I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of trolley ride through Downtown New Bedford, MA in 1921 great scenes of an era gone by 103 years ago, Produced by The Union Street Railway Co. commemorating 45 years of service, Fort Phoenix Beach in Fairhaven, MA and Lincoln Park
Video Restoration Process:

✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)

Living in Massachusetts myself and being someone very much interested in local history, I very much wondered what my area looked like a hundred years ago. I’ve looked through old postcards, old city directories and maps and was only able to get a basic sense of what it may have looked like around here a century ago, but this video took it to a whole new level. Quite stunning.

My grandmother lives in Massachusetts along with my other family members she was 17 18 during 1921 and she's still alive she said it actually looked like this people still used horses alot more cause it was hard to afford the new cars

I watched a minute before reading the description, I thought, there's no way this is new bedford, but it is! I was born and raised in the new bedford area, just moved away a year ago at 43. I miss it, but this is an incredible look at a historically significant city. Thanks for this!

i thought that it was Boston until I saw Ford” on the streetcar: Boston still had a horse-drawn trolley then too that streetcar is still around, it’s up in Maine

A 100 year old time capsule. There might be a few civil war veterans being honored at a street car. Perhaps this might be in connection with a dedication to a Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the fall of 1924, in a park in New Bedford. Nice work NASS.

I grew up in the county New Bedford is in (Bristol) some 15 miles from New Bedford. My family still live in the area. I had no idea New Bedford ever had all those streetcars. Thanks for this look at and Era gone by. It was very enjoyable watching this.

Hi Mass,, great video my son Max and I love the sounds all the horses walking and the sounds of the cars.. the people look so happy 😁 and smiling at the camera the kids are running around catching up to the horses 🐴🐴 the title says Massachusetts we lived in Boston Massachusetts it looks like it might be on Boylston Street there were old trolley cars in those days on that street.. in the swimmers with their swimsuits might have been filmed at Revere Beach 🏖️🏖️ where we used to go.. great wonderful video 👍👍.

102 years ago. Look at how intrigued everyone was by the presence of a movie camera -- a real rare novelty at the time. The eerie thing is that every one of these people are long, long dead.

When I was a kid 1924 didn't seem that far off. My father was born in 24' and a WW2 vet. I was born as the youngest in the mid late 50s and my father was still a young man. Now its starting to seem like ancient history.

I love these old restored films, to get a glimpse of the real past. Thanks for all your hard work! I think everybody in camera range looks so happy, smiling and waving due to the director riding in the horse cart next to a giant noisy hand-cranked camera in the dawn of film, yelling through a megaphone "You're in a movie, so let's see everybody smile and wave!" Even the boys on bikes are wearing ties.... Noting others say it's probably 1921, when you-know-who was still an unknown and mediocre Austrian war-veteran landscape painter, that the symbols at 4:40 were still a traditional good-luck symbol from centuries before. ;-)

Fantastic video, again you have done a superb job of it. Wish I could have some of those old trolley cars, a wonderful time in history to experience, many of this young people will live to see jet aircraft and man land on the moon. Of course many of the young boys will see WW2 and see a lot of horrible things. My Grandparents were alive at this time as well as my Great Grandparents and Great Great Grandparents, I was born in 1956, so I did get to meet them before they passed, I do remember most of their stories but it was hard to relate but so happy in my older years to having that experience. 🤗

I'm assuming that the celebration was showing the retirement of the horse-drawn trolleys versus the mechanical power trolleys. even the youngest a child shown in this scene has lived his or her life. Even the young women who had about seven and a half minutes for strutting their stuff in their risque swimsuits for the time. Any young men they were wearing full-body swimsuits as well. So this video is a treasure because there's not that many videos around during that time. Then you updated it and I'm assuming preserved it. So the color is a shin makes it even better to watch. Thanks for bringing it to us. And I hope embarrassed reads it and go back and watch it again and say wow 😳😳, if they haven't already. These were great grandparents maybe two or three great back in our ancestry.

@@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525 i only found that out because a search if New Bedford horse-drawn streetcars came ip with the history of that very streetcar: it still exists, 138 years old and hasn’t been driven by horses since 1977 but alive and well in Maine

@@bostonrailfan2427 but thanks for researching that. I find this stuff very interesting. I've traveled all over the country except for the northwestern part of the United states. Now I must admit I've not been north of New York either. My point is that this reminds me of another place. Nothing in common except for its a piece of history that still operating. Out in Kansas there's a place called wamego KS. It's the home to The wizard of Oz museum or at least one of them. But on the other side of the street there's a park. And the deeper you go into this nice park the for the back in time you go. They have a miniature train to scale that goes around and through parts of the park. Now it's been years since I've been there. But at the time it was operated by volunteers. I don't remember it costing anything if it did it was next to nothing. They don't take the children and adults on a tour of the park and is very scenic. Only connection between this Kansas town is preserving history. Well they're both mechanical means of transportation too.

Nass, Another great video. Love those 1920's streetcars but poor horses pulling some of them at 2:25 feel sorry for them. Plus wonder what that was for at 5:55 with the elderly gentlemen. Probably some of them in their younger years drove or ridden in Wells-Fargo stagecoaches. Thanks for the upload.

…you do realize horses pulled the trolleys before the 1890s, right? the streetcar shown was made to be pulled by horses and to this day has never been upgraded to electric motors and the gentleman likely was one of the few still qualified to drive the trolley as his younger colleagues are too young to have been born when horses were used

I had no idea New Bedford had trolleys 100 years ago, and horse drawn streetcars before that one of which they kept for special events! And the destinations: Rockland Village, Fairhaven, Rivet Street, Buzzards Bay, Lincoln Park, etc. How things have changed since then.

Yes - many reasons for it - the destruction of our cities after WWII probably being the most major, though as well the Influenza pandemic starting in 1918 was taken much more seriously, unfortunately unlike our current one (SARS-Cov-2 +) which is allowed to rage on killing and disabling to no end! By the time of this film (1921) I think their pandemic was about finished. Wild that the original SARS outbreak in 2003 was even more deadly and our society was able to contain it from destroying the world then - it seems like we’ve lost that ability in less than the past 20 years! Very sad!

It would be great to know about the camera used to capture the film and the people operating it. It's obvious that the people in the film knew that they were being filmed. What is the backstory? And it looks like a carriage ride, not a trolley ride. Thanks for creating and posting but there's a lot missing.

the reason for that horse-drawn streetcar being used that day in 1922 as seen in two places in the video is due to the 50th anniversary of streetcars serving the city

I tracked down the first street via the theatre ( 883 Purchase Street, New Bedford) but for the rest I'm stuck. Anyone know the specific locations of these streets?

I was able to figure out the streetcar barn on Weld Street about mile and half north of the downtown. I used to live in Mattapoisett, just east of Fairhaven in the early 60's. I think the trolleys were eliminated in the late 1940's. Union Street Railway was one of the more profitable public transportation companies. Warren Buffett had ownership for a short while when he acquired Berkshire Hathaway at the beginning of his career.
