From baby boomers to millennials, some people have found a road map to happiness by living their lives on the open road, in RVs or converted vans. Bob Wells inspired me to get out of my misery and see the world, His videos gave me the strength to take action! It was the best thing I ever did three years ago after my husband of 47 years passed. I've been on the road since 2015 and camped with Bob Wells my first few months. I owe my independence and sustained health to him and this lifestyle. I have a traumatic brain injury and was told that I might see 2016, but would not know it. My Trustee took me to lunch and said, “If there was ever a time to do a bucket list, it is now.” That was when another friend introduced me to Bob Wells in 2015, and he took me under his wing, taught me the ropes and I am forever indebted and grateful to all my earth angels for each day I have been blessed to enjoy since then and moving forward. Thank you too to this reporter for not portraying us negatively as so many often do. I had a longtime state career, a 3/2 home, retirement plans, investments, 2 dogs & a cat, a new car every year, etc etc etc, and have never been happier than I am now. It is correct that it is not easy, but it is a good life. KOKO! I’ll see you down the road everybody.

Sonny, Could not have said it better. Have the van in my sights, affordable and ready to go, but it seems like best friends, whom I love dearly and have been helping me while I'm on a low income housing waiting list, think it's best for me to live in an old folks community. These is great for some , but not for me. I need to keep moving or I will stop to exist. Its already started happening. Why won't they say, "okay, this is really what you want, how can we help and support you in accomplishing your dream?" They truly believe their way is the best for me, but it's not. They know I need a little support following my dream, but they seem to be determined to undermined my dream. They don't think I'm capable of doing this. I would rather die trying instead of just existing and for me living in a stationary box will be the end. I live in Easley, SC and If there are van dwellers near by I could use someone to talk with. TIA!

@J G Well their generation created it, they should benefit from it. There's no one to thank for the decimation of SS but the administrations (Dem and Rep) that illegally used it's deposits for other purposes, and the folks that allowed them = the rest of us. Those same folks have created a Health Care monopoly and Stock Market engineered to force as many people as possible to work and pay taxes until their last days. That's a big reason for the Vagabond movement. Not even those with SS and a pension can afford (maintenance, insurance and taxes), let alone live out their lives comfortably in, their own (paid for) homes. Change will take hard work and tough decisions, are you up?

I come from a background of pioneers that crossed the plains. They lived simple lives and were very happy. As a Society we have over complicated our lives with stuff. Just because some are going back to a simpler life and choosing a different kind of house. Doesn't mean that we are poor. Taking a lifestyle and having a choice is the American Dream. I work that normal 9-5 job but I want to live simple. I want to live were I am happy. Thank you Bob for having the courage to be a nomad. I'll first spend time with my terminal sister then take my time crossing America meeting people who all have a story to tell. I want to show what the fiber of America is. I hope to often do community service for those I meet along the way, mostly the forgotten seniors. One thing I'd like to do is help them with food storage. Making sure they have food and it's organized in a way they can use it. Like freezer meals, etc.. They often don't eat healthy, either because of finances or the ability to take care of themselves and there's no one to help. Another thing, I love decorating and creating. I'd like to meet those mothers who need help decorating or need an extra hand canning or starting or organizing a food storage. Please follow me on my journey and let me know if I should make your town one of my stops. And recommend someone in need. Right now I'm learning how to do videos and edit as I also get ready to put my home on the market. But hold on. The best is yet to come.

I'm an intermittent nomad in a van. When I head out I'm not driving away from something I reject. I'm driving towards something I desire, that is to see and experience more of this beautiful land of ours, to meet so many different wonderful fellow travelers and world citizens, to paint the wonderful scenes, to further grow my spirit When I am in my stix and brix home---actually a mobile home, I love it and I grow my spirit there as well, I do many of the same things there that I do on the road; I take long hikes in our local mountains, walks along the creek in my back yard, I paint, cook. I wash my dishes with a minimum of water, take sponge baths between showers, wear a minimal selection of clothing, much as I do on the road. I get a bit tired of hearing the constant drumbeat that the alternate life style is one of rejecting the mainstream life style. For me it's just another choice I can make in my life. I think my intermittent times of several months on the road averaging 45% of the year will eventually become full time, as I am moving towards renting my house out. However, when that time comes I will have a 12x16 storage shed converted to an art studio to return to on my own land from time to time as yet another choice available to me. It's about options for me, not rejection.

