Dorian Guo, who is passionate about the history of France, the French way of life and the decorative arts of the Enlightenment, invited Antoine Philip to unveil the stages of the dressing of courtiers of the 18th century. In the one of the most opulent private French châteaux - chateau de Villette Paris, we discover how the gentlemen of the French court dress in the time of Marie Antoinette through garments and accessories.
The costumes, as well as a couturier of men's court wear, were made by Antoine Philip himself. If high-class people were at the time dressed by servants, Antoine Philip prefers to dress himself. It is, therefore, more a question of presenting one's personal "ritual" in this video, rather than showing what was practiced in the old times.

perds It is. I dress in the modern version of this everyday. White starched shirt, tie (only black, sometimes white), waistcoat, and coat with matching or tawny trousers (usually white dress socks too).
@pocketsand5216
@pocketsand5216 3 жыл бұрын
@randomguy8196 black tie is boring, and largely a matter of class. The ditto suit was slightly less boring, and entirely a matter of quite rigid class. Almost only in the 20th century were clothes a stylistic matter of choice and good sense, and today we live under this fun thing some folks like to call late capitalism, which is like feudalism but postmodern.

Why does the material and style look more comforting than suits now
@shane8037
@shane8037 4 жыл бұрын
Suits are still wool or linen just like they were then (I guess silk was an option you don't see anymore but silk isn't any more comfortable than the other two in my opinion). If you think anything is more comfortable than a modern suit I'm not sure what to tell you, but this roccoco three piece ain't it.

@krak2822
@krak2822 4 ай бұрын
The reason why rococo suits look comfortable is because they are made for your body and nobody else's. Unfortunately today everything is being mass-produced for the average person. This may seem good but no, nobody has the same body so it will feel uncomfortable, because all these clothes weren't made to comfort you but more to distribute to the masses.

They might not mention it, but this is only one snapshot of time. Fashion today changes quickly and that was also true of the 18th century. This gentleman would have ditched the fancy shit in the 1790s unless he wanted to be executed. The 1790s were indeed a period of greater simplicity than the time before. I'm putting together an ensemble from the decade myself, before finishing my 1780s outfit. The former consists of a shirt, stockings, shoes, neck stock, waistcoat, and likely a coat or similar outerwear garment. It's a lot simpler than this, and still looks amazing. If you're interested, Samson Historical and Townsends both produce 18th and 19th century garb. It's a bit pricey, though. Learning to sew shirts especially cuts around $80 off of each one, and when you're trying to have three or four to wear, that's a lot of dough. The issue with producing a simpler version is that it wouldn't be correct. Clothes in this era were tailored to your measurements, and that's hard to do with mass-produced items. They'd also be lower quality, and that's not a good thing. Do check it out if you're interested, though! Historical fashion is an amazing thing.

I think an aspiring Gentleman or Aristocrat who will be joining the military to prove himself would dress himself. As he's starting out as one. Warfare often showed high status. Then you can hire a servant to dress yourself after your military warfare. Here we see him dressing himself. I'd say he's just starting out as an Aristocrat,but had not yet been battle tested. Which makes sense.
