I tried most popular alcoholic drinks to see how they impact my blood sugar. If you live with diabetes and would like to know what drink to have and/or if it's even OK to drink alcohol as a diabetic this might be an interesting video for you to watch. It will help you decide what alcoholic drink to order and what else to do next time you find yourself in a bar.

This video was really challenging to make for me. As I was testing these alcoholic beverages, I was constantly asking myself if I'm doing the right thing... Although I drunk a lot of alcohol when I was younger, a couple years ago I almost practically eliminated alcohol from my life. I felt during this experiment I went back to drinking more than my body can handle in the long term. So I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal which in my case is drinking less and only on very special occasions (if at all). If you liked this video watch this one next (I'm sure you will love it): The Best Fruit for Diabetes kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zpxlg9Gc16_eiIU.htmlsi=2HMglfUrGkeHMxu1 Blood Sugar Academy - Register your interest here forms.gle/WAxjUdbtxSPExCCj6 Join my Patreon community (direct access to me & access to bonus content) www.patreon.com/typeonetalks Book a private session with me calendly.com/typeonetalks

I haven’t had alcohol in eight / ten years. I just stopped one day, after my son was born in 1982 I stopped completely for about five years then I would have a glass or two of wine and a beer with tacos or pizza. Then I found out I was serious diabetic, my blood sugar rollercoasters real lows (45) then up to 400, my body feels comfortable around 200/250 I wear the sensor and watch what I eat, I have lost 35 pounds, but the rollercoaster still runs, I wake up to 400’s or dropping to 40’s 50’s or what ever I was in the hospital lately and they call codes on me about six times, I coded myself at home at least four times in a month!

Denial, defiance, and depression are all powerful things, and I think we all go through them at one time or another when we live with diabetes. I've lived with the disease for almost 50 years, and can say that my behavior in college verged on suicidal...drinking and doing drugs were dangerous behaviors, and I'm lucky to have survived without complications. Like you, learning the effects of drinking took me time and testing, which was much easier since CGMs became available (they were not when I was in college).

@@CC-km8gt @melaniestout2929 Any normal DRY 12-15% alcolohol red works for me. I buy in the 10-30 dollar range. I tend towards Pinot Noir, and Cabernets. Regular white wines occassionally spike my blood sugar, but not too often. I stay away from mojitos and chardonnay... anything bubbly is going to be rough. Each person is different, I think. I drink at home with a Sugar Pixel in my face. Be careful out on the town.

Howdy Tom!👋🤓 Your title did get my attention! 😁 When I was in my twenties and early thirties, I drank mostly rum and Cokes and wine coolers ( mostly when I went clubbing). Then diabetes hit me like a ton of bricks....I was 32 at the time. I remained in denial for a few years after, and screwed up my body even more...😮. I'm now sixty years old and finally decided to change my diet to the Nutritarian way of eating. I've struggled with this disease for most of my life due to eating the worst diet....the American fast food and highly processed foods...🙁 I'm now on the slow road to reduce the pharmacy of drugs I'm on, nearly lost my eyesight ( was saved from that, due to my Retinologists' intervention), and having to retrain my taste buds to love natural foods. I truly hope no one has to go through my experience...I've lost out on so much in my life. It's like starting all over again....enjoyed your content! "Cheers" 🍸🍷🍹☕🍵 😂🤗

If you're type 1 and want to drink the best choice, I've found, is light beer. For me the amount of carbs typically balanced the shutting off the glucose production of your liver as it works to take care of the liquor. I used to drink quite heavily in college and when i kept it to light beer my bloodsugars held just about steady and didn't drop too much during the night either. Might have helped that those were not sitting parties either, but dancing, walking around the area, etc. Mixed drinks with non-sugar soda (rum and diet, vodka and diet etc) could be tricky as my bloodsugar would drop too much later on. But I'm with you on that looking back...not sure if I would drink quite as much as I did. Andrew Huberman's podcast on alcohol changed my life. I never knew how much alcohol messes up your body, and just as importantly, your BRAIN. I am an academic, and I can't help but wonder how much better I would be, how much stronger my memory would be, if I'd drank less (I did not really ever get blackout drunk, but did have a night or two a week that were really fun). It also just DECIMATES your gut and now I am spending a lot of time trying to fix those issues. Our culture pushes alcohol so hard - every fun activity, even sports, is linked with drinking. I used to play ultimate frisbee, so even moreso there actually. But it is a LIE. You can totally have fun with out alcohol, and its unnecessary in most cases. When I first started cutting back this year I felt a little sad and like I would never enjoy things the way I did previously with a drink in hand, and people would not want to hang out with me anymore if we weren't drinking together. But over a few months of cutting back from 5-6 drinks a week to 2, to 1, to only on occasion, I've found I'm missing it less and less. I don't think there is anything wrong with people who choose the path to have a drink more than I do, but I just don't feel like I'm missing out any more and its stopped being at all difficult to sip on a water or something else with them instead of having a drink in hand. No one cares, neither do I, and my social life is proceeding as it was previously, but now I am healthier (and don't lose any time to hangovers either!). I am also encouraged by the increase in numbers of mocktails being served at many restaurants, so you can have a treat without the literal poison (albeit low-grade) in it. The prevalence of those also suggests that many others are choosing this path as well. So if you're thinking about it, I say go for it - give it a few months, allow yourself an occasional drink on special occasions, but overall pull back and just see how you feel - it will probably surprise you as it did me :)

I ALWAYS stay away from any sweet drinks and never use the artificial sweeteners. My go to alcoholic drink is Coke Zero & whiskey. A beer from time to time and wine on occasion. Gin & Tonic was my choice in my “younger” stupid bar days. I had no idea Tonic had a lot of sugar in it. I now sometimes have Gin & DIET Tonic! All the best to those with Type 1. I always say I have this so I take better care of my health than those that are not diabetic. 😊

I got told in 1984 when I was diagnosed that alcohol has a lowering effect on blood sugar cus it stops the carbs being absorbed so less glucose going in to the blood stream. They even said if you have say 2 pints of lager then eat a bag of crisps. But I found this happens the morning after, or as you put a few hours later. I cud reduce the insulin used by 50% the next morning. Back then there was no cgm so it was often a bit precarious. With the libre 2 I have now its not a problem.

