This lesson is an example of what makes David's Fingerstyle Five so great. He breaks everything (songs/techniques) down and then builds them up. Just like real life, you have to learn how to crawl before you walk, and learn how to walk before you run. As a member for over three years, I HIGHLY recommend David's Fingerstyle Five membership. As a world-class player and teacher he has an answer for any issue you might have trying to learn this style. At first, it feels awkward getting your fingers and thumb to work independently and together but he has lots of tips to make them do so using slow, easy to understand techniques. I used to look at the big picture and get overwhelmed, but no more. As you can see and hear, he's got GROOVE for days. Do you like and want to learn walking bass lines over moving chords? He teaches that also. It's an addicting style to learn and play and thanks to David I can't stop. An intervention would be useless. Did I mention it's FUN. Give him a try.......you're welcome

I have to ask a question here that may seem a little strange. Or at least, out of the ordinary. I am not a professional musician. I am a retired structural designer. I won’t go into my life story, but the short of it is that I started playing drums in 1962. So I have more than a couple of years of built in rhythm. About four or five years ago I ran across a video of a guy named John Fahey. Being a died in the wool old time rock and roll guy, I had never heard of him. But I was mesmerized. (I discovered that there are some other guys that play that stuff also. But that’s a different story.) I guess because of the lifelong habit of playing rhythmic patterns and knowing drum rudiments helped me along. The picking hand finger control and alternating thumb was not that difficult to get a grasp on. I also discovered from the very start that tuning the guitar to open C or open D got me to where I wanted to be. Now I would like to learn how to play some “standard” tuning things and I’m having some trouble figuring out where to start. In my professional life I would have referred to it as “reverse engineering”. But maybe that is the wrong way to look at it.

I think you've come to the right place. The fact that you've played drums will make it easier establishing a groove that many of these songs require. It's helped me because I was a rhythm guitarist in 60's and 70's bands. David has lots of standard tuning songs and a few in Drop D. I don't think there is a better teacher out there for fingerstyle blues. There are many great KZfaq videos he has done and the Fingerstyle Five membership is where I've learned the most. I think you will too. :):)

I’m a novice at this style of guitar and I’m wondering how I can build more skills like this demonstration.
