I worked for United close to 30 years, it’s ridiculous but I get a small tear in my eye watching this

And here's a little background on the song: "'Mother Country' was written over one weekend in 1973 by Jerry Liliedahl and Jack Smith for the Leo Burnett agency, who represented United Airlines for many years. In the previous year's campaign, United used Woody Guthrie's 'This Land is Your Land,' but the following year the Guthrie estate requested an exorbitant amount of money from United if they wanted to continue using their song. The Burnett agency decided to write their own song. 'Mother Country' was voted as Advertising Agency's Song of the Year in 1973. It still holds up beautifully today."

Interesting that not only flying back in that day was classy but the advertising was classy as well. Oh how times of changed.

One of my favorite commercials for anything. Ever. Beautiful. Inspiring.

This beautiful, young gal is Bonnie Koloc. She's a midwestern gal who got her start at The Earl of Old Town in Chicago, circa 1970. She still performs frequently, primarily in Chicago, Iowa & Wisconsin. She had a regional hit in the early 70's with a song called Burgundy Wine - check it out and other Bonnie Koloc songs on You Tube. She also has her own website.

This is Bonnie Koloc of Chicago. She's still singing, 40 years later! Check out her other videos on KZfaq.

Singer Bonnie Koloc has a beautiful voice. I think her style is folk music which I like very much!

For anyone interested: I found the full, non-branded "single" cut of this song, re-titled "Mother Country," also performed by Bonnie Koloc (the performer in the "Friendly Skies of Your Land" UA commercial above). There's a really beautiful bridge in the full version of the song which is never featured in any of the United/commercial versions: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ocxja6Vj29rFnHk.html

I've had the vinyl album of it since it came out in about 1974

Burgess Meredith was narrator on the commercial. He portrayed trainer Mick in 'Rocky' films! The irony!

This is a Fantastic commercial song. Why hasn't United Airlines revived it? I remember watching this in the 70's; it was great then!

I think this commercial represents the mood, values, and attitude of its time. It promotes pride and interest in the whole country, with the airline taking the role of ambassador to domestic lands. The internet didn't exist, so you had to go somewhere to experience it. And widebody aircraft were new and glamorous. Now, commercials for airlines, if they do exist in our fragmented media, would promote low airfares because the internet has turned everyone into a travel agent. So why doesn't United revive it? The average media consumer wouldn't find it compelling.

yes, that is indeed Burgess Meredith. One really nice touch is that you get a second of silence at the end, which is unusual.

FrendlySky Thank you for documenting this commercial. No offense but perhaps someday this video will be remastered and converted to an HD quality presentation. If I had the skills to do so, I would. I think this commercial is on par with Coke's "World to Sing" spot.

Which one of these commercials came first. The one right here, or the one that begins with Angela Cartwright singing a more uptempo version of the jingle and then she is joined by more and more singers until there's a whole crowd singing with her?
@mrtodd36204 жыл бұрын
I would guess the other one came first. That way, people already had the words in their heads when they watched this one, which is more advanced and nuanced.
