The iconic “tube houses”, or nha ong in Vietnamese, are a landmark feature on the streets of the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. Identifiable by their narrow facade, stacked several floors high, the buildings are influenced by French colonial design made popular by limited space in the capital. The architectural design is described as a combination of both the traditional and modern.

It's actually genius how they came up with this design. The living room and the kitchen are in the first floor/as well as where they park their motorbikes before going to sleep while bedrooms are in the 2nd and 3rd floors. The laundry and storage is in the 4th and on the roof deck is a small garden and the water tank. But as the guy said in the video. You can redesign this house depending on what room you would like to place in each floor.

I found these houses interesting and bizarre when I visited Hanoi. I was struck by how they filled up most of the city landscape, houses that I've never seen before coming from Sweden. I've been wondering their backstory ever since, I finally understand how they came to be!

These houses are called townhouses in European countries and similar to those in Amsterdam or Copenhagen. However, inadequate development caused a messy appearance of the city because there’re modern and tall houses but still old and rundown buildings next to them. Wish they all have similar facade and height

Similar problems call for similar solutions : there is a remarkable similarity to how some medieval cities grew organically here in Europe, with very narrow street sides hiding a very elongated plot, usually featuring a shop at the ground level, topped with up to 4 or 5 narrow residential floors. The comment on how it allows for a much greater flexibility is very interesting when it comes to analyze the land use prospects.

Because it's culture thing and economic thing not land nor government thing. There are many regular premium houses you are familiar with are here in my neighborhood in Hanoi, but many of those are abandoned for years even 10 years now. The problem is not because they expensive, they are sold $100,000 for 6x8m2 the same price for a 3x10m2 tube house also cost the same or even 2x to 10x times more. The problem is that gor premium house, all you can do with it is live in it while in Tube house you can do much more with it. You can open a restaurant, extra class, a kindergarten, a clothes shop, turn it into a hotel or any business you want with it, you don't have to pay more for rent for business and if this business doesn't go well, you can just easily switch it to another different business on the same post. Many of thesd tube house have a very high value in city center for it's economically.

I am a Vietnamese and for all my life, I have always thought that this type of housing is uncivilized.

They are similar to terrace houses here in Sydney, Australia which were once considered poor but are now considered very beautiful and sought after to live in.

It is not uncivilized. Its the condition that makes it look like that. You guys have to maintain it and keep it clean.

@@williamppl3624 I mean, you still have to take into account that many of these homes are also way older as well. Most the ones they showed looked maybe even pre-Vietnam war.

@@williamppl3624 Vietnam has a humid and tropical climate. Thus, there might be more maintenance for the houses. Also, not everyone in Vietnam can afford regular cleaning and maintenance of them. When I said "uncivilized", I meant the more society progresses, the more we have to be conscious about the community and the environment. So, it is in my opinion that the spontaneous tube houses in Vietnam do not meet my standard of civilized living.

The many negatives thing is climbing all the narrow stairs and floors just to go to the toilet, use the bathroom or use the laundry. No space to park a car. Unfortunately, it is about affordability and space. Doesn't suit everyones desires.

Looks better than alot of apartments, condos in SoCal unless you can afford at least $3K or more a month for rent. And you usually only get 1 spot for parking and sometimes it gets stolen when you're away for work.

Why many people keep saying this? No we don't do drugs here. Drugs in Vietnam is not even as common as US because of the stricted laws against drugs here in Vietnam.
