Abbott recently announced a number of important upgrades to their FreeStyle Libre CGM system. These will impact users of FreeStyle Libre 2, FreeStyle Libre 3 and those of you who are considering to use continuous glucose monitor along with an insulin pump, such as Tandem or Omnipod, to create a closed loop and benefit from automated insulin delivery.

Thanks for your videos ! The Libre system is what helped me to go into Diabetes type 2 into remission. I was diagnosed type 2 in August 2019 with an A1C of 11.9, I was put on a few diabetic medications which helped, then Endo switched to a combo medication which landed me in ER severely dehydrated with ECG changes, so I was told to stop those and given back the original ones, I changed my diet ended my nursing career while on sick leave since Oct 1st 2020, retired March 2020 (applied in Nov 2019). In January 2020 I switched my diet drastically and by end March 2020 my A1c was down to 6.5 %, by end of may my A1C was 5.8 %, all diabetic medications were stopped and I manage with diet alone since may 28th 2020. I wear a Libre which helps see my numbers in real time and if my numbers are higher change portion if still high eliminate the food in question. Now my A1C is hovering around 6.3 % but my Cortisol levels are elevated as I have autoimmune diseases, so as long as I remain below 6.5 % they will not treat the diabetes as for over 30 yrs I was known for reactive hypoglycemia and while on diabetic medications I had many hypos hence wearing a Libre, having both hypoglycemia and diabetes is tricky so a CGM reallyhelps a lot. Apparently the reactive hypoglycemia condition since my 20's is now known as pre diabetes and our A1C might only be treated at 7.0 % as I still get hypos while off medications. But any new diabetic can use a CGM and know more how their diabetes works. I hjave 18 diseases with no cure, hence a lot of inflammation hence A1C might be higher due to these inflammatory diseases. CGM have saved my life many times, the Libre 2 wakes me up at night when I go hypo. Diabetes remission is possible if at early stages of diagnosis, there is no cure, there is no reversal, but remission is considered when you are at least 6 months off diabetic medications and A1C below 6.5 %, but even if in remission, as with my other diseases, you can still have moments were the numbers go up, in my case autoimmune diseases is what causes this.

Unless you’ve fried the beta cells in your pancreas there’s absolute no truth to the assertion that T2DM isn’t, “reversible” or “curable” it’s merely insulin resistance and it may take YEARS to undo the maladaptation that created your insulin sensitivity. It’s not as if you’ve blown some fuse that can’t be replaced. The issue is many won’t reverse the condition because it’s hard work to change long established patterns your reptile brain encourages you to engage in like shoveling carbs and sugar down your gullet.

Just for the record, the Eversense CGM lasts for 6 months, though it's implanted and not really in the same ballpark as the others you compared. I did try earlier Libre CGM and had a skin reaction to their adhesive; I'm not sure if that's changed for the better, though you say you had issues with adhesion. I envy you for having access to Ypsomed; they bought a US-based infusion set manufacturer and moved production of the Orbit infusion sets. As a result, we can't get them here anymore. I LOVED those Orbit Micro sets, 31G steel sets that rotated... awesome.

I use Libre 3, my choice as I pay for mine out of my own pocket in the US bc insurance does not cover. I do agree that being able to adjust how frequently it pings the phone would be helpful. 3 does allow me to silence alarms and I have had no problems with adhesive using Skin Tac and an alternative sight. My arms are very dry, and that causes adhesive problems, so switching sites solved that.

Thanks for the informative video! I quit using the FreeStyle Libre because the app does not allow you to mute the low glucose alarm. Several times I rolled over during the night and had the sensor fail on me which resulted in waking up to a screeching low glucose alarm (wifey was also not pleased with waking up to the alarm). When I get the low glucose alarm, the sensor is broken and does not start working again (perhaps the capillary is getting bent?). I've also caused the same failure by accidently scraping the sensor against a door jam. Anyway, the CGMs are quite fragile and never last more than a week for me. I tried to get an adhesive patch to protect them, but the one I tried gave me a severe allergic reaction to the adhesive. I'm hoping the technology will improve, or maybe I can find a better place to attach the CGM other than the back of my arm...

Thanks for all that you share! You note that you prefer to put a cover over the sensor, to reduce the likelihood of the sensor falling off/ being knocked off. I wonder, in Abbott's materials I think regarding clothing to wear with/over the sensor I came across a completely unexplained aside mention of "to let it breathe". Have you been able to learn whether in fact the sensor NEEDS "to breathe", to not be covered air-tight, etc? Or was that just a poorly worded way of the Abbott documentation emphasizing that tight clothing may make it more likely that the sensor would get tugged off sometimes (but, actually, "air" and "breathing" have nothing to do with it)? thanks!

15 days is not a huge improvement. I’d prefer to change them on the same day of the week and so prefer 14 days. If they improved them to 21 days, that would be a huge upgrade. Also, retrieving readings every minute is a HUGE battery drain on the phone. I’d prefer to be able to choose the interval manually. And I also want to be able to silence alarms. They can be very disruptive. The app doesn’t allow for manual override.

