So this isn't actually a negative video at all, I've just notice a sad trend amongst the once "Great" French houses. And rightly so, we all associate "fine" perfumery with France.
As the years have gone buy the majority have been bought out though and there's truly a noticeable drop from what they once were. The conglomerates are eating the soul out of it all. Once prestigious brands are now only a cash cow name to be milked and give it a few years and they'll smell the same as every other brand under that umbrella.
When we were young we were surrounded by all these iconic fragrances, yes there are more around now but come on we all remember our parents and relatives and friends perfumes. They stayed with us, love or hate them and chances were they were let's say 90% French. The great Diors, Chanels, Guerlains of the day. Yes ingredients rules have meant they've had to evolve and change, but safety rules nowhere implore a brand to use cheaper ingredients and a tonne of molecular stuff. Their costs got smaller and the profits got more massive, that's the truth isn't it.
Anyways, the video says it all, and it's more a sad one than my usual animated one. I am brutal in points but we love our perfume obviously, it's why we do this. And I want to say something unexpected Chanel maintaining it's independence maybe the only light in a dark tunnel at the moment. Though maybe we'll get a new crop on incredible brands come through when the consumer talks and walks and stops putting up with this soulless dead generic cheap nonsense.
What's your favourite French house? Have you noticed the slide? Are you sad but maybe hopeful it will change. Or do you think the modern stuff is just way better.
