Gov-locks actually also have clutch packs inside. Basically when the flyweights begin to move outwards, the first weight actuates a pressure plate that applies the clutches and effectively brakes the two axle shafts before the mechanical latch fully locks the spider gears, yielding a smooth engagement. The clutch system works well for most normal driving and stock size tires. The problem lies in the clutches. With worn clutches, heavy throttle, and/or oversize tires, the clutches are no longer able to effectively slow the axle shafts; this results in the latching action being quite violent. This inadequate braking is responsible for the failure mode of gov locks. The 14-bolt version is quite a beefcake and is very robust, but the 10/12 bolt versions are notorious for failures. If you have one, I highly recommend replacing it at soonest convenience. For a normal street/winter vehicle, an Eaton True-Trac would be perfect. For an off-road or heavily worked truck, a Detroit no-spin would be likewise a good choice. Just my 0.02, take it or leave it.

The anchor peice that the spinning "Gov" locks on to also moves with centrifugal force so it will swing out of the way when the carrier is rotating to fast so that the "Gov" will not catch it to activate the locker. That way it will not lock at high speeds and damage it self or cause both tires to break loose on wet road surface at high speed.

You are super close to explaining the G80 Locking diff. or Gov Loc. Also this is considered a LSD, it has clutches that have a low preload on them, at least my 70s GM truck was. When the govenor opens and locks on to the tab it caused a ramp to move to increase psi on the clutch packs to lock the diff under power it does not lock to the spider gears. Also it will only lock under 25mph, above that speed +/- the govenor spins out so that it will not latch the tab. This is a good diff but does not like to have tires over 33inches on them.

Close. it uses an engagement governor to stop the cam plate from rotating in the differential case, if axle speeds vary by 100 RPM or more. This forces the side gears outward, applying pressure to the clutches. The lockout governor disables locking action at vehicle speeds over 50 km/hr (30 mph).

My Ram '15 2500 has a AAM 9.25" front and AAM 11.5" rear diff with the auto locking diff, same as in the Chevy/GMC's. It works ok at best. Many times only one wheel gets power. In my opinion one of these auto locking diff would work good in the front diff while having a Detroit Locker type in the rear. I plow snow, traction is essential. Having the factory Chrysler lifetime powertrain warranty is keeping me from swapping them out.

I just found out that i have this locker in my 02' Blazer ZR2. With the wheels jacked up & put in gear, the passenger side spins faster & locks up, disengages, then locks up & so on. I have a loud bearing sound & i changed my drivers side rear outer bearing that didn't fix the noise, which you can hear around 25mph, then it gets louder the faster you go. I have zero play with the drivers side rear, but the pass side & a little clunky in & out play. The noise definitely is wheel or diff noise but everything looked good inside with that locker. I'm hoping it's the passenger side rear outer bearing. This has me confused.

I believe it stays locked until you let off the gas and coast.
@orlandosparks831
@orlandosparks831 Жыл бұрын
when you ease off the gas pedal there is no longer torque being given which causes the weight to close and release the arm.. basically if you are in the snow at a dead stop and you hit the gas a little harder then normal, the counter weight do to the torque will open up and latch on to the locking arm and now both axles are locked together. Now people think you must go 120 rpm but thats not entirely true as the jerk motion of the shaft do to torque will cause weights to throw out. now ounce out the arm is now locking the axels together, so now your truck is moving in the snow with both wheels locked going same rotational speed off the line from dead stop, so now you are driving towards an intersection and you let off the pedal ( no more torque ) and the weights will now slow down and close and disengage the arm that it locked into and no more locking. Reason why this unit blows up is people don't drive it correctly ( me included ) as if you are going around a corner and gas it and there is a puddle or wet and haflway threw the turn your one tire spins and then you gas it up harder causing more torque the weights will throw out trying to lock the axles. Now remember you are going threw a turn so one axel is spinning more then other do to the turn ( if that makes sense ) so now your G80 is trying to lock up as one axel spins crazy fast ( the tire doing burnout do to water ) and other is turning do to dry pavement and axel locks up the spyder gears very violently. So this is where the bomb hits and you kill the spyder gear usually in 3 pieces. i blew mine after 283,000 miles. i have a 2007 ZL1 Avalanche that is cammed for towing and dynowed at 320 ponys at the wheels which are 20x12 rims and 33 inch tires. I DO NOT DO BURNOUTS OR SCREW AROUND bUT UNFORTUNETLY I DID find myself turning on to an multy lane road ( speed limit 40 ) that had cars doing 50mph and i was dead stop. so i got on it a little and there was a puddle and my inside tire spun and i got more on the gas and BANNGG!! it engaged hard. after that my rear started acting a little funny going around tight corners at low speed ( parking truck and stuff ) and i was getting wheel chirp. Finally after a week leaving taco bell drive threw its a long sweep turn just barely touching gas and rear started banging hard and now i felt it was stuck in lock. got it home and pulled cover and there are my spyder gears in 3 pieces on bottom of housing... SORRY FOR LONG POST...

