that's why my conclusion is that he's the control freak type. Not that I'm trying to justify him, it's very annoying and I think it makes perfect sense that Shaoshang would lose trust in him in the end, but I think it's consistent with his story. With everything that happened to him, the real reason he's so demanding about her is that he wants everything to fit in his scheme, because he's been planning for so long. I find the scene when he gets drunk and breaks down in the rain is pivotal there. He was trying so hard to make all ends meet, to achieve both vengeance and happiness at the same time, he'd let himself hope that he could be happy with Shaoshang after everything else was taken care of. But his hamletic dilemma was always going to make him feel like getting revenge would cost him everything else. So when (that certain something happens and) he yells at fate and the gods under the pouring rain, he is not just mad, he is facing the desperate conclusion that, in the end, he'll have to do it himself; which means he and Shaoshang are done.

...she hasn't exactly proven herself to be trustworthy. She has harmed Ling Buyi's agendas on multiple occasions, has straight-up said she doesn't like to obey others or be told what to do(not even when others try to reason with her), and didn't really care when she was told that the things she did could harm him. She still went out and did her own things to accomplish her own agendas. On the other hand, Zisheng consistently protected her over and over again so her not trusting his sincerity in wanting to keep her safe is a huge puzzle to me.

@@pirimpallopirimpalli4932...and why would he give her all the details of his life-long goals when she is so impulsive and has proven herself to not stand by him(because she thinks she's so much smarter) or when he gives her warning about rippling consequences and domino effects amd she ignores him? He warned her that her actions might harm him all the way back in EP32 or 33(I know it's there because I just rewatched those parts), she didn't care. @@divinearia1601 a generic "what you do may not be good for me" doesn't cut it in a relationship. The best summarized comment I've seen below is "this does not age well". As much as I adore him my stance with her is, stay exactly on the path you're on. Anyone who hasn't noticed the growth in her especially after the engagement and under the Empress guidance and care is missing it. I love the subtle way in which they are tracking her evolution. She has risen from the depths of loneliness she had about her with her mother's return and ill-equipped and ill-advised way of loving her. I remember that monologue to the moon after a convo with her mom where she restated she could only depend on herself, "there are more that hate you than those that love you" were her words. She has come a long way and he had to have known the line he casted had a very long lead in which to draw her near. They belong together as he accepts the core of who she is and vice versa. Her acceptance and love is not unconditional and he will reap both the good and bad of what he has sowed between them. "Put them together and weigh the importance of each to you".

I could understand Niao Niao's behavior because it stems from years of neglect and abadonment when she was young. She's always on survivor-mode, she trusts no one bec no one is on her side. And it's hard to get out of that mindset. She always thinks she can fend for herself and finds it hard to believe some one will protect her. I could also understand Zisheng's point of view. He wants to protect her but it's frustrating when she doesn't listen or believe in him. He's trying to make her understand that doing it her way could have dire consequences esp when it comes to imperial palace issues. The people in power over there can simply kill her quietly or have her whole family framed and executed. He wants her to see the bigger picture before acting on her own. He wants her to trust him to protect her. This scene is interesting bec when you watch the later episodes, you'll see the reversal of their roles - Zisheng not trusting Niao Niao at all, and their relationship suffered greatly from it.

Agreed but he knew what he was taking on with her issues and how they effected her thought process. She's literally been traumatized and conditioned to seek her own form of justice. She is someone who must be reasoned with and explain the plan so she can follow, LBY never told her anything but expected his actions to speak for him but she's young and never knew love (whether giving or receiving) so she doesn't actually know how to trust. And the fact he's holding himself back as well, is a little hypocritical on his part.

He's making her do all the trust and sharing in the relationship. In any case, choosing a harmless partner just for the sake of being safe isn't exactly idiotic, you know? @@tatsumakijim I'd say she did a lot more for him than he did for her. She brought a light and hope in his life that he probably didn't even expect he'd want, but when he found it he couldn't help himself. Also, she's the only person in his life who actually understood him; she figured him out all by herself. On the other hand, although he was instrumental in her growth, the real life-changer for her was the Empress. As for him, he made his choices. I respect his choices as long as we don't start talking about this point here: how many responsibility he forcibly took with her, how many promises he made to her, how many changes he demanded from her, and then threw them all out the window. If she hadn't saved his ass and his reputation (all possible ways that third day after his massacre of Ling Yi), he would have never got a chance to make up for it, so however mad she was at him, I stand by her all the way. And this episode here, this is not okay. First of all, it was her trauma, her life, her pain, which he took and made all about himself. Secondly, in a relationship you may wish for your partner to give you more, but you don't shame them if they won't. You can ask, not demand. Thirdly, and perhaps most to the point, he has no right whatsoever to make this kind of demand of her, when in truth he's hiding his whole identity and life purpose from her; it's like he's asking her to do all the trusting in their relationship, to give all of herself to him so he can keep himself in the darkness. Oh, and we know he's actually going to use this as a double excuse for his secret plans. That's gaslighting times square.

Some are simple and straight to the point and the shallow and short lived ones work great as highlighters of something bigger. They have really built her from the ground up. Her mind is that of an engineer for real, practical, stubborn, self-sufficient, immersive, cool, and logic focus. Even the way she goes about discovering her love for him. Her upbringing had a hand in layering on some negative traits but they will soften.

