Not sure why anyone would give this video a thumbs down. Everything David plays and teaches is spot on as far as I’m concerned. The concepts in this lesson are something anyone who plays the blues should know and understand.

David, your videos are so helpful and informative, I love them all. Just want to add one thing that might help folks understand the concept. As I learned it, a tritone substitution is not simply that its a tritone away. Every dominant chord has a tritone between the 3rd and the 7th. When the root of two dominant chords is a tritone apart, they share the same internal tritone, just flipped. So with a C7 chord, the tritone is E to B flat. The chord with its root a tritone away, F#7, has the same notes for the 3rd and 7th, those being A# (Bflat) for the 3rd and E for the 7th. So a tritone sub has the exact same internal tritone as the chord it is substituting for.

I remember once when I was young being given morphine following surgery. I remember feeling like the laws of gravity and physics were mine to command, I could fly and float on the ceiling at will, I could journey to distant stars and back in the blink of an eye. I was one with everything and everyone. It was an incredible mind altering experience. I believe I just had a similar experience just now as the world of tritone subs and functional dominants just opened for me in a way that altered my mind. For a moment, I was at one with the music. Thank you David. If I could like this lesson more I would. Now - to practice! (Doesn't sound as good as - to the Bat Mobile! But you get the idea.)

David, it is a breath of fresh air that you post these interludes of blues expression! Thank you so much for your breakdown of these sounds and fingerings ... the beauty, for me, is the application and how I can insert these phrase into my other musical phrases in any blues tunes! Kudos!!!

Great lesson, as usual for DHam. I always "ask" why "I" wasn't "informed" about tritones sooner in my guitar journey. As fundamental as triads, knowing tritones is incredibly valuable in learning your chords. You instantly have "shells" in two positions that you can add notes to. Modify the tritone for major, minor, 6th, sus4, sus2, or add a root, or a 13th, etc for fuller chords (although I have also learned that sometimes more is less.
