My best friend passed away a few months ago. Called me from prison because he wanted to get a job with me when he was out on work release, so I said of course, you're my brother, but there's a catch. Since we were both recovering opiate addicts, the deal was we had to be looking out for each other and if we see something, say something. I had my best homie, my brother back with me every day again and we were sober and thriving, everything finally felt like it was falling into place. But then our work furloughed us for a week, and he was struggling with not being able to see his kids and was depressed and didn't speak up, and in a moment of weakness he relapsed and OD'd on fentanyl in his car at 5 am with nobody around to narcan him. Shook my entire world to the core, as well as his mother and the many, many people who absolutely loved him. His mom let me buy his car from her so that I can put some time and money into it like he talked about when we went to pick it up together. I think I'm going to write something special for him to this instrumental so I can play it to honor his memory. RIP Corey, gone but never forgotten. And to anyone in recovery, please, if the times get tough going and you start feeling lost and wanting that escape, please reach out to someone and talk. Don't let yourself suffer in silence or struggle alone. To anyone in active addiction, if this strikes a chord with you, please know that recovery is absolutely possible. I was absolutely sure that I was going to die from an overdose or health complications from the drugs. I was so lost that I tattooed "hopeless" on my knuckles because I really believed there was no way out. I know it may sound cliché, but if I can do it, you absolutely can too. If you decide you want to live more than you want to numb, you can and will do it. Don't let pride keep you from reaching out to someone, anyone for help. There are people who care about you and want to see you come back, and there are resources out there to help you find your way through the dark. I know you can do it.
