Thanks for doing such a good job at showing how this system ACTUALLY works. I watched another review of this product and all the person did was swap filters. God bless!

I expected image quality tests with charts and stuff as with lens reviews. Would've been really helpful.

I did that in quick form by comparing results with the filter attached and without it attached.

Hi Dustin, is it possible to use the magnetic VND without the base filter? I want the ability to take off the VND and not have another filter below it. What has been your solution for this? Or have you seen another brand that enables this? Thank you!
@DustinAbbottTWI

The short answer is yes. There is a magnetic adapter that goes on, so you don't have to use a filter beneath.

I just received mine a few days ago in 95mm to work on Canon DF 28-70mm f/2. The system works pretty great in general. I believe this is the future of circular filter systems. But I did have an issue with the VNDXMIST on the Canon 85mm f/1.2. It was completely out of focus and the images were just blurry shots with this combo. Freewell says this may happen with certain longer glass. I will note that I tried the VNDXMIST on my RF 70-200mm f/2.8 and while there was a little softness @ 200mm, completely useable. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Hmmm, that's an interesting issue.

Is it possible to combine the two nd filters on top of each other?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. It depends on the lens (filter stacking can introduce mechanical vignetting with some wide angle lenses), and sometimes that polarization from multiple ND filters can reduce image quality.

Dustin, thanks for the great review. Can you put the regular Freewell magnetic ND filters on top of one of these variable filters? I am thinking of switching to the Freewell system for long exposure photography. At sunset, the light changes quickly, so the variable ND filters would allow some needed flexibility very quickly. Is there a downside to using variable NDs like that?

hi William, Freewell doesn't recommend the stacking, but it seems like mostly to prevent introducing vignette. With many lenses this won't be an issue, however. Mostly very wide angle lenses could potentially have an issue with vignette.

Mr. Abbott, I am hoping you can answer my query below and thanks in advance. I am a newbie to the ND filter application and have yet to spend more time to research and educate myself in this subject. I took a closer look at my lens collection to confirm that the largest front filter threads is 82mm. Does it mean if I order the 82mm base thread on the subject Freewell VND kit which will give me the coverage from 52 to 82mm using step up adapter rings? Or am I totally out of whack as it is becoming impractical? Or should I simply go all the way to 95mm base thread?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
No, Steve, you've got it perfectly right. If 82mm fits your largest filter size, then buy that one and use step up rings.
