My freezer is 30+ years old, and it looks just like your freezer at the beginning. People tell me to buy a new one because of energy efficiency, etc. but after reading reviews a lot of the new freezers don’t seem like they’re made to last. I will definitely try checking the seal and going from there. Thank you for the video! 😃

Check the KWH to run the unit for 24 hours . Some new high efficiency units may use almost half the energy . Some utilities may offer rebates to trade up .

Spelunkerd, tried your fix for my upright freezer that was not sealing properly and it worked great! I loosen the screws around the inner door seal and then retightened them with just some pressure on the misaligned part of the door. Just like that the door is now sealing properly all around the freezer frame. Thank you saved me a lot of frustration😃 and time.

Hello. This KZfaq perfectly shows how to fix the heavy frost build up in many freezers. Over 5-10+ years the freezer door settles and creates the air gap in the door seal. Thank you again as my freezer (that the wife wanted to haul to the dump) is now frost free. It literally took me 15 minutes and no $!!! :-D

I have the same Woods freezer or at least a similar model. I was searching for a solution to my problem of ice forming in the door cavity. I have to defrost mine every year or two as you feel the door getting heavy. After seeing this vid, I think my ice problem is insignificant and I'll just live with it. I had fixed a problem years ago where the defrost drain would get blocked with ice. I took the cover off the defrost heater access and I wrapped a 12 gauge copper wire around the heater element and fed it into the hole. Enough heat transfers to the wire to keep the drain clear.

Yeah, not my favorite job. You want it defrosted quickly, before all the frozen food thaws. Some professionals use a 'steam tool', that works like a portable kettle, spraying hot steam at the frost. Chipping at frost often causes scratches in the wall, or worse, and it's too much effort for me. I warm the whole room with a space heater, with the freezer door open, and I use lots of towels to soak up the water. There are risks with doing it that way too. Thanks for watching!

+XxShekiraxX xXKirakinsxX Look for an air leak allowing moisture laden air to get inside -- it could be from the outside seal, or from a fridge or freezer door that isn't sealing properly. In addition, with a freezer fridge combination, there is often a drip tray that allows condensed water to trickle away before it has a chance to freeze. If the tube that drains the tray becomes blocked by food or debris or ice, the drip tray won't work and water has nowhere to go. Old style fridges weren't very good at confining moisture, so manual defrost was part of the homeowner dance. These days, new fridges have a built in program that defrosts the fridge automatically, with water carried away in tubes to evaporate outside the fridge housing.

When I was in the Peace Corps in Panama I shared a hospital room with a guy who somehow managed to lug a refrigerator 1hrs walking distance down a road impassable to vehicular traffic. One day he was chipping frost from all the buildup to make lemonade, it passed through the fridge wall and punctured the coolant line. He was so upset that he threw the knife on the ground, it stabbed him in the foot and thats how he came to be in the hospital.

My brother does this professionally, and he uses a hand held electric kettle with steam to release the ice more quickly. Don't be tempted to chip the ice away, you could break an AC line or damage the enamel finish. We have a room heater we can use to warm the room faster, but be careful with anything powered by propane because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning (and fire). It takes most of a morning, we do this in the winter when we can keep the frozen food on the deck for several hours in large buckets without thawing. You'll go through about a dozen towels laid on the floor to pick up water. More diligent care will be required if you have hardwood flooring.

How do you keep the food frozen while defrosting the freezer ? I live in Sunny Southern California and I dont own a 2nd or 3rd freezer. Do you somehow very quickly defrost it and dry it till its completely free of any water? Thanks, Gerry from San Diego,CA
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. We try to time defrost for winter and evening, at a time when stocks are depleted. We temporarily stack the food all together in plastic recycle containers on our deck with the most vulnerable parts covered over. If you have bears or raccoons you'll want to be more cautious. I suppose you could use a cooler with ice if you want. To melt the frost more quickly, many professionals use a kettle with boiling water, and lots of towels. Be sure the freezer is unplugged while you defrost, because with all the water there is a risk of electrocution. I suppose you could try a heat gun or hair dryer but whatever you use be aware that the cabinet is plastic and prone to melting. Be careful not to burn yourself or burn the house down. Some freezers have a defrost tray at the bottom, so you'll want to check the drain leading to that tray to be sure it's not blocked by ice or debris. Space heaters are -probably- too risky because of the various risks of carbon monoxide, fire, melting plastic and burning yourself. With a kettle and lots of towels the job should be done within about 90 minutes.

Great in identifying problem. What isn't quite clear is exactly how you squared door. I know you pushed door up against basket for stability, squaring? And then what, you re tighted screws where stripping is? And just did that by trial and error?
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, trial and error. When the screws come loose you find there is enough movement to try different strategies. Typically these kind of doors are under downward stress from gravity, so I suppose it is no surprise that pulling the outer end of the door upward will often tweak it back to a flat pattern. With one hand I pulled the door up, and the other hand I tightened one screw. Of course the camera was put down to do that. We still use that freezer and I haven't needed to fix it since then. Thanks for watching!

tomterahedrob Upright freezers allow that heavy cold air to spill out as soon as the door is opened, so they are more prone to frost than horizontal freezers where the cold air stays in place. Where I live there is a lot of humidity, so a fridge full of moist hot air replaces dry cold air every time the door is opened. The new air quickly drops to below the dew point and then moisture has to go somewhere. Look for objects in the freezer that might prevent the door from closing all the way. Just a few episodes where the door is left slightly ajar would be enough to require defrosting every few months. I don't think I'll ever buy another upright!