Very interesting. This is the mechanical approach to limited slip. Most vehicles today use electronic traction control. When one wheel starts to spin the computer applies the brake to that wheel distributing power to the other. Electronic prevents you from intentionally breaking traction unless you manually disable it though.
@subradiant_music
@subradiant_music 9 жыл бұрын
Terrance Kenallen its annoying in bmws lol cause your rear end just slides over and sometimes the computer can't apply enough braking force to one side so its gonna spin anyway if you're on ice on either sides. It's not a limited slip at all, it's a locking differential a different category all together. Limited slip uses some form of clutches to tie the two wheels together thus giving you a limited amount of slip between the two wheels. A locking differential physically locks the two wheels together, zero slip. Lockers do however have some way of unlocking to allow the wheels to spin independently. The GM locking differential has managed to combine an open differential with a Detroit style locker. The flyweight mechanism he shows in the video is just a sensing system telling the it when to lock up, the actual locking mechanism is behind the side gears hidden from veiw. I have owned several trucks with these locked and in my experience they work brilliantly, I think most of the complaint come from people who don't understand the conditions in witch they are supposed to lock up.

Wondering what the problem is with my 2004 Chevy 4x4. When I engage the 4 wheel drive, the front really binds up when turning, this situation has gotten worse and worse over the years, it's now really bad, it almost stops my truck or requires more then usual engine power to engage to make a turn, and it almost feels like something is going to break. It has 230k miles, used synthetic oil in both the differential and transfer case. I've owned the truck since new, changed the oil twice. Oil levels are up. Anybody care to share reasons what my problem could be? I've had a mechanic check it and he said something is wrong with my differential, don't now if he is correct. It does work in 4wheel, it also makes a small grinding noise when going straight, and it seems to require more than normal horse power to drive it in 4wd, it use to not be that way. Jan. 7, 2018.
@michaelamos2789
@michaelamos2789 5 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't be driving in 4WD on dry pavement. Your truck does not have a center differential that allows this, so any binding or scrubbing that occurs when turning in 4WD on dry pavement is actually normal. Now, it's certainly not good for the drivetrain when it does this, which is why you shouldn't be in 4WD on dry pavement. If it's binding up or scrubbing while traveling in a straight line, this is most likely caused by mismatched tire sizes or tires that are unevenly worn (for example, having very worn tires on the front axle and brand new ones on the rear, or vice versa.) This is because the tires each have a different diameter (either due to mismatched sizes or differing levels of tread wear) and roll at different speeds. Again, with no center differential your truck does not allow for different wheel speeds between the front and rear axles. Hope this helps!

I converted a 2004 Chevrolet Express 3500 shuttle bus into a camper. I will be using in snow, beach sand and desert sand. I was in snow last week and the right wheels sunk of the road into a snow bank and the right tires just spun and they are all I had to get myself out. Those Stupid left ones just sat there and laughed at me. So, if I want good traction in those conditions, I would need a differential that would switch to the tires with the better traction but I know for a fact I don't want the axles to lock because if they are both spinning, the vehicle will just slide off the road as neither side has tires in control. I always want one side rolling while the other is digging in. So what type do I need? What is it called? Limited Slip or Posi traction or what? Thanks!

Like countless others have pointed out to you... you’re wrong. The flyweights catch the pawl mechanism under 25mph (above 25mph the counterweight on the pawl moves it out of the way). When that happens they cause a ramping plate to energize clutch packs on both spider gears. That block in the middle allows the ramping plate to energize both clutch packs. “During normal driving conditions, the MLocker (G80) functions as a light-bias limited slip differential. When a low-traction situation occurs that causes a wheel speed difference greater than 100 RPM, a flyweight mechanism opens to engage a latching bracket. The stopped flyweight triggers a self-energizing clutch system, forcing a cam plate to ramp against a side gear. Cam plate ramping will continue to increase until both axles turn at the same speed (full lock), which prevents further wheel slip. When the need for improved traction is gone - unlocking occurs automatically and the differential resumes normal operation.” www.eaton.com/us/en-us/catalog/differentials/mlocker.html

Take your Vin # to your local GM or Chevy dealership and they can print you the original build sheet from the factory. That will tell you if it has a locking rear diff

Can I install one into a 2019 Silverado that came without one though? Or is the housing different too? Trying to buy a truck, and it doesn't have a posi rear end, so I'm trying to figure out if I need to look elsewhere, or if I can retrofit it.

Does this limited-slip differential make lots of noise, or cause a loss in performance under normal running on the road or turning. I want to retrofit it on my car, but don't want to suffer on road performance.

