Freedomland was an amusement park in the Bronx in what is now Coop City , it was open from 1960 thru 1964. I remember going there as a kid...

Wow I have heard stories of freedom land years ago. Now it's Co-op City. I'll never forget the day we moved in Co-op it was a whole new world coming from the South Bronx in 1974. We had good times growing up in Co-op.

I grew up on Simpson Street and was driving trucks throughout the Bronx and the other boroughs. I spent a lot of time at FreedomLand, I even delivered some of the paper bags they gave you for your lunch when you purchased the food there. When they closed the park and started digging the first holes for the Co-op City foundations, I started to cry like a baby knowing this will be gone forever. Nothing remains of the park except memories and some pictures we have, plus, three gate tickets in our memory box.

As a three year old, I never realized just how big Freedomland was! Thanks for posting this! I remember that fire exhibit, it seemed so huge and real back then!

What memories this brings back to a 62-year-old man. I remember so vividly all the different areas of the park. A Brooklyn police officer and close friend of the family took my sister Annie and myself to the park when we were kids. Thanks Tommy.

Carine Prepper that's so cool. Do you know why they tore it down to replace it with Co-op City?

I remember my father taking me to freedom land when I was a little boy . We went on the first weekend it was opened. We stepped out of the car and we almost didn't get to the entrance to the park because the asphalt was still soft and hadn't set completely. Funny what you remember 60 years later. It was a great place for a kid growing up in the Bronx to go to.

I went to Freedom land once in 1964. I was 15. I remember thinking of it as the Eastcoast version of disneyland!

Greatest park ever. My family must have been there at least five times. Some of the feature rides and attractions not even mentioned were, The San Francisco Earthquake ride, The Civil War Battlefield, The Casa Loco in the Southwest, where there was a gunfight going on between the sheriff and the bank robbers, There was lots of great food places too., My Father liked the Brass Rail, or the New Orleans fried chicken. Great memories. Sad the land developers took it down.

My first biological father took me to the Freedom Land Amusement Park by car when I was 12 to 17 years old. In April 1965, my birth mother got married the second time to a widower with three children; moved to dwell in his Linden, NJ Colonial Family Home as I was hired at the Occupational Center of Union County (NJ) for 8 years, moved to Colorado Springs, CO via plane to spend 11 years-3months while I'm at the second shelter workshop there. Then my birth mother/Stepfather and I returned via plane to the Bronx Eastchester Co-op City to live at the NYCHA River Bay Apartments/Townhouses from June 29, 1984 to May 18, 1987. Now I missed my birth mother and her family, R. I. P.!

Growing up in the Bronx, Freedomland might as well have been on the dark side of the Moon. We were lucky if our mom could afford one of those 10 cent traveling rides that came by right behind the Mr Softee truck on occasion.

Freedomland was pretty cool, I was just a teenager, but I always kind of resented it because before that it was a really cool swamp that I liked to play in. Just like the area in Throggs Neck that's now Trump's golf course. They were the last areas left in the Bronx that I feel should have been left as wildlife preserves. There were pheasants, owls, hawks, snakes, voles, possums, black widows, rabbits, hedgehogs, and certain plants I just don't see anymore. Progress?

Does anyone have any information about the Mack Rides built "Meteor" roller coaster that once operated at Freedomland? Because rcdb doesn't have any images of it and the only information about it besides seating layout and where it relocated to.
