This is a video of guitar I refinished with shellac. I did the French polishing method. I feel that I have greatly improved in my finishing, but I still have a lot to learn. I love the way shellac makes wood look! It’s quite amazing! It gives it a cats eye effect and reflects light in a three dimensional holographic kind of Way. It also gives the word a beautiful chatoyant look. There is a depth to the wood that I don’t see with other finishes. I do understand that most builders are not going to French polish their steel string guitars. It takes an incredible amount of time and effort and they would not be able to make a profit if they did. I’ve enjoyed doing this and I am currently working on the last guitar that I refinished with lacquer. I’ve decided to strip it off and use the French polishing method. One of the drawbacks with shellac is that it is not a very durable finish. It seems to scratch rather easily, but it is easily repairable. Some of the pros to shellac finishes is from what I’ve read, they are very flexible and they allow the wood that the guitar is made out of to vibrate and resonate more freely. And shellac finishes look amazing. It’s a very thin finish that must be applied and thin layers if your French polishing.

I buy, what I would classify as "beginner's guitars" and repair and fix them up. Clean and polish them practicing luthiers. Not to make a living but as a old amateur. Plan on donating them to Vets.@@TheJoshSchneider

Beautiful work! I wish I knew how to charge the pad with shellac.

Add a few drops and then barely dab your finger in oil and rub the pad . Then pound it a few times on your palm. The key is the oil/shellac ratio.

I dare you to take the next step of this journey and try building your own acoustic, first with a kit (you can buy the bracing already carved in a kit with the sides already molded and with the top already cut, all you have to do is glue it all together) and then later carving your own from scratch when you see how it works. And using this superior french polishing method you already have all the gear for. Looking forward to your further adventures. You did a great job on that guitar and it really sounds way better. Well done.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes I have considered building a kit guitar but I’m concerned about the cost of Al of the other items that will make the process easier. One thing I see is the the mold that the body is glued together in. The kits don’t come with that. I wonder how straight I could get it glued with whatever the kit comes with. Cardboard? So many other items as well I don’t have. Fret levels , router ( not that I need one for a kit) fret mallet, sticks to hold down the bracing while the glue dries etc ….

@@TheJoshSchneider most of those glueing jigs can be made with offcuts, a jigsaw, and a nailgun. you can even make most of the clamps yourself instead of buying them. look at how other luthiers do it on youtube. ask for offcuts at local woodshop, they often have a whole box they'll give you. also pallet wood is a great source as well. also firewood is very cheap for this. if you look at old photos of the Martin factory and even further back the guitars in Europe, they made most of the early guitars with very little. handplanes, chisels, gouges and scrapers might not give you cnc precision, but it has more character that way. all the pro luthiers make their own tools anyway. before stewmac it was all selfmade.

Sounds beautiful! Nice job on the finish! I have a Martin 000-15M all mahogany and I'm a big fan of an open pore finish. Carry on my friend!

@@TheJoshSchneider I had similar looking guitar that my parents bought me when I was 10yrs old back in 1970, the Harmony H-165. One of the Nuns at my church taught me to play - Fun times! I loved the natural finish on it and went looking for a substitute last year. The action on the Harmony was pretty terrible if I recall, but so was I at the time...😂

@@paulhendershott667 yeah, harmony is a good beginner guitar but that’s all they are. You did well getting the Martin. I think I’ll try to grain fill if I ever do another French polish.

Thanks! It’s an L’Benito guitar made in Chile 🇨🇱 from 2000 to about 2009. The company went out of business. Benito supposedly worker at Taylor guitars for about 10 years as head of assembly before moving back to his native country to start his own company. They are great guitars for the money in my opinion. Better low/ midrange than Taylor . Very vintage sounding. Not sure on the year of build on this model, the sound hole sticker was missing when I bought the guitar. Grand concert body style. 🙂

@@JEL5150 good idea! Start out on lower tier guitars and once you get better at it then attempt more expensive ones.