And the adhesive sucks…the Libre 3 severely blisters my daughter’s arm. The Libre 3s were all inaccurate too. The Dexcom accuracy blows the Libre 3 out of the water. The Libre was sometimes as much as 100 points off. She tried six of the Libre 3. Dexcom is nearly always spot on with the readings with her Contour Next One and Vario Reflect. The Dexcom calibration is a nice feature too, although she has rarely needed it. The Dexcom has never caused a skin reaction either.

Sensor 3 phone app does not have a separate finger stick data item like previous versions of the phone app. I agree it would be nice to be able to custom calibrate the sensor to finger sticks. My experience with sensor 3 is it is always reading high and especially on the high end of a spike it can be 20-30% higher than a finger stick. I use the CGM to discover what foods give me a big spike.

I have found a couple of things that help with FSL2 accuracy, one is placement, I would recommend placing the FSL2 on your chest/pec area. It gives more stable and accurate readings, stays on better, and I find it easier to apply/scan. I would also recommend applying each FSL2 for 24 or 48 hours before scanning them for the first time starting them running, this helps with your inflammatory response that can bugger up your reading. Hope this helps.

I would recommend placing the FSL2 on your chest/pec area. It gives more stable and accurate readings, stays on better, and I find it easier to apply/scan. I still might get the dreaded 10min warning but only if I have a really long hot shower.

Ever get the dreaded "check again in 10 hours"? It doesn't happen often, usually if I scan in a new sensor right after putting it on, I usually put my sensor on a day early so it has time to "marinate" properly, lol!

Three - out of the last six Freestyle Libre 3 sensors I have used FAILED, all with the same symptom. They read low during the first ten days of use and then suddenly showed a constant 54 mg/dL with that awful, unstoppable alarm. I turned off Bluetooth while I slept and 9 hours later it was still reading 54 after I ate. My finger stick was 108 before eating and 176 after breakfast and still 54-60 on the sensor. Abbott sent replacements for all three so far, but don't seem to have a path to recording the fact that there appears to be a QA problem. Customer service said they have no way to report multiple failures per user. I hope that when I am sending them back they see a pattern. All three sensors that failed had no error message.

You sent them back? Any time I had a bad sensor they just send a new one. I'm curious what type of proof they ask you for when you claimed the sensor was faulty (screenshots, video?). Whenever I have a faulty sensor I just say I knocked it off and they send a new one. Makes things easier.

Juggluco. I've used it for a few years which allows me to see my bg in my notification bar as well as on my AOD but best seen using the app on my galaxy watch 4. Have my bg on my wrist 100% of the day. You have to side load it to both your phone and watch as its not in the play store (was a couple years ago, no longer tho). Worth a look into. Search it on Google. I can't imagine not having my bg on my wrist at all times of the day.

The real time connection on the Libre 2 is very problematic. It's not just an Android or iOs issue as the sensor tends to lose connection from Bluetooth frequently, leading to signal loss alarms. The recommended solution from Abbot about cycling your Bluetooth or powering your phone off and on simply doesn't work to resolve and is only a temp measure . They have a major bug in their software

Well, I'd like to see more choices on the alarm sounds too, so that just by sound we can tell the difference between the different alarm warnings. Abbott still seems a bit slow to get these upgrades out. For it didn't take much to extend the sensor by one day, or to make the phone app so that you didn't have to scan the sensor. What I'd really like to see is a reader that speaks! I am blind, and would love to see the Libre reader speak out the readings. Talking technology is everywhere now, so why did Abbott overlook this? Inexcusable in my opinion.

Really? What FSL are you having problems with 1,2 or 3. What issues are you having? Yea, the helpline is... Well it feels like you are talking to a brand new employee that hasn't a clue what the company does. I have had a few bleeders but maybe 1 out of 30 might bleed. Not sure if it will help in your case but I highly recommend placing the FSL2 on your chest/pec area. It gives more stable and accurate readings, stays on better, and I find it easier to apply/scan. Also, apply but do not start each FSL sensor for 24-48 hours before you need it, this helps with inflammation issues that can bugger up readings.

@@jimbarbwe1985 I'm using the Libre. The problem is usually the sensor won't get past the start up process, once the 60 minutes has passed and I try to scan instead of giving me a reading it just begins the the star up process all over again and I eventually have to replace the sensor. The other common issue is that it will just stop reading the sensor sometime into the 14 days of wearing it. Your idea of placing sensor on my chest is a non starter as mine is like an Amazon rainforest, but I appreciate your input! 👍

I use the FSL3 and love it. I like 14 day wear times as I always change on Saturday which is most convenient for me. It's imperative to soak the sensor 24 hours before activating. I start the sensor with Libre software and then force quit the software and switch to Juggluco and use the associated app to connect to my Garmin Watch AND AAPS. It's been a game changer. All open source. Unfortunately, I live in the US AND have insurance but have to pay for my own CGMs...FSL3s are expensive but cheaper than the rest. Try other software if the Libre doesn't work for you. I'm using Android of course for AAPS. Another game changer for me.