I have been Type 1 since 1996. I have been professionally brewing beer since 2009. There are many beers that have zero g of carbs. They also have calories from the alchol, but don't spike blood sugar. Beers like true Belgian saisons or wild fermented beers that are fermented dry. Same with traditional cider that is wild fermented also zero g of carbs. Drinking any alchol in heavy amounts will crash your blood sugar. Always in moderation and always with food. There is a reason late night kebab shops are busy for none diabetics! Also a reason why everyone feels better after a breakfast and glass of orange juice come morning 😂😂 Stay healthy and keep social as sitting worrying your life away is also not healthy for the head. Our son is type 1 and the endocrinologists said he should absolutely eat fresh fruits. BUT to be careful with the fruits as they do affect the BG differently. Berries are a big staple in our house but we measure with a scale to get a more accurate carb count and bolus a little more accurately.

Thank you very much! Knowing what you've detailed is very useful for my health in general, especially the drop hours later, but also about carbs/sweet drinks. I'm not diabetic, but don't want to spike my glucose as it is associated with a host of long term negative effects. I also enjoy alcohol, but manage my tolerance by only sipping half an ounce of spirits each hour or so in the evenings. I'm glad this habit I've grown into as I'm getting older is, at least, less harmful (than what I used to do)!

Allulose is the BEST alternative sweetener for taste, blood spike, and mouth feel. But I also find pure stevia is fine for sweetening sour drinks... it may be the most practical to bring along to the bar.

Thanx for the video. I dont like Coke zero. I prefer whiskey+ice+soda Water. I tested with my glucose measurement device then I decided that whiskey is most better

Thanks for the video. My default drink has always been water, and when I do consume alcoholic drinks, it usually takes me more than an hour to finish one. I rarely drink two or more liquids to consume. I do drink various whiskeys, but I don't like drinking past 2 ounces in an 8 hour period or even for a whole day. What I do think is dangerous to drink is any fruity beverage or anything with high sugar content.

39 years T1 and other than a couple fingers of Glenfiddich - neat - my favorite drink is a Cuba Flaca - dark rum and Diet Coke. Works every time. Sailor Jerry's is my favorite.

I found that taking whiskey or scotch neat, on the rocks, or with a splash of club soda is enjoyable and doesn't spike me. I also enjoy Cognac, but only from time to time.

Very informative. Many (most?) do not know that alcohol can cause significant drops in blood sugar. I drink beer, on occasion, but most times only one. My drink of choice now is Canadian Rye (yup, I'm a Canuck) with just water. I find that ice alters the taste.

I'm a LADA diabetic and have pretty much given up alcohol and sugary beverages with special occasions being the exception (birthdays, wedding anniversary, etc.). But even then, I limit myself to one drink. That said, the toughest beverage to give up was orange juice. Though I do keep it in the fridge for whenever my blood sugar is significantly low.

Very informative. Thank you! I never drank beer for years, then I started about 10 years ago, I guess I'll have to go back to my Canadian Club on the rocks or with diet ginger ale.

As a physician, I’m impressed with your testing procedures. If you really want to get control over type 2, test this: drink a cup of mugwort tea mornings and evenings for 3 weeks and watch your glucose levels level, then stabilize. I’ve been getting successful results with type 2 patients for years using Mugwort leaf (Artemisia vulgaris) in this fashion, watching diet simultaneously, of course; like eating from the green bowl.

I am Type 2 and wear a CGM. I have noticed that most wines (including sweeter dry wines like Riesling) don't impact my blood sugar. Straight hard liquors like whiskey similarly don't cause a glucose rise. My favorite mixed drinks that don't impact my blood sugar are bloody mary, traditional gin martinis, and rum & diet coke. My wife and I have even gone on a couple of cruises where I was able to drink basically as much as I wanted so long as I stayed hydrated and ate properly.

Thanks for the info. I really enjoyed your presentation. I'm not diabetic, over 70 and do like a scotch, a Tanqueray, a beer or margarita now and then. I only drink with dinner. I get the short Corona's, I drink my scotch with ice in a small glass , Tanqueray with 2 olives, and I like white sweet wine. I guess I should stick with the scotch. It would be interesting to test the effects on my own blood sugar.

My go to drink has got to be gin, club soda and lemon juice. I haven't been able to find out if there's an existing name for it on the internet, I just call it a dry gin sour, because it basically tells you what it is right in the name. I said "gin, soda, lemon" at a bar and the bartender made it exactly right, no questions.

Very good and very accurate account. Dark rum is known to bring blood glucose down quickly. I turn off my pump on a good night of drinking especially when I go to bed afterwards. Set your alarm on 200 and then turn the pump on if you ever get that high before you wake up or set-up temporary basal with a higher than normal range to avoid pumping when trending low. Can't say for anyone but works for me. Water is your best friend. Add some celtic salt to it, that is your electrolyte. Prepare your water before you get drunk lol. I SWORE NEVER TO USE CARBS TO CORRECT so I need to be extra careful (dirty carnivore here). I rely on my liver to correct my lows lol. I use milk thistle before drinking, dont know if it helps or not but, so far so good . T1D for 32 years.