Being "connected" has transformed the 9-5 into the 24-7. You're expected to answer email and texts 24 hours a day. Yet your pay doesn't increase. It's not worth it anymore.

@RaFari1119 Bee That is a fair point, Van's do have their costs. They cost thousands of dollars to begin with, and if you buy a cheaper one you will have to work on it. Plus gas. But it's still cheaper than paying rent, and if you dont move your van gas isnt as big of an issue. I have a dirtbike that mounts to the back of my van, so gas isnt as big of an issue. I live out of my van on occasion, as a tool to save up money. Once every year or two when my lease is up I live out of my van and save all the money I would be spending on rent and bills, works out well. I do still have a job, but when I quit a job I quit working for months at a time. My complaints of van life would be this: 1) Living out of your vehicle gets old after a while, you start to miss technology and basic comforts. If your single, you get lonely. 2) Showers and pooping 3) Driving such a large vehicle that doesnt fit in a parking garage. Even going to the grocery store can be a major headache.

Bob has helped my family and I have the courage to go out there an experience life. The daily 9-5 is miserable for us. Having a shower is obviously important but not as important as you'd think. We have a shower and only wish to use it occasionally. Wouldn't you trade a recliner and shower for epic views, amazing community, and adventure? I love how vanlifers and RVers say that security is an illusion, Bob is trying to break those illusions for people in most gentle way. The drama, racism, insecurity, our feelings of lack when we truly have everything we'd EVER need, the judgement, boredom, substance abuse, and constant consumption. I'm glad I ran into his videos. He's an amazing person who helps millions of ppl. This guy interviewing him really needed to protect his lifestyle by insulting a guy who's more successful than him by being 100% authentic. No one needs to defend Bob though, he did great.

Unfortunately, the state of California is cracking down on RV and van life living. Due to "perception" cities like LA, SF and San Diego are making it illegal to camp overnight in your car, van or RV. The rich neighborhoods contacted their local city council members to ban it because they got tired of endless vans living near the beach and making a "mess". They are over-generalizing the few bad ones for the entire community. I saw this coming years ago. Now if you look on the streets you'll see signs with height restrictions, banning tents, etc etc. It's a shame to live in the "most progressive state".

The funny thing is, the "non homeless people" that live in houses and apartments are just as quilty of being litter bugs. I see it all the time. They come to the beach towns to visit from other surrounding towns, and leave trash in the parking lots (even when there are a ton of trash cans around), used condoms, dirty diapers, cigarette butts, beer bottles, fast food trash...ect...but they try to make all the vehicle dwellers the scapegoat. Whipping your john out and peeing where you want (even though there are bathrooms at the beach) is just as bad as a pee bottle...they are both to be disposed in a toliet. There are trashy people in all walks of life...even the ones that can afford to have beach property.

What Bob doesn't understand is that the increase of people living his lifestyle is destroying his lifestyle. Boondocking locations is becoming more difficult to find and even RV parks are full, especially in popular areas. Even Walmart is closing some of its store locations to overnighting. What happens when boondocking locations become rare and RV parks keep raising fees because of a shortage of spaces?
@IndigenousPathways
@IndigenousPathways 5 жыл бұрын
TheFiscallySound I agree with you...somewhat. The easier boondocking locations that are (1) most immediate and closest to towns/cities, (2) offer WiFi/cell coverage and (3) do not require a 4WD and/or high clearance vehicle to get to will be the first areas that become overrun and negatively impacted by the growing numbers of nomadic folks. However many people who live the van lifestyle do not have the financial resources to buy and maintain specialized 4WD vehicles with campers. The areas that require a specialized vehicle to enter will mostly remain free of van-dwellers. Even following all the laws, this lifestyle still necessitates a certain amount of anonymity. The greater amount of press and news coverage will lead to a greater amount of scrutiny by local and eventually government officials. My fear is that increased use and any abuse of our federal lands might lead the BLM/National Forest management to increase fees and limit the amount of days per stay/year.

