This is why ACOGs with a top mounted red dot are awesome still. You’re heads up with the red dot for close quarters engagements, but can get a cheek weld with the lower ACOG for shooting at distance

After like 30 years of trying things...we finally accept that the freakin A2 with an aimpoint is the cats meow. It's definitely comfortable.

DJ makes a good point, that yeah not having a cheek weld because you’re mount is high might not be the best for shooting, but its the best for maintaining situational awareness and being able to process information quickly. The situational awareness is what keeps you alive, not marginally better shooting.

As a firearms instructor myself, this may be the freshest, best rifle perspective I've heard in the last 5 years easily. Well done.

Can't thank these guys enough. Having been downrange, content like this just highlights how much higher of a level SF/SOF have been trained to. Whats old is new again. I used to be a closer to the bore for maximum efficiency of the optic in ranges. But with CQB we dont need that because we arent dialing. Love this stuff fellas. Keep it coming.

It's almost back to where it would be if we'd have kept the carry handle. Almost like Eugene knew what the hell he was doing. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

1.93" is simply the overall height of the mount and your RDS center line. So 1.93 inches from the pic rail to the dot in your optic... Then most uppers, from center of your bore to the top of the pic rail is 1.21. (all together a RDS on a 1.93 mount will be 3.14" TOTAL HIEGHT OVER BORE)

I was trained on the old high sights in tge 90s. But hunting practices and pressure of guides to shoot further and further git me trying to get as close to bore as possible. But this information is an eye opener for defensive situations. Thank you so much

Forgetting the KEY feature which is lower to bore = LESS delineation at different range targets. If you bore sight to 100m the difference ½-1½ inch in height can put your shots possibly 2-3 feet below a target at 200+ meters away. We need an optic that puts the aim line of sight closer to the bore and we can use mirrors to bring the aim point higher with your eyeball.

Would be cool to see a breakdown of different viable options to set the zero at for different heights.

Also noticed the optic at the front of the reciever vs back. Moving the red dot away from the eye allows for a wider field if vision.

If you go for this kind of setup you hopefully never end up in a situation where you have to get prone and fight an enemy who's shooting at you from 100+ yards away... It all depends on what kind of scenario you built your rifle for. Full co-witness or lower 1/3 co-witness to me is still the most versatile. I may loose a little bit of situational awareness but I can still blast somebody at 7 yards, but I can also take precise shots at 300 yards from prone without my head sticking out like a perfect target.

Heads up also opens up your ability to move naturally. It’s definitely a game changer for both handguns and rifle.

I think anyone who has any kind of training with any type of red dot gets trained day one on what offset they're dealing with whatever weapons system they have. I love the explanation of situational awareness with keeping your body upright in CQB environment.

I love the fact that the first Unit guys to use a red dot on top of a carry handle is about the same height as the new mounts high above the bore. We've come full circle and the original Unit guys were right in the early 90s!

I run an acog with a top mounted red dot. I chose it ultimately for when running a gas mask as I found a traditional height sight made for impossible head angles to see through. With an increased height I can use my red dot in a similar manner where I can just pull it up and look down the sight.

Was thinking about changing to a high rise mount. This video convinced me to complete the upgrade. I am a tall, large framed guy, and head down has always been a struggle for me. Excited that the industry is finally adopting the high mount setup.

Still feel like a lower third is the best for a combination of situational awareness, cheek weld, and hold overs. Maybe not the best at one particular thing but the best overall.

Should of mentioned that for operator's this is good information. But for people at home without body armor, night vision, or lasers those are made to see over, they don't need a sight that high to defend their home or have fun at the range. Most people aren't going to train enough to master it. Knowing your sight over bore is important information for sure.

This is great stuff, I learned this as an infantryman in the advanced rifle marksmanship instructor course at fort drum in 2014. But that was more than half way through my infantry career. Definitely should be teaching this down to the war fighter level.

Love these fundamentals! I’ve also noticed that there’s more of a stress response when you’re leaning forward verses standing straight up. And that has to factor into your technique in some ways. If not just that, I would also link it to just overall luck. I’m a firm believer that less stress equals more luck. In a gun fight, it could make the difference.

I run MP5 with original HK optic mount. I learned to love it for all the reasons you mentioned. also, makes it easier to use while wearing a gas mask.

It’s funny how when plates and armor first came out this was taught, early 2000s. Then it was wrong and we should blade off more like a fighting stance. Now we are back to this. What is old is new. What is new is old.

Every time I listen to DJ talk, he says something I never thought about because of situations I’ve never been in. Really have picked up a lot of useful information from GBRS.

I would rather have a lower height over bore than worrying about holds when split seconds matter.

Non verbal communication and spatial awareness are so vital in CQB! The only folks not on the “Height over bore” philosophy are those who have never shot from it while training CQB or room clearing.