I was rewatching the scene when Zisheng goes to see Shaoshang in her room the evening after she was thrown into the lake. She cried into his shoulder like a baby. Right after he asked her what happened, she asked him to teach her how to react if somebody bullied her, and even mimicked the scene of being pushed from behind. How the heck didn't he get it? He was so perceptive about everything else in that room, but he didn't figure that that's exactly what had happened to her? And here he complains she didn't open up to him. WHUT?

Probably cause she felt she deserved it, examples from her upbringing. It’s like “Oh well, might as well accept my punishment, I’ll be blamed anyway.” As for him I’m thinking something must have triggered the demos he holds very closely. At that point his rage took over and saw nothing but his revenge. And in his mind even she ceased to exist, but just maybe within his most guarded heart he’s silently yelling for her to save him. But his wanting revenge at that time would rather push her away than to be caught up in aftermath. And once that rage cools down and sees the results, especially loosing her. Thinks he deserves it, better to loose her than to see her dead. Especially when those rage demons reappear, and the next time they won’t care who’s in front of him. To think him being a soldier for his entire life and wanting revenge at such a young age, he must have suffered from what is now diagnosed as PTSD. In that era so many soldiers must have committed unspeakable crimes, and punishments at the whim of their leaders, those demons inside of them must have been clawing at them to be let loose. She was his savior, he could have let her go long ago. But he needed her until he pushed her away to protect her. And on her part even she suffered a little from her own form of PTSD. So two stubborn people head butting each other and neither one willing to ask for outside help, for thinking they deserve whatever they get. Sorry my comment is a little long winded. Niao Niao had a tough time growing up, but she didn’t have to watch her entire family being slaughtered, she didn’t have to take on a false identity in order to protect his real one. She never fought in wars, saw innocent people die, saw evil people survive. She was young, inexperienced, and a pretty typical self centred teen, used to do doing things her way, used to feeling rejected by her mother, used to running wild. Zisheng finally realised the mistake he had made in making her stay. He couldn’t trust her because she was too immature. I think right from the beginning he would have told her who he really was and what he needed to do to take revenge if she had been the trustworthy woman she eventually grew up to become, in his absence. Timing is everything! But his love was unwavering, and in the end she discovered that her love for him was also unshakable. Great storytelling. Best scene was the arrow extraction. Said it all. 😊❤

first of all, we don't all need to go through war and devastation to learn the power of love, and if the "normal" status is to hatch vengeance for 15 years while lying to everyone about the very core of your identity, I think the definition of "normal" is very wrong. Secondly, it doesn't matter what his reason is, he made this relationship happen by force and he made promises he couldn't keep; he also chose to keep everything inside and be inconsistent about it. Here he's reproaching her for not being completely dependent on him. Which in itself is sick by modern standards. Also, it's hypocritical because he shares zilch with her. Finally, what do you mean by "immature"? Please point out where she is immature, because it seems to me die-hard fans of the male lead just find any excuse to hate on the girl all the time.

He couldn’t believe his luck when she became free and she couldn’t believe a catch like him would love her. Yes, he made mistakes, serious ones, ones that nearly cost him the love of his life, but so did she, unwittingly, by being self centred. She didn’t have his responsibilities, duties, obligations. If the palace is so dangerous he should not have brought her there at all. Which is kinda vile, because it means he gaslighted her into thinking everything was so complicated and dangerous and she was being unrelenting and a bad partner, when in fact his problem was that he didn't want her to know what kind of mess *he* was making of himself and of their relationship. So, yeah, he had is reasons, but they were far from pure. @@ursiemay it seems to me this way to put it is a bit too tragic, it idealises Zisheng too much, and it's also belied by the story. He could have probably gotten justice against Ling Yi if he'd managed to bring Peng Kun to testify, but Ling Yi managed to get Peng Kun killed first, and maybe that's because Zisheng did too many things in secret and alone. He did implicate Shaoshang, no matter what we say now, because she was already his fiancée (she was so implicated with him that their engagement was enough of an excuse for the emperor to save her from the law when her whole family was incarcerated for treason, for instance), and if he thought dumping her two days before the wedding without any explanation would save her from the consequences of his plan to die in parricide, then he was quite a fool; his best friend the third prince, for instance, was all too ready to blame Shaoshang for Zisheng's crime, and to get her executed that day. Anyway, in spite of Zisheng's best efforts to die, Shaoshang still managed to prove the truth, how he was not a parricide, how Ling Yi was a traitor and a murderer, and she restored Zisheng's name, so his judgment about keeping her out of it was objectively wrong. Also, it was wrong in my opinion, and in Shaoshang's opinion, and hopefully in the opinion of anyone who acknowledges a woman as capable to make her own choices; because if she's old enough and mature enough to marry him, then she sure af should be old enough and mature enough to make her choices about her life. And if you think Zisheng's justification is that he was insane or almost insane, you're also saying that his judgment was not reliable, so we may forgive him (*if* we choose to), but not say that he had any right or was right in any way.

She wanted to marry Yao to escape her family...so, I'm pretty sure her decision here had something to do with that. You can see her immediate reaction when her mother said those negative things about her in front of everyone. She also told Emperor Wen she didn't need anyone making decisions for her and that she could make her own decisions. To me, she did it to rebel and to spite her mother.
