Ha ha, I am not sure as to which enemy you are referring but I agree completely. I do often wonder who gives some of the instructors on this channel thumbs down, there is some amazing content on here that should be seen far and wide. Thanks for watching and commenting, I am glad you enjoyed it!

i love this guy, for people who are mostly Thai boxing with other arts mixed in like myself i found that if you throw a Brazilian kick ( question mark kick or sanchai kick) before a hook kick they pull back to slip the brazilian and walk right into a hook, this may work with other styles i just don't know how prevalent head pulls are in those styles

I am a big believer in styles are not as important as the individual. If an athlete/martial artist is taught well and has the necessary will power, work ethic and determination he will do well. Styles can of course make a huge impact dependent on the rules you engage in i.e. a TKD athlete tends not to fare well in a Muay Thai bout but as we see with MMA, these can be countered and worked against when the rules are more open. I love all Martial arts that are done well! Thanks for making a great comment and I am glad you enjoyed it

You are more than welcome for the content, it is my pleasure as always! The hook kick is an underused tool within the MMA arena and I agree completely with what you said, someone is going to end up on a KO highlight reel when one of these does land home properly ha ha

These sort of techniques catch a lot of people of guard as they are difficult to spot when thrown as well as this. I know as I remember sparring with Jamie about 15 years ago and he caught with me this exact same rear leg hook kick ha ha. Thanks for watching and commenting, I am glad you enjoyed it!

this is by far the least utilized and most effective kick in kickboxing/ mma. i dont like the front leg hook kick because it has much less power but this one if done correctly can do some real damage and is nearly unblockable since it looks like a roundhouse to the defender and switches sides. great tutorial

This is the sort of Karate I wished I'd done for 8years... Still, Practising the hook kick against the air for so many years does have some benefits and I still hit it in MMA very often and the fright it gives your opponent in sparring when they realise you could have pelted them with your heel xD So easy to set it up with the roundhouse kicks to the thigh that are so prevalent in MMA.

Swe Kiwi For me I gained the flexibility from doing the karate for so many years and I didn't really notice what a feat my flexibility actually was until I left the karate club for MMA! I just had a read of this article and it seems pretty legit so I'd give this a go: www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89245

Swe Kiwi Here's a quote from someone else too and I actually do recall doing this myself: "One of my favorite exercises in that area is holding a side kick against the wall. You execute a side kick with your foot against the wall, and then you shift your weight forward until your foot no longer slides down. This will only work if you hold your leg at least in a horizontal line. Once you have some balance you can work on height. If you get your foot to face level without losing balance and while maintaining a proper side kick position you will have greatly improved both power and balance. Note: in the beginning you may be tempted to hold on to something for support. Don't. It'll spoil the whole exercise." Side kicks to the knee or face are also brutally effective in MMA against aggressive boxers that you can bait in.

The Freestyle karate scene (inc light continuous kickboxing etc) is definitely a strong one within the UK. A lot of people can sometimes have the misconception that it is just for semi contact but actually the foremost practitioners are able to implement it just as effectively within the full contact arena. A prime example is Michael 'Venom' Page who is currently rising to the top within Bellator. Glad you enjoyed watching it!

I know your working that for sports karate but could you do a fallow up for similar techniques for mma?? Like as you throw the kick and they go for the level change, I know timing is important but with the speed of changing the kick could you shut them down??
@warriorcollective
@warriorcollective 8 жыл бұрын
We actually filmed this from the point of view that it could easily be adapted into full contact or MMA style rule sets (hence the low kick into hook kick variation). I am not sure how easy it would be to utilise this in the manner you describe but I know for sure that it would work well in the striking exchanges. Keep watching for more videos and you may see something similar to what you are looking for!! Thanks for watching and commenting!

That's where being unpredictable comes in. Throw a long knee if you're tall instead of the hook kick sometimes and obviously throw roundhouse kicks to the thigh most of the time . Set 'em all up with punches. Then you can start feinting with the leg kick predicting the level change retract your leg before throwing the kick and planting it in the ground while you try to get double underhooks on their shoulders and move your hips back . The key with this kick is obviously not to throw it from too close a range as is true with any kick that aims at the head since they naturally off-balance you a lot more and generally take longer to execute.

This is good..but I wonder why the hook kick not being used more in MMA. Is it because most fighters does not have that traditional background, or the striking coaches are more Mauy Thai (kick boxing) background. Or perhaps they are are just not that flexible?

I have been asked this on a number of occasions so I recently filmed a short series of videos covering just this subject with an excellent Yoga instructor in the form of Zoe Macphail. Here is the link to 1st one which focuses on the warm up i.e. prior to training or before a more comprehensive stretching routine. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ldShfLedksWwqps.html The next one to be released will be on hip flexibility and gaining high kicks! Hope this helps!