When I got a divorce in 93, I worked and moved around from apartment to apartment for two years until I decided to get rid of most of the things I had through my daughters and the Salvation Army and move into a used 35 ft travel trailer. I lived in that trailer for 4 years until I sold it and moved into one of my offices in the building I owned for my company. People told me to buy a house and I said I did not need one. I loved the simple life I had and now, I live in a condo overlooking the gulf of Thailand and we are building a large home near a beautiful golf course 13 miles from the condo! I would rather be living in a school bus traveling from state to state enjoying and seeing what each had to offer. I could do that here but my Thai wife said no as she hates driving and camping and living simple. With You Tube videos like this, I can dream and try to keep myself grounded. Thanks for posting!

It's due in no small part to to Bob Wells’ blog, website and videos that today I am a fulltime nomad, still working on the road, not yet ready to retire. Like so many others, I became extremely disenchanted with chasing "stuff" while having no time to enjoy it because I was working too much. So for a year, I downsized my life. And while I didn't get rid of everything I owned, I got rid of the vast majority of it. And the thing that struck me the most was exactly how little attachment I felt to that stuff as it left me. The big lesson there was, "And I went deeply into debt for THIS!?" Never again. And in my second year as a fulltimer, I have learned thoroughly the basic rules of survival on the road, and am now honing my ability to enjoy it. No, it's not easy. But yes...it's worth it. Thank you, Bob.

They have turned every imaginal vehicle into a home on wheels, some really do wander no plans, others have begun to meet up with others- new family and it goes on & on. Wandering Jimmy travels with his dog Olive, very calm voice, great video as he drives, super still shots. They get up everyday and do as they please, no harm no foul. I’ve gotten to see parts of America that I probably won’t ever visit and I’ve hiked some gorgeous trails. Right now during this pandemic they are living their dream of reality. Personally am fascinated by this lifestyle and contemplating joining them on some days. Time will tell.

I suspect interviewer is not and never has been the "camping" type. Too needy of convenience, and not craving the exhilaration of natural wide open spaces. Thanks, Bob.

This lifestyle isn't for everyone. While it does seem like a truly freeing and wonderful life to live. There are those who prefer to stay in one place. Seeing this, reminded me that a friend of mine told me and other friends that when her cousin retired, he sold his house and bought an RV and now he and his wife are living out on the road. The irony is that while, he's happy living on the road, his wife isn't really happy about it and would have preferred staying in their home.

I watch this man's videos on You tube and he's fantastic ! He also started a Non-Profit (501-3C) to help people get a used mini-van and he also does van-build get togethers where others team up to help some one set up and build what they need when they get a van. These people are great people and Parking and Boondocking shouldn't be illegal anywhere as long as the person isn't disturbing the peace, committing crimes and leaving piles of trash. They are not criminals but in some areas they are treated as criminal. Bob Wells is a great guy !!!

At first glance, I thought this seemed like a great segment but upon watching the previous 1 minute intro video I've changed my mind. The segment was good, the on air commentary was insulting and narrow minded telling people to "pay your rent" and laughing about it. He's either threatened by the diminishing renter pool for his rental property or he's brainwashed into believing a huge house full of crap is "life". Nomadic people are way more aware about the economy and life than you think.

Good Grief get off of your soapbox, it was a great video, lots of humor, it's called 'poking fun' in my day and age, no one took it seriously until the liberals came along and made "fun'' a hostile environment with their "I know better than you' attitude. I'm supreme, you are my inferior, crap. This video was great, take swaps, lighten up Tony Dokoupil was very personable and good humor, just out of his element

Station wagon, Telluride Colorado back in the 90's. From sharing a dinner preparation with Britney Speeds & Justin Timberlake to snowboarding some of the best resorts with a complimentary pass...it's only gotten more adventurous.