I have a 95 GMC SIERRA with limited slip unit. Is this the same unit as mine. Or does mine have springs and clutches? Also can mine be rebuilt? I can't seem to find any information on rebuilding, or buying a new or rebuild OEM unit. Mine has over 300 thousand miles on it. It has 29" tires on with 3.42 gears. I want to add some BF Goodrich All Terrain tires. The smallest one's the sell for a 15" rim is a 31" tire. I did the math and have to replace my 3.42 gears with 3.73 gears to keep my torque ratio the same with the new tires. So while I'm replacing the ring and pinion gears I might as well rebuild the limited slip unit. I can't find a new or a remanufactured OEM unit. I was interested in the new maintenance free worm gear drive limited slip units. But I read online that with those units if on tire is off of the ground the other tire won't spin so maybe okay for cars, but not for trucks. Plus other after market and maybe some OEM units have springs and clutches the need to be rebuilt I don't know how often. I know my OEM unit has lasted at least 320,000 miles without needing a rebuild yet. I like that. But what really sold me on staying with OEM, is a video I seen here on you tube, that show how well an OEM works. It was a 2 wheel drive truck that looked like mine. It showed the truck in a situation where on rear tire was off of the ground spinning in the air, then you hear a click in the rear end the the other tire, the one on the ground starts to move, and so does the truck, and it gets out of that situation and drives off. After seeing that video. I'm sold on staying with OEM limited slip unit. Again. My truck is a 95 GMC SIERRA EXTENDED CAB 2 wheel drive truck with a 3.42 10 bolt limited slip differential. So I need to know while I'm changing my gear ratios, is there any way to rebuild my stock unit, does it have springs, weights, or clutches that need to eventually be replaced? If so. Where can I find the parts and information to do the job. Or where can I buy a remanufactured OEM unit. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

With a limited slip, both rear wheels will break free and lose traction. Depending on suspension alignment and slight steering input, it will slide one way or the other.

That is the "right hand rule" of torque. If you take your right hand and spin the top away from you, your thumb points to the left, which is the direction of the "push" of the torque causing the rear of the car to slide right which makes the car turn to the left. www.google.com/search?q=torque+right+hand+rule&rlz=1C1ASUM_enUS843US843&oq=torque+right+hand+rule&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.4423j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Outstanding demo! I have one in each of my 3/4 GM Trucks and they both work great. I have a dumb question: GM calls it an "LSD" Locker. From your demo, I see no clutches or friction plates that a typical LSD has. Does the G80 have clutches and plates, and such, or just the locking mechanisms you demonstrated? Thank You!

@Imustfly 2 жыл бұрын
Yes....the G80 has two clutch packs,...one on the backside of each of the two side gears. Engagement of which is governed by a ramped side gear/cam gear combo on ONE of the side gears....the other side gear has a clutch pack, but no ramping mechanism. The power from the ramped side gear clutch pack is transferred to the other clutch pack, via the central transfer block.

@1965chevell

Actually your explanation is completely 100 percent incorrect. The governor doesn't spin to engage it spins to disengage the limited slip operation after 25 mph. The gov lock part when spinning actually UNLOCKS the differential at approx. 25 miles per hour. Anything under 25 and the differential is effectively locked but with the limited slip operation fully functional for going around turns etc. After 25 it unlocks and you then have an open differential with only one wheel being powered for better mileage and safer operation in the rain or at higher speeds. The G80 simi-float 9.5" is a very good differential no matter what others say about it. It's not made for doing burn outs in the mud while spinning around in circles but it can indeed handle big tires. It's made for simple straight line traction below 25 miles per hour and efficient operation after 25.

@rodpalm6398

That clunking you hear is from free play in the ring and pinion gear due to high mileage and heavy towing, probably without anyone ever changing the gear oil.

I've had 3 of these explode on me and tear apart the whole carrier housing. The first one even punched a hole in the housing it was that bad. Note how thin the rods are that the weights ride on. Worst design ever and GM has been using them for a long time. Not meant for serious use. Bring back the old clutch plate style posi traction or just replace it with a Yokon or other serious posi traction or locker depending on what you want to do. Also, note that a special lubricant is needed can't just use the normal rear grease. And yes, the grease should be changed at regular intervals. I love my Bowties but this design sucks! Nothing against your tutorial on how this works Van. I think it was spot on and quite helpful for those with this system. Just voicing my dissatisfaction with this design and maintenance needed for it. Still, it may fail you in the most inopportune moment even with normal driving.

the diff doesn't really make any noise though you can chirp the tires depending on conditions. my example of having that happen was one wheel on snow and the other on pavement while pulling out from curb side parking.

I have a 03 Sierra with this diff and I can tell you I don't hear a thing when it locks, but I can tell you I defiantly know when its working. It will only lock while on the power and when it dose, say while gassing it in the middle of a right hand turn around a corner, you hear the inside wheel chirping and feel and back hop a bit. If your too aggressive the rear will slide and you will start going sideways.

MrIslandguy46 When you learn to take it easy turning it's actually a good rear end. Also its easier on tires than a limited slip because when you drive it easy its an open diff. Now as for the snow I have no experience as I live in Louisiana, but in muddy fields it works very well. I've pulled my friends 2wd Ford with an open diff out with my Sierra 2wd with the locker. I will say this though, I think the locker would have been better if it were an electric one like in Toyotas and activated with a switch rather than automatic.

You should probably change the fluid in the differential, just make sure to remove the cover and redo the seal. Your going to want to check for metal shavings and if they're present, remove them. And check the bearings for damage. Basically just spin the differential with your hand and if you hear anything else but the gear teeth then consider getting the bearings and seals replaced.
