Stab Vest Ratings: What Do They Mean?

Spike 1? Edge 3? Level II/Spike 1 combination? Whether you are in a correctional environment or out on the street stab vests are some of the least understood safety equipment public safety professionals have.
Here we discuss: why stab proof vests really aren't, what the difference between Spike and edge threat ratings is, what the different (1,2,3) energy ratings mean, and how stab vest ratings were created.
In US jails and prisons "shanks" & "shivs" are the primary threat. Jailers, Booking Officers, Jail Guards, Correctional Officers, and support staff of all varieties are wise to utilize stab vests or correctional armor to give them a leg up.
It might not be as sexy to talk about complex Joule ratings and testing procedures instead of shooting at ballistic armor but it is important for those who rely on stab armor to have a realistic expectation of the level of protection it provides.

The hospital I work public safety at we are required to wear level IIIA body armor, however there is no requirement for stab/spike rating. So I took it upon myself to get two 8x10 stab/spike 2 inserts for the front and back. I have to be honest though, I'm more concerned about getting stabbed by a pair of scissors or a knife than I am getting shot, but I realize that either have a rather high chance of happening.

There are several online venders who carry them. They are generally called "trauma plates" in the US. The steel plates are clearly also going to be highly stab resistant so you will sometimes hear guys refer to steel trauma plates as "stab plates". Here are a few links to venders in no particular order: www.galls.com/trauma-plates/ www.bulletproofme.com/Body_Armor_Accessories_Concealable.shtml www.chiefsupply.com/search/?q=trauma+plate www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=7x9+trauma+plate&adpos=1o1&ul_noapp=true&geo_id=10232&MT_ID=69&crlp=90702935322_857&keyword=7x9+trauma+plate&rlsatarget=kwd-163126448682&device=c&crdt=0&treatment_id=7&clk_rvr_id=1028665390441&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.X7x9+trauma+plate+steel.TRS0&_nkw=7x9+trauma+plate+steel&_sacat=0

That way they don't have to get up close and personal with a knife, they can try to kill you from a distance, spraying bullets from automatic weapons. Just like the USA. You think only good people can get hold of guns? Great thinking there Sherlock. Oh, and you can legally own and shoot guns in the UK, but there are many more restrictions and safeguards. Which is why gun crime is pretty low. I'd like it to stay that way thanks.

I’m pretty excited for my safe life armor to arrive. I bought the concealed three enhanced and I honestly can’t believe how many people are against armor. It’s a passive way or defense it makes no sense to be against. Especially when all you have to do is rock a face shot or a leg shot and the fight will end. But even people who don’t wish to carry a firearm can still use armor as a means of defense from an attacker. Such a shame all the reactionary people have to demonize something that is literally only capable of saving a life. Thanks for your videos man!

The problem in the UK with these vests are that they generally don't cover some of the most common and deadly situations or you could say angles or positions. Knives tend to travel along the big V shaped openings at the body in a fight between legs, side and arm, shoulder and head to unfortunately the most vulnerable areas. The stab through the armpit area when grabbing, pushing, punching as well stabs and slashes to the neck and head. A lot of criminals are punching with the blade similar to haymakers onto upper targets or attack the groin area when getting overwhelmed or pummeled from a cowering position. Gangs have learned to use knives more effective, attacks become more and more targeted.
@another3997
@another3997 Жыл бұрын
Yes, people can be hurt or killed whilst wearing body armour. A vest is basically designed to protect the heart, lungs and upper spine in the places most likely to be struck. The big areas front and back. Every armour has it's limitations. A stab vest won't save you if someone rams a huge spike through your skull or slices a main artery in your leg etc. Do you suggest that we dress head to toe in armour like a medieval knight? The real problem in the UK is too many people think carrying and USING a knife is acceptable. For a lot of them, especially teenagers, who tend not to think of consequences, it's only when they find themselves facing a long time in prison, that they realise how stupid they were.

For anyone looking for a good stab vest: I recommend the PPSS covert style stab vest. It's made from polycarbonate ( a hard but flexible, nearly unbreakable plastic). It's very comfortable for a "hard shell" type stab vest (considerably more comfortable than the one I was issued) and it protects you from punches and kicks as well as blades and spikes. The only drawback is that it does not overlap on the sides of your torso, so there is an unprotected area on both sides of your body. Been wearing it at work for about 14 months now, would buy it again ina heartbeat.

43 Joules is how much energy 250 gram blade carries at 18.5 m/s or 67 km/h, such as if it was thrown at you. If you were stabbed and the combined mass (blade and arm) that exerts inertial force onto vest through the blade was 5 kg, then that.s 4.1 m/s or 15 km/h. For comparison, a .22LR bullet carries about 150 J of energy, more or less depending on cartridge. A typical pistol bullet has 600-800 J, rifle bullets are in 2500-3500 J range and shotgun bullets usually exceed 4000 J - buckshot is losing energy rapidly as it travels through the air but at point blank range it also has over 4000 J of energy combined.

