Strange to see the amount of haters in the comment sections of these archive videos. Spoiled little children who brag about "bravery" and despise "surrender" from the comfort of their homes... None of us have any idea what these people went through.

Approximately 20 yrs ago i travelled to France for a combined business trip and vacation, in advance I’d printed off some photos and transcripts of my father and his experiences during WW2, there were photos of his time in The Netherlands, France, North Africa, and Italy. There were also letters (and a series of post war 1950’s) correspondence from a French family that he’d befriended during the liberation of France..... So, late 1990’s early 2000 I’m at CDG airport in Paris baggage area and waiting for my bags, it seemed to take forever but when my bags came off the carousel I was probably the last to exit through customs..... I was pulled to the side and asked my details, flights etc and then to open my bags. When then customs officer opened a zipped pocket on my suitcase and removed the folder of WW2 photos and correspondence his demeanour changed from suspicion to super curious; he asked me why I had these ‘war memorabilia photos’ and I explained that it was my first visit to France and that my father had been an allied WW2 veteran. I can’t explain how this guy changed from checking my bags to standing to attention and snapping off a salute, I left the customs check area in tears.

At the 1:16 mark, there is a card indicating the director as being Wyler. My guess is this would be William Wyler, who would go on to direct films like Roman Holliday, and Ben-Hur. During the war, he joined the Army Air Corps, where he made films for the Government. One was Memphis Belle, about a B-17 crew, and it’s mission over Germany. In any case, this would account for the quality of this film, as he would have had access to the best equipment around at the time for his work.

5:40 I wonder what that man's story was. He was older, possibly old enough to have seen some service time during the Great War. So many videos like these make me wonder what happened to the people in them.

At 2:20 note the Gamma sign on the wall is the symbol of 'La Milice', the anti-communist militia. At 2:31 there's a Gamma sign on the left of the door just behind the soldier, this building is probably the local HD of "la Milice", this is why the soldiers are firing at the door. These images are from the south of France probably near Marseille. At 2:37 there's an ad on the wall for an insurance company, the address is 50 la Canebière, it's a very famous street of Marseille.

This film seems to provoke a lot of reaction in the comments section . And it comes from people too young to have known the realities of a nazi occupation then liberation . By comparison we live in peaceful and less complex times - these people should shut up and be thankful for it .

People back then were stronger, I dont mean physically, but mentally, they could deal with death and torture better than anyone from generations who came after that. Especially millennials, as a millennial myself I believe most of us would either just sit and accept death or fight as if we were in a video game, but not having skills or the strong mentality to fight back.

I lived in Paris for 6 years, we covered Paris , Normandie etc. The Museums of Paris are impressive, they cover WWI extensively. The Time and space given to the Marquis and French resistance I thought was poor. Yes France was occupied and a strange North/South status quo. I believe every Frenchman and woman was in resistance. Today the English and Americans and Russian etc feel they capitulated. I do not see it that way. The French need to be proud of WWII actions. They defended and allowed the British to retreat from Dunkirk and organized an effective Resistance, seen when the Allies invaded. The Allies killed many French in Caen and around Normandie. Seen as the price of freedom. The museums should do more to celebrate the Marquis.

These were taken with director george Stevens personal 16mm camera. He shot the movie Gunga den with the same camera. They are the best quality films taken in ww2. To me they look like they could have been shot last week.

Interesting mix of captured German and allied weapons. Some of these resistance weapons made their way to Algeria to fight against the French giving up Algeria and also in France. There was a giant crime wave after the war with entrenched former resistance becoming heroin traders. Hence the movie French connection

British SOE and the American OSS sent supplies, ammo, weapons, and medicine to the French resistance fighters by parachutes. Eventually allied special agents, troops, tanks, and snipers helped the resistance. For every German soldier was killed 10 or many French people or resistance had to be killed by the German firing squad. Or an entire town would be made into a ghost town like Oradour Sur Glane on June 10th, 1944 over 300 people were murdered. It was carried out by the SS Das Reich and still no one actually live there as a memorial.

There is a lot that can be learned from the French Resistance. How to resist and build up an underground force. How to use information and targeted attacs to break a hostile force. How to help the good Desert. How to break free from suppression by violance and fraternisation. In the 20ies General Collins of the IRA used the same tactics, but of course against a human enemy. If the SS or alke ever should come back into a surpressing position ition the same general strategies apply, but learning from the enemy, one will have to understand that the SS introduced Totenkopf Divisions to warfare and that those deserve mid-age, crusader like vengeance. I loved to study everything on General Collins, La Resistance and Mid Age torture prisons.