Could that same problem occur with a regular freezer--small on attached with fridge?
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 10 жыл бұрын
It could, if you are getting warm moist air from the room entering the freezer. However a dual fridge like that will often (especially in new units) have a defrost cycle that intermittently warms the freezer enough to melt any frost, and the resulting water spills down a defrost drain tube to a pan below. Sometimes debris, like a frozen pea, will block that drain and so moisture doesn't have anywhere to go. As a homeowner you want to cherrypick the easy repairs like a poorly fitting door or a blocked defrost drain.

That’s a “Manual defrost” freezer, not a self defrosting model. It’s not because it’s old. I’d much rather have manual defrost because there’s much less to go wrong and fail. Fan squealing and seizing up, water drain clogging up, and other defrost failures are all too common and will spoil all your food when they fail!

Don't hack it out, you'll cause damage that can't be fixed. Professionals use a kettle and steam. Ours failed in a shoulder season here in Canada, where it doesn't get very hot. So we put the contents into plastic containers and stacked them outside in the cold. Stacked together, they don't entirely thaw overnight. You may not be able to do that if you have bears in the neighborhood. We pulled the plug on the freezer, propped the door open, and waited overnight, with heaps of towels on the floor and the bottom of the freezer to soak up the water.

If it's a small hole in the sheet metal or plastic housing, you can patch it with a small square of plastic using glue or screws. Be aware that you want to avoid heating the underlying insulation because styrofoam turns into deadly phosgene gas that you can't inhale.

I love thoughtful questions like this. In my case I doubled the volume of the storage space, and my compressor doesn't have to work nearly as hard. When you run the math on how much energy you use by leaving a door like this partially open, you will be surprised. Where I live, hydro energy is expensive, and I don't want to pay for heating my home that is being cooled by a freezer door that is left partially open. Of course there's also the issue of how long the unit is expected to last when the compressor is working so hard just to achieve steady state.

+spelunkerd Actual your freezer can only heat your home as it heats the home in energy consumption in addition to heating the home anyway to create a cool space inside the freezer. Sorry, heating and cooling concepts are so often opposite of what is easier thinking!

How did you defrost your freezer
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 3 жыл бұрын
We put a space heater in the room, well away from the freezer. Put several towels in the bottom, the floor will be wet and you'll have to mop regularly as it starts to melt. Don't leave the house while defrosting, you don't want water to damage anything else. Remove all the frozen food and leave it in boxes on the deck (easier in winter). Turn the temp gauge to off so the freezer doesn't come on. Prop the door open, wait a few hours, mop up the water, let it dry and put the food back in. Don't forget to turn the temp gauge back to where it was. A faster way is to use a kettle, boil water and let the steam melt the ice more quickly. Other methods, such as a heat gun or hair dryer can be dangerous and probably not worth it. Note that the plastic cabinet can be melted with too much heat. Active chipping and scraping ice will damage the adjacent paint, so have patience.

Some freezer doors have a lock on them, opened with a key. Double check your assumption it is not locked. Pros use a kettle, with steam to thaw blocks of ice. I've never had a problem opening the door after day 2. If you have to hack at the door seal, you'll have to replace it. Those things are more expensive than most people realize. The other option is to take the hinge off, which is probably accessible from the outside.

Hi, Spelunkerd, Thanks for reply. My freezer finally thawed enough to where I could open the door: It took 4 days being unplugged + 3 days with electric blanket hanging on on the door, to release the ice plate sticking into the shelf on the inside of the door. It is in my unheated garage in November, central Oregon.

@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd Жыл бұрын
Professionals use a kettle with steam to do this quickly, it is much faster than warm air from a hair dryer. I tend to choose a cold day, I turn the freezer off, leave the door propped open, move the food outside where our Canadian winter keeps it cold, away from animals. Then I patiently wait for a few hours, and turn up the room heat. I put several towels onto the floor, you'll need to mop up a lot of water. Avoid chipping at ice, it can damage the underlying paint, and in some it can penetrate vulnerable coils which will quickly ruin the freezer.

Much easier than fkin about like this....take all stuff out fridge...pull forward slightly,push backwards and adjust feet so it's on slight angle backward so weight of door pushes against weatherseal. if no adjustable feet just shoove something under both to level (try find 2 things same thickness) Vooila

What if the food keeps getting ice but the freezer itself doesn't have any ice??

If warm moist air enters it will condense and freeze, and you lose cold dry air out to the floor. First step is to carefully check the door seals, even a tiny crack can mess up thermal efficiency. Failing that, the list is longer, including reduced refrigerant charge, a leak, inefficient fans, dirty coils, etc.

Loosen the screws holding the inner door panel to the outside, then push a corner of the door so it lines up more correctly, so the door is more flat. Then re-tighten the screws. It may take a few tries to get it perfect, you need to push it slightly beyond where you want it because it will flex back, however with all the screws loose it is surprisingly flexible.
