The Beach Boys are one of he most iconic bands in history, having sold over 100 million records worldwide since their formation in the early sixties. This is their definitive story.
The group, 3 brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis alongside their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine signed to Capitol Records in 1962. Known for their distinctive vocal harmonies they went on to release their ground breaking album Pet Sounds in 1966, followed by Good Vibrations, one of their all time greatest songs. This amazing documentary covers their achievements with Pet Sounds but also deals with the difficulties Brian Wilson had with the drugs and the subsequent unreleased Smile album. This album, also called Teenage Symphony to God by Wilson, was said to be the greatest unreleased album ever made and in this film Brian describes the making of Smile as a period of craziness. At the end of the 60’s the band looked to Europe, and in particular it was England that embraced them, where they toured and released new albums for many more years. Included in the program are very insightful and personal interviews with Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and Van Dyke Parks as well as rare and previously unseen footage showing the group at home during their time in London. This is a fascinating program and MUST-HAVE for any fan of The Beach Boys!

“The beach life was NOT what” Mike Love “knew best”! He was a flatlander from Baldwin Hills who had to DRIVE to the beach. I have his senior yearbook, and he was a member of the Audio-Visual Club, which is just as nerdy as it sounds.

So right. Mike likes to tell how great of a surfer is and what an athlete he was in school. 1st of all he was not a surfer. He was a hodad, a guy who would go down to the beach with his surfboard and paddle out but never catch a wave. He did not know how to surf. In high school, He ran track. He couldn't throw a ball, couldn't catch a ball, and couldn't shoot a basketball. Yeah he was so overcome with jealousy, because his younger brother Stan was an all state basketball player who went to the University Oregon on a scholarship and was a first round draft choice in the NBA. By the way, Stan's son is NBAer Kevin Love. Mike's whole life is a talentless lie.

He may not have been an athlete but his voice was very much part of the iconic sound of the Beach Boys and he wrote many of the romantic lyrics of their wonderful songs!

The Beach Boys started in 1961, and released Surfin. They signed with Capitol Records in 1962 to make their first album. In 1963 they got worldwide success with Surfin USA and made hit album after hit album. The British Invasion was started by the Beatles in 1964. The Beach Boys competed with the Beatles. In 1965 The Beach Boys began experimented, mostly Brian Wilson. By 1966 they were beyond surf rock, and going into experimental styles. They released Pet Sounds after not good chart success, they promised Smile an album that would go beyond anything. But 1967 set them back with lawsuits, depression of Wilson and personal problems. It became the dud Smiley Smile. The Beatles got the best of them, The Beach Boys Lost success.

Unknown Productions they all did drugs, except for Love and Jardine. Don’t know if Johnston did, I doubt it, but I’m referring to the originals.

Jardine wrote or rewrote Sloop John B, and Help Me Rhonda. Love wrote Kokomo. Brian wrote the rest. Of course “with a little help” from his band mates.

Brian wrote virtually all their music thru mid-'67 (covers notwithstanding), with either Mike or some outside source contributing most of the lyrics (Al had no hand in writing "Help Me, Rhonda;" he merely sang lead on it... and he was merely the one who suggested to Brian that the group record the traditional folk song "Sloop John B."). After Brian got burned out on attempting to make _Smile_ , the others began picking up the creative slack and all writing songs for the group, though Brian would still make occasional contributions, eventually writing most of their 50th anniversary reunion album _That's Why God Made the Radio_ .

@@fbnflaviusbroadcastingnetw6786 Love was one of the biggest drug users in the band! This is what just about destroyed his mind and he had to take up meditation and all that other crap to cope. Just because he reformed first and lectured everyone about the dangers of drug use did not mean he was not a huge user. It was after all of these drugs that he began to claim that he wrote all of Brian's sings which, we know is not true.

He did contribute the "I'm thinking about good vibrations, she's giving me excitations..." part of Good Vibrations but now, in interviews, he claims to have written the entire song. (The drugs destroyed his memory) He wrote SOME lyrics to part of a FEW of the songs but...no music whatsoever. He did not know how, and still does not know. I grew up with these guys and saw them in concert in the 60's and 70's and Mike was, is and always will be a douche bag.

this documentary is very good. the footage is limited at best and the camera man has no idea what he's doing. not worth the interruptions of 6 commercials in the first 35minutes.

Remember how stupid we all were back then. All we had was turntables and records. Most of us didn’t know about drugs and parental abuse. I remember going to. Beach Boys concert for $5 a ticket and we were all furious because they were two hours late. I get it now.

I love the original Beach Boys music. It’s so sad that Brian got so messed up on drugs that resulted in brain damage and depression all his life after that. No telling what great music he would have written if not for the drugs and depression.

the drugs he took for himself didnt mess him up as in brain damage, that was till landy took hold of him and drugged him up till it (actually) cooked his brain. Listen to interviews of him after his 2 year staying in bed depression and he sounds fine.

I am not a Mike fan, but he had to do that. First Murry Wilson screwed him out of the royalties, then Murry screwed Mike again and Brian too this time by selling the Beach Boys catalog out from under them for $700,000. In the early 1990s Brian was finally able to re-purchase the catalog for $10 million. At that time he said he was going to see to getting rectifying the situation with Mike's songwriting credits, but he never did. So five years later, Mike sued him. Mike said he co-wrote some 75 Beach Boys songs. The court determined that figure was more like 35 songs, and ruled in his favor.

He did not report to his local draft board on his scheduled date, and two weeks later he filed for conscientious objector status. He was eventually granted CO status, but he was convicted of draft evasion because of his two week delay in reporting. He was sentenced to three years of probation and community service.

Not really a movie, no script, no sets, just a lot of video footage, interviews, factoids across the screen and a few BB songs paired mostly with inappropriate footage. I love the Beach Boys, but this is really in poor taste.