This has always made sense to me especially with the interceptor body armor and if you were wearing a chest rig over it which creates this dead space if you will between your shoulder and the butt stock of a M4. Placement could be off when presenting the rifle from low or high ready if the mount height on the optic is low and the body would want to naturally lean forward and the head would want to tilt down to get that sight picture and if you wearing nods and your helmet tilted forward or the harness loosened up after hours of training your nods would hit the buffer tube when going through the shoot house.

For all you guys that mostly shoot an AR at 5-15 yards this is essential. I don’t know how we ever got by before this.

I have long features, neck, head. Low mounts are super uncomfortable for me. Rifles with a stock that's lower than the barrel have always been more comfortable for me to shoot. Rifles with the stock inline with the barrel like the ar15 I find myself crunching into. 1.93 and up mounts help me out a lot with that issue on ar15s.

It's disappointing, that trade-offs are not mentioned. For example, shooting over obstacle - either one you need to raise over or you use as cover. Also I wonder how shooting prone works with a very high mount. Usually you want to balance pros and cons for several contexts unless you are seeking tool for one particular situation.

A SWAT buddy of mine taught me to place the but-stock into my collarbone the same way. Took a little bit to get use to it, but now I am pretty comfortable and my isn't doesn't "bow".

Threw a riser under my Eotech and it completely changes the feel of the rifle.

I understand why height over bore is useful. If you are a gun fighter, an operator, tip of the spear, kicking doors, clearing rooms, taking fire, it makes perfect sense. For me in a home defense situation I think I will be ok with a low mount.

Question from a guy who's never done it.... If in a CQB situation where you would have to make a quick height over bore calculation, and the targets are already aware of your presence; why not just hit the vis laser at that point to make the shot?

You could build a 1.93-2.00 riser out of aluminum with a steel locking side for less than $10 bucks in material. Time and effort you'd be looking at $20-$30 bucks invested, charge $60-$75 and take over the market!!! Have you done this and I've only seen the night vision riser??

2 days ago I raised my red dot from 1.64” to 1.93”. Will shoot tomorrow to see if I like it more/less. The set up is for 100% upright shooting. Time will tell.

You're not the only prior TEAM guy in chat , so my opinion isn't based in ignorance and conjecture. I swear to God it's as if 99% of those that have ran a 1.93++, have never shouldered a rifle while kneeling, prone, etc. I think it looks Gucci, and I ran it fot s few classes, but I'm incapable of justifying a 2inch + mount, for that extremely niche CQB circumstance. You're handicapping yourself in literally every feasible aspect, excluding the one, 25yrds and in, ftf, cqb contact. At that point I'd prefer a pistol. This is a fad, that only excells in a single circumstance, for the sake of comfort. It's dumb, and within 5 years this fad will die. But hey, I'd totally take advantage of the market while I can as well, but you're grimy af for pretending that this is a preferred configuration.

I wasn’t going to put a 510c on my AK. Because of the height over bore with the rs regulate but this video changed my mind. I almost canceled my order for the optic mount. Thanks for this. I’d rather learn and understand height over bore and be able to get to my line of sight quicker.

I (a Desert Shield/Storm/Stay veteran) had an Aimpoint on my carry handle back in 2007, and the GWOT veterans were mocking me for my "stupid noob setup." But now that these guys say it's tacticool, everyone slurps all over their nads while thanking them for the awesome guidance. How about giving Larry Vickers (who did in 1989, Panama) the credit he deserves for doing it 23 years before these dudes.

I remember a time in the last 5-6 years when lower HOB was the thing and no one on the internet could tell you different. Look where we are now.

Just got me a Scalarworks 1.93 inch mount for my cheapo Slx-25 and pvs-7 300blk poor man's setup. Boy night and day I feel very confident about passive shooting now.

The transition from rifle to pistol and already being in position for speed is something that only those same elite CQBers would be concerned about. How much time does it really take to come up to pistol position? Enough to get killed, apparently. I'm a former deputy sheriff, and I've cleared many structures, but I never had a gunfight in a hallway or in a room I just entered. I've never actually experienced that drag race, at the Christmas Tree, MUST be off the line first or it's lights out and a couple thousandths of a second can be the margin. These guys did that over and over, every single day, and did it with the grace and smoothness of ballet, rather than an armed bull in a Chinese shop.

From a competitive shooter perspective, I want a dot as low as possible on my rifle. To each their own…

I'm no operator but it's just more comfortable to keep my head up and I can deploy my irons through the riser.

I am so much smarter than I was a few minutes ago. I have a few adjustments to make to my rifles and some fun new practice to look forward to. Thanks Guys.

Sky scraper mounts may work well for swat and SOF guys doing alot of DA and HR but for the average armed civilian the lower 3rd is still best imo.
