Knowing what type of lube to run in your gears is half the problem. The other we half we tackle by showing you how to change differential fluid. This task remains about the same, regardless of what type of differential you're dealing with. What does change is which type of lube that you use. We're changing the lube in a 2003 Silverado 1500HD, so it's running a G80 limited-slip differential. In this rearend, if you're running synthetic oil, then you really don't need to add friction modifiers like an LS additive. Furthermore, these truck G80 diffs only require GL-5 lubricant without additive, since the locking mechanism works different than the typical posi-traction rearends in Muscle Cars.

ALWAYS take out [or just loosen it] the fill plug before anything else. If you can't get it out to refill the fluid, you're in a heap load of trouble.

Not a bad rule of thumb. In our case, it was coming out, regardless. If it didn't, we would either refill from the breather tube at the very top, albeit very slow, or we drill a hole in the cover and weld in a bung for a fill hole. Or, replace the with an aftermarket cover. Still, your tip is the smartest option to use. Thanks for the help and for watching.

Got more info that I needed, I have a g80 and right now in Aamco for chatter and harsh engagement I believe is fluid additive related, but now it sounds as though it may be resolved with a proper fluid change, great video and great information, plz touch base on how modifiers can either change or harm the g80 for people like me, lots of us out there

Losen the fill plug first, if you can't open it, you are in big trouble after you drain the oil.

Thanks for showing what a differential is and the different types of fluids available. I now have a clue what a "differential service" means in my auto service manual.

Hi Tim, very impressive video, I’ve always used permetex instead of a gasket and never leaked, your better than me I can’t work without a radio I don’t like quiet, everyone different lol, nicely done,

No problems with Permatex here, when used properly. It works great. The pain is just removing it. I always have the radio on, except when filming. KZfaq does not like music playing in the background, since the music companies want their royalties whenever their songs are played. Thanks for watching, as always.

@@Shoptoolreviews Tim I was just teasing you about the radio lol, I can understand that though, people hear their song and want to be compensated, I know producing videos like you do is tons more than meets the eye, my son did it and got right off it, I give all you guys tons of credit for your hard work, I see how specific you are in your videos, very interesting, have a great day, Bob,

Bro, amazing walkthrough! I've never seen this process done before although it looks simple. Question, how important is it to do change the differential fluid on a regular car like an Accord or Camry? At what kind of time/mileage intervals should this be done? Thanks!!
@Shoptoolreviews
@Shoptoolreviews 2 жыл бұрын
That really depends on the make and model and the purpose of a vehicle. A truck that's pulling heavy loads need to be checked and changed every 50K miles or so. High performance cars with a lot of punishment should do the same, or even more often. Some passenger cars would probably be fine for 200k miles (I can hear the yelling at me now). I'd do some research on the web about your make and model. Just search something like "2013 Accord Diff Fluid" and you'll probably have a forum or two with discussion threads about this. You can learn a lot by seeing what your peers are doing. Thanks for watching.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to create clickbait in the title. I just know that anytime diff fluid comes into conversation (especially with trucks and high-performance cars), friction modifiers (additives) become the center of the argument. Understanding the actual rearend (diff) that you have is really the best first step. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for explaining. I have to force myself to slow down. I try to do these videos in the light of a mechanic that may be doing this for the first time, and he/she has been told to just "go service that diff" without much instruction. Have a great day.
