Here is a step by step guide for how to freeze brand cattle. Freeze branding cattle continues to be popular. Ranchers are now using freeze branding as a way to reliably ID their cattle without the traditional use of hot-iron brands. This method of branding with extremely cold irons is characterized by white hair replacing the natural hair coat in the branded area of cattle.
Since its development, freeze branding has been used successfully when applied with the proper technique. Freeze branding destroys the natural pigments in hair thus producing the growth of white hair.

Thank you for using this method of branding. :-) Freeze branding does not hurt the cattle, but most people don't do it because it is expensive! Thank you so much for taking this kind of care for your cattle, they are very lucky bovines!

Soooo much better than hot branding. Don't have to make them suffer just to ID them.

Even though this method obviously WAY more humane and better in almost every way, the main issue is that dry ice isn’t cheap and (as he said) it takes a while, so if you own a ranch with hundreds of cows you probably don’t have the money, nor the time to spend towards freeze branding them so hot branding them is a lot cheaper (since fire is basically free) and a lot quicker (since it just takes less than 5 seconds a letter) I know it’s sad, but ranchers have to make money and supply a demand. The pain doesn’t last long. However, if someone can afford it (so if they have much less cows) then they should absolutely freeze brand their cattle.

@@flargarbason1740 Human skin is 2mm thick while cows are about 45mm thick therefore it doesn’t hurt the cows that much
@flargarbason1740
@flargarbason1740 3 жыл бұрын
@@MinhNguyen-VA yes, I am aware, however the thickness of skin hardly matters how thick your skin is affects how much it takes to cause harm to the vulnerable tissue underneath, causing more serious and permanent issues. However both the dermis and epidermis (the two main layers of skin) of humans and cows alike are still full of nerves, which is why even the slightest prick with a needle hurts. Along with this, the heat from the hot metal brand burns far past the dermis, causing heavy second degree burns which would still burn underneath the skin, just not causing permanent damage, so cows still are in a lot of pain when being heat branded, but it doesn’t last too long and is necessary when you have more than a thousand cows to brand, having a cheap and quick way to brand (as it only requires some fire and a couple of seconds) is much more effective.

Not a farmer so I don’t what I’m talking about but why can’t you tag the ear or is that bad too?
@alexmatt1997
@alexmatt1997 3 жыл бұрын
Ear tags fall out all the time, cows scratch their ears and it gets caught in fences, branches ect. However they are good to identify who the cow is for treatment or to pair calves and that sort of thing so you still need ear tags. We actually stopped using ear tags on our bulls because they ripped them out so often. Now we just freeze brand their number onto their flank and it works way better. Its not economical for all cows but for a couple dozen bulls it works great

what kind of gases inflict the least amount of pain? do i need a certain kind of license to possess the gas?
@dougmjones11
@dougmjones11 2 жыл бұрын
That's not a relevant question. Any gas used in this procedure has no direct contact with the animal for branding. The supercooled brass metal is what does the branding. The reason freeze branding 🥶 leaves a brand is that the metal is so cold that it destroys the skin underneath in a way that produces a white color on the skin/hair afterwards, but that ❄️ practice is more humane than hot branding 🔥 because it produces much less pain than burning the animal's skin with heat, which often causes blistering or raw skin and sometimes agitation, inflammation, bleeding, infection or sepsis (if not treated carefully and effectively).
@dougmjones11
@dougmjones11 2 жыл бұрын
The gas you're seeing is condensation from the supercooled brass metal cooling the nearby air molecules and reducing the energy state of the boiled water 💨 molecules from a gas to a liquid in the form of water vapor 💦. (It's harder to see, but there is also enough reduction of energy (coolness) to even solidify the water in the air into water-ice 🧊 where the air is in direct contact with the supercooled brass metal.)

Im sorry but if you're running a REAL cattle operation you don't have time for this. In my my extensive experience when you do it right most animals don't react that much to a hot iron. And all of them get over it within a few minutes and it's like nothing ever happened. I hate needlessly hurting a living thing just as much as anyone, but remember they are animals.

I have no experience with cattle huh? Ok. Just bought 200 unbranded cattle and we branded them as a herd. And when they are all or most are done calving in 2 months we will vaccinate, castrate, and hot iron brand the calves all together in a few hours. Im done having this conversation with you. Hope your operation goes well, goodbye.
