Thank you for sharing. I am exactly at this point with my French polishing. However, I’m getting a milky streaky looking finish. I recently tried swapping out the rubber as you suggested. But as this is getting worse I’m wondering if I can over do the spiriting step. I will try to use more force on the polishing action, but I’m wondering if I need to reintroduce oil to get the gloss to return. Thanks again. Sean

Hi sir, I'm at the spiriting off process now. I have a decent gloss but there's still some oil residue. I've tried spiriting off for two sessions but I still have some oil left and I get streaks that are visible under light. I've used a new cloth and only added alcohol and just a few drops of shellac to the cotton inside. Do you have any tips on getting a smooth surface without streaks?

The first technique that I was taught (described in a previous video) is called stiffing. It's essentially the same technique as spiriting off, but done periodically though the polishing process. So it's possible that if you waited till the end to get rid of the oil that there's a lot of oil to eliminate. Also when you say you see streaks is it oil you think is streaking or the polish seems inconsistent?

@@expatluthierinthephilippin6441 you're right I didn't manage to remove most of the oil after the bodying sessions. But I also level sanded before the last few coats with olive oil so I think that may have caused a lot of the oil to accumulate.

Sounds like you need a bit more spiriting off since more oil seems to be coming to the top. Better to get it out now. I also would wonder how much oil you used. I use a relatively small amount of walnut oil in my jar of polish. As to olive oil for lubrication, I only use a drop or two to help lubricate the pad.

@@expatluthierinthephilippin6441 ok I will persist with spiriting off. I probably used too much oil because the sandpaper clogged up really fast when I was level sanding. Thanks for the reply.

@@expatluthierinthephilippin6441 ok I've managed to sort out the oil issues and the streaks. Turns out there were still residue oil, removed by further spiriting sessions. I then realised my bridge location was off by 2mm, but I had already taped off the area. Big mistake! I'm trying to repair the area but I have this distinctive line left by the tape. So far I've been sanding and trying to blend the new shellac in, but the line is still there. Do you have tips? Should I just sand the entire bridge area to bare wood and restart?
