Freya wasn't actually a name it was a title that simply means Lady or the Lady, she doesn't appear the lore until very late in the Viking age where scholars believe her mythology and Folklore about her evolved out of the goddess Frig the All mother wife of Alfather Odin. Many of the stories about Freya parallel those of Frig so they were the same Deity before she evolved into a separate goddess in the very late Viking age. Also because these Folkloric tales were originally part of a very fluid oral tradition, some stories existed in certain areas and not in others. For example Freya was completely unknown to the pagan Danish Saxons that migrated to England after the collapse of the Roman empire around 410. They only knew her as Frig. So we know Deity veneration was a flexible thing with Synchronizations occurring as social and political needs dictated to suit the needs of the tribes at any given time. We know this from other threats of pagan literature such as the ancient Greek magical pyprus' that have literally hundreds of entries of Deities being adapted and Synchronized suit peoples needs. Also from pagan Roman historical evidence from ancient historian's such as the Pagan Roman Taitcus who logged and Synchronized all if the pagan Deities from the pagan Cultures it conquered and obliterated. Identifying gods like Wotan (Woden) with Mercury and the Greek Hermes. It's almost impossible to now try and understand how these deities ( pagan gods) were understood and venerated because everything we know about them was written down by later Christian authors such as Snorri in the 1200s, over 2 centuries after the last of the northern European pagans converted to Christianity. So the original northern pagans had no codified texts to read and pass on to as we do today such as the Poetic Eddas that are a byproduct of the later Christian west, written in a Latin/Greco framework ideology, and from their Christian philosophical point of view and later time that was far removed from the original Viking oral tradition that was largely Animistic in nature. It's known that Snorri and some of the other anonymous Christian authors that contributed to the Eddas literally made things up and omitted things that they thought wouldn't have been of any interest to their entirely Christian audience. its also know that they interpreted certain aspects of these stories through the lens of their Christian understanding and bias, as again the pagan Viking age had ended several centuries before with no original written source material for the later Christian writers of the Eddas to draw upon. So with this in mind it's completely impossible and fruitless to try and reconstruct these pagan traditions as too much has been lost to the sands of time, meaning no matter what you come up with in pursuit of authenticity, it will only ever be a shadow or an echo of something that existed centuries before.
