It is because of the experience in ww1. The Germans believed if they continued the fight after they won the east front they would have won the ww1 in the west with new troops but got backstabbed by politics. “Dolchstoß legende” like the mighty Siegfried. So they truly thought they have to fight to the end. Fight for your lost comrades.

Being German and understanding the narrator, I was surprised how much the voiceover gave away of the real situation. Troops going into "counterattack", American troops as "liberators" of France, troops being depoyed "after short training" etc. Almost every single sentence gave away that it was not going well for the Nazis.

Although the caption says 31 December 1944, this was obviously filmed several months before that date.There are plenty of leaves on the trees, indicating a time earlier in the year. Also, there is footage of Panzer Ace, Michael Wittmann, who was killed on the 8th of August 1944. Therefore, this footage was probably taken a few weeks after D-Day.
@czwarty7878
@czwarty7878 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's error of description, on AP Archive site there are multiple videos that are dated 31 december 0:00 AM of various years. Maybe they couldn't find proper dates, maybe archive only listed the videos by the year or something, that would be my guess. I doubt they would release that Normandy footage on 31 december when more recent offensives that gave "new hope" took place. And while of course back then gaining footage and linking it into one film took time, another Deutsche Wochenshau about operation Wacht am Rhein is dated for 16 january 1945, so only 2 weeks after. So I think this video could be dated for some few weeks after 15-17 June 1944, judging by the footage of SS Tigers combat.

@@lynskyn2 not really, they had just enough action for some recordings. Allies had air superiority but it doesn't mean entire sky became a no-fly zone for Luftwaffe, they were just told to stay away from allied fighters unless the latter were at severe disadvantage; some few jabo missions still were active. Few fighters strafed the beaches on 6th june, some FW190s attacked ships with rockets, Ju88s also were carrying out bombings and mining missions, also the airborne before Carentan were bombed by german jabos. So it's just enough for recording something for propaganda... And that's about it.

My uncle George landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and he was only 5 or 6miles inland when they started running into literally thousands of German surrendering and by mid October more than 600,000 Germans had surrendered, including more than 200,000 in Normandy alone, the Germans were absolutely overwhelmed on D-Day. I talked to several German soldiers when I was a kid back in the 1960s and they all said the same thing they had absolutely no idea the Americans would show up in such great numbers and overwhelmed them so quickly

And since we know they were raped and murdered.. (so were ukranians. finns. and anyone the red army fought. so it wasnt because the germans were mean and deserved it, it wouldve happened if they had lost the war. which eventually they did lose. kinda hard to beat the entire world when its backed by international finance and has a trade war waged on it for 14 years. They werent trying to conquer the world they were trying to get their pre wwi land back. and stop pols from murdering germans by the thousands. imagine if the austrailians all of the sudden decided to give new zealand to the indoneasians.. how unpopular it would be... thats how it was when danzig was given to poland despite 99% of its residents voting against it. it would be like giving san diego CA to mexico depsite 99% of san diegans voting against it.. but the international powers just say "too bad.. you live in mexico now." young soldiers fought because if they didnt. they knew theyd die just the same. except instead of dying fighting like a man along side their brothers in arms.. theyd be killed like a helpless child.. along side their sisters and mothers while they get raped and he can do nothing to stop it.. if those were your choices... would you fight? and die atleast fighting the enemy? or would you rather just get your head crushed with the butt of a rifle while your mom and sisters are sharing a lineup of 50 horny soviet soldiers each?

This film actually wasnt so full of propaganda as others of that era. They are pretty much being honest about crisis and struggle! Footage was often reused though and used out of context to create more of an action clip instead of actual footage like you got from the afghanistan war. It was more or less all staged and shot in the breaks from combat. Soldiers throwing grenades etc there was never an enemy near. When the fighting went down the photographers had diners in berlin and were celebrated for their great footage . They went back when fighting was over to shoot nice new propaganda later with the survivors of the real battle. Also they only shot the armored vehicles while in reality german military equipment was 80% moved by horses. And they still had kavalry units at beginning of the war where the noble would be in and stuff. Wild time!

Interesting to see a brief shot of Michael Wittmann, the Tiger tank commander who destroyed singlehanded a British armoured column near Villers Bocage. He was killed a few weeks later. Not many ground fighters achieved hero status in WW2, though some pilots did.

@@cs-rj8ru A revelation was made in the US magazine "World at War" which gave a plausible explanation why the Heer put up stiff resistance in the Fall of 1944: Prior to the Fall of 1944, there was a Heer reserve of 100K+ soldiers in Germany which was a standby armed force that the principals of Operation Valkyrie were planning to use to overthrow the Third Reich after Hitler was assassinated. Well, we all know the plot was foiled. But afterwards, Hitler disbanded that standby armed force and sent them to the western and eastern fronts to take up the fights against the Allies. So, after the Western Allies had made swift progress to liberate Paris, they were suddenly facing a German Army that was fortified with additional tens-of-thousands new soldiers.

@@FirstLast-di5sr You're right. I just want to state that the Allied victory was not a certainty and the defeat of Nazi Germany was a long battle with many ups and downs. It wasn't only constant retreat and failure. Many Americans had to risk their lives knowing it could be all for nothing. The stranded invasion in Italy is an earlier example of that. The battle of the bulge and oparation Market Garden are later examples that prove the same thing: Germany had military capabilities that could be extremely dangerous.
