I prefer this by leaps and bounds over even Sonic 2 and 3, in pretty much every regard. It's an absolute masterpiece, and I urge anyone who's dismissing it as a "Sonic clone" to ask themselves: why is that a bad thing? I mean, do you really trust the modern Sonic Team to give you a game this good? This is what Sonic fans have wanted for years now. This is pretty much the crystallization of the entire "speedy platformer" genre. Those who dismiss it because it looks too much like games they love are... not really doing this whole "logic" thing right. ;)

Thing is, I'm not even sure how that's a criticism. Because it doesn't just look like a Sonic game, it looks like the GOOD Sonic games. I would consider it high praise to be compared to those masterpieces. So..........

CTylerPrower I agree the games scheme (level layout and all) seems to be a direct copy of classic Sonic games with characters and some extra abilities being the only change. Its happened before with games such as Angry Birds that should not even exists, games that plagiarized another and got instant fame for it. At the very least they should be forced to pay royalties to the games they copy.

Because it is. People say NO IT'S GOT MORE RISTARRRR. Not sure what they're trying to accomplish with that since a.) Ristar borrows a lot from Sonic and b.) they're by the same company. They say Gunstar heroes and Rocket Night and Megaman X..but let's get real people. Adding in a freaking airboost and having a character that's essentially the same as the fast one but only slower and uses some slightly different mod of transportation sometimes =/= "more _______ than it is Sonic". That's like talking Sonic and the Black Knight or Shadow the Hedgehog (yes take the games exactly as is), reskinning the characters adding a hovering spin move and a few more kick animations to the characters' movesets and saying "it's only a homage to the series. Actually, it's more of a slight love tap to that general era of gaming" It's a fucking ripoff. Literally all people are using to say it's different from Sonic is the airboost. AN AIRBOOST. Different from Sonic. An airboost. Just because Sonci didn't have one in the classic era. He's had one ever since around 1999/2000. Eve if he didn't, how can you try to defend it when the other 98% is still Sonic..?

High speed was a reward for your platforming skills.

You just said it with the platforming part: There are people who prefer the Unleashed/boost formula of recent years, and let's not mention the Adventure era formula. It seems I'm one of the very few people who don't mind experimentation and find enjoyment in Sonic games of all eras :S

They're not just "spamming projectiles" They have actual individual patterns you have to memorize, like you know, every game with boss fights. Were you actually doing that or were you just going in head first? Sounds like it's the latter.

To be honest, I did felt it was going to be a bit of a Sonic clone with melee attacks. But it turn out better than I expected, and the animation cutscenes makes it better. Glad I gave it a chance. ^w^
