Friday Fun - Korg MS 20 + Lyra 8 Synth Jam

Its Friday and that means Synth Jam! At least on some Fridays anyhow. This time we fire up the Korg MS20 and pair it with the Soma Labs Lyra 8 together with the Ventris Dual Reverb (yeah that again) and the Arturia Keystep.

Your EP is beautiful Nick. Frozen Memories sounds so vast. Nice jam too, I run a Volca FM and M32 through a Boss Rv-6 ....but that Ventris reverb is something else.

That idea to toggle Lyra with the gate signal is brilliant. So many opportunities for lonesome guitarists for example. I wonder if Lyra has any internal means to produce uneven patterns, like a sample and hold maybe?

bukkara tsuppa you can use the hyper lfo for that to some degree, but it's definitely limited

Its pretty good, ass far as it can be compared to some 30+ year old electronics. My favourite was the MS20 Desktop - all that the MS20 perhaps should have been

LYRA was designed in Russia and is manufactured in Russia and Poland. (Information from the official site)

what? you got rid of your MS-50!!! Can't believe it. I started my "MS trip" in 78 with a MS20 but promptly got the whole shenanigan (MS10,SQ10,MS50) as a perfect fit to compensate the sale of my Roland System 100 (still sadly regretted)

Great story! Please Nick can I ask a question? For deep bass Erebus or neutron? Bass will be main purpose maybe lead, but deep bass? Turn your synths on...lol good advice

Thats a tough call, I think perhaps Neutron - more waveforms and more synthesis oscillators sound very nice too. I do love the Erebus, there's just something about it, but the Neutron also has a certain something

it has PW not PWM as you cant modulate it.

Yes, you can. Unlike the MS20, the MS50 has a PWM patchpoint on it's single oscillator! I know cause I've used it :)

That deal was for a Jupiter 6. If you recall, he swapped his (now completely worthless) 4-channel Protools interface for the MS-20, MS-50 and an SQ-10. MS-50 is currently selling for $1-3K, Jupiter 6 at $4-5K. Your move. :)

Ok, that "ukrainian" notion got me a little... unsettled, shall we say, so i went googling, and: > SOMA was established by Vlad Kreimer, a radio engineer and a musician who lived in Donetsk, Ukraine, and later moved to Moscow, Russia, after war broke out in the city. somasynths.com/about-soma/ Well, the only part played in the history of this synth by those hate-glittering bunch of separatists, that call themselves ukrainians and since 1991 occupy (to a devastating effect) the vast south western part of my country, was to make another able russian become russian by residence. And most likely, passport. And believe me, Vlad's story is not an uncommon one at all.

Please more iPad stuff. You are missing so many insane synths, effects, DAW improvements etc etc. I would get hardware if I had tons of cash, but with my iPad and a few controllers, it would be fun to have hardware synths but, I have the same thing, as far as sounds and way more as far as portability and I can perform anything with no limit. I feel like I have sooo much more flexibility. I can go from one setup to another so quickly. With hardware I have to go out and buy synths to get what I want and come home and spend a day setting things up hoping I have all the stuff necessary. With an iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPhone 7+, i have it all

stocchinet they used to do more iPad/IOS. I like this channel because they are open to everything to do with music and that nick is very knowledgeable and smart. They have a good variety of guests, which is fun. Just watch nick in action on the synths. He looks right at home.

I have it all as far as IOS. I have other stuff but I am making a point. I am always open to things. I don’t like to spend a ton if money if I don’t have to. My goal is to be able to make music and i find that with iOS I have much more for the money. If I was rich I would have hardware too, but in my low budget, ios has it all for me. I am tempted to get the new synth by IK Multimedia.

Using the Lyra 8 as a stable backing track and using the MS20 as the lead is pretty safe (lame). Reverse engineer this, use the Lyra as the source of melodie and use sample and hold in the MS20 as the backing. Way more interesting.