So hypothetically could you wear a stab proof vest over a bulletproof vests and have protection from both? From what I understand your mobility would be limited a lot.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
+jaime munoz You *could* wear any combination of body armor. That said there are far better options than wearing one vest over another. Combination stab/ballistic vests exist and are bulky, but more manageable than wearing two. You could also wear the vest for your primary threat and put a plate in to protect against the less likely threat. Commonly, this is a ballistic vest with stab resistant plates in the front and rear plate pockets. This is what I usually suggest for comfort, cost, and a balance of protection.

London UK. They don't aim for the chest. "Experienced' street blades slash at your femoral arteries, neck, inner elbow, face across your eyes, or up into your armpit. What good is a stab vest? Does it matter when they sidestep the protection?
@water1374
@water1374 2 жыл бұрын
This logic is always stupid no matter what form of protection we're talking about. "Oh well this protection doesn't prevent against (Situational thing X) so it must be completely useless." Yeah sure, if you get unlucky and get stabbed in the neck, OBVIOUSLY, your CHEST armor isn't going to prevent that. But do you know what part of the body usually gets stabbed in most situations? THE CHEST.

+Mistake Marvin probably an old m18 taser in a drop leg or "subload" holster. Drop leg holsters were pretty en vogue back a few years ago. Even I had one for a short time. Then we all realized it was really hard to run with the things on and they were unnecessarily hard to holster while offering little advantage unless you were repelling on a regular basis for work. Some agencies still require tasers be in drop leg holsters to keep them from being confused with handguns. (The wisdom of this is surely in dispute, there are much easier and more efficient solutions). As far as the gun... There are guys who do unusual things with their rigs as they get older for medical reasons, and others who do goofy stuff because they don't know any better or think it is cool. (Fyi it isn't) Without more info I couldn't speculate further.

Problem is we have a hard enough time around here just getting folks to buy and wear a vest. Even more trouble getting Security companies and pd's to buy body armor of any kind. Double the price and weight and it is even harder. A good solution that I use is to add hard trauma or "stab" plates to the ballistic vest that increase both puncture resistance and ballistic performance. They're cheap too.

@freefieldtraining

All ballistic vests I've handled and tested have proven to be slash proof. The issue is with stab/spike resistance. Chain mail has very limited spike resistance and no better slash resistance than Kevlar. Chain mail can cover more area (arms, hands, neck) but, so can modern Kevlar/spectra/dynema options and thise armaid fabrics are significantly lighter than chain mail.

Most stabbing occur with large kitchen knives like this one : they're very good at stabbing people in the street etc. They're not strong or anything but they don't need to be as civilian stabbing isn't warzone "Im in the FOA tryna survive I use my knife to stab terros and dismantle tanks ": they're long, thin and pointy: they're perfectly fit to deal with meat . Tanto knives are the less effective piercing tips. For the same reason that they're strong : they're obtuses and thick, and that's why they suck at penetration.

Solution to both problems... Just get a plate carrier with plates inside then you have a bullet proof carrier and a knife cant stab through a steel plate! Expensive yes but id rather go that route.

A real chain mail steel vest weighs about half a hundred weight so is unrealistic to wear. Stab vests are a good idea - I have a combined bullet/stab vest and the stab resistance is provided by steel overlapping discs making it spike proof as well. Still too heavy and bulky! At the moment I have investigated the new soft materials especially the 'polythene' from China. The material is compressed under many tons and therefore the strike plates that are manufactured usually have about 45 layers. Demo videos show a single sheet of the material is cut and pierce proof so 45 compressed layers should protect from any spike or knife attack. The actual tests for stab proof vests don't really go far enough to inspire confidence and seem more designed to allow the manufacturers to achieve a rating for their product. Example: The spike and knife test is done as a drop test. 43 joules sounds great until it is explained as the force of a baseball thrown from ten feet away travelling at ten miles per hour. Or half the force of a normal punch! A real test should be a full force hammer action spike attack carried out by a strong healthy middleweight man with speed and momentum. The only real objection to people wearing body armour is that gangs and violent people seem to adopt it to make themselves more dangerous to the public. My only worry is that body armour for joe public has become such a money earner now that big companies will sell the product with assurances that cannot be tested until you are in the worse scenario and depending on the vest to save your life. My advice - buy one of the plates and strap it onto a side of beef and attack it with every sharp weapon you can find - proof of the pudding is in the eating! Test before you invest, try before you buy...

+jayden arnold I am a cop. My credentials though, while impressive, are far less important than the fact that everything I present here is independently verifiable. I encourage people to verify the info (as you should with any open source internet info). To this end I fill the videos, description, and comments section with citations and links where you can ultimately get hard copies of the source material if you like. All the information is already out there I'm just packaging it in a way that is (hopefully) more palatable to a wider audience.
