I remember one time we went to buy a car. The salesman only spoke to my husband as if I wasn't there. He finally said to the man, you need to talk to her, she makes the final decision. Then the man changed his tune. Thanks for sharing your day.

Wow, I’m not alone in finding it impossible to make new friends. I’m alone in Florida, been here only 3 years. Its been much harder than I thought to find new friends.

Hi! Have you looked online? There are groups in different locations that meet up monthly-- some are by professional interest, by hobby, by town, by church or synagogue. Please don't get discouraged. I live in Maryland and am also seeking friendship with adults; just casual, enjoyable conversations or going out for theater!

I'm not of any particular religion..but when I lived in Florida I joined the Unitarian congregation. We had many, many activities going on. Pot luck at each others home, walking for a cause, theater, book club, etc, etc. If I hadn't found this intellectual group of people I would have been an unhappy camper in Florida. And of course there was the club house and swimming pools where I lived. I moved back north cause I missed my daughter and grandchildren. I also got involved teaching English one on one to Spanish ladies. Good luck. No one should be friendless❤

When my husband and I moved to a new neighborhood we met a lot of neighbors walking our dog. We would always know the dog's names but it took us awhile to learn the owners' names! About 6 months after my husband died a neighbor's husband across the street died. I reached out to her to help her through and we have become friends. Reaching out to help a neighbor is always a good thing.

Thank you Sandra. Your videos always calmly inspire me. I know what you mean about drs and nurses looking at your daughter to give instructions to rather than you, who are the owner of your pet or your SELF. I had been giving my sister ( a year older, with many dibilitating issues and in a wheelchair, yet fiercely independent ) rides to her Dr appts. I would go with her into the little consultation rooms to push her wheelchair. They would come in the room, greet us and then look at ME and talk ABOUT her. It was pretty subtle.. and I guess I didnt realize it. But one day she said to me " do you notice that they do that, like Im not even there"?. I hadnt. From then on, I was hyper aware. After the initial greeting I stopped looking at them. I would focus on her.. and then so did they. I had forgotten about that. In my keto /Carnivore community, we talk about how we seem to have lost control of our own medical care, as Drs assume we dont have choices about our care. Our motto is "RESEARCH and BE the Captain of your OWN ship". Stay as healthy as you can be. The mental clarity is amazing! And youll be no longer requiring their services. Im going to be 67 next month and on low carb for 5 yrs. Im off all meds, reversed pre diabetes, high bp, sleep apnea and lost 80 lbs. And Ive never felt better! I feel like Im 40! May God Bless and keep us all learning truth.

Thank you for sharing your day with us. I love how you cherish the simple things - simple but enjoyed. I adopted my dog about 2 years ago after not having a pet for 25+ years. I also live in a condo, so walk her 3X a day. She brings me such joy. Besides the love she gives me, I get to know my neighbors, their dogs, feel the changes in the seasons, and enjoy the ebb and flow of the nature around me. I am grateful. ❤

Sandra you are so right. I notice this when I go out with my Mom. She is visually impaired so it takes her a while to do things at the cash register etc. And people take to her very loud, and also as if she were a child. That bothers me because she is as sharp as ever. I think it's up to us to re-education people on how to treat our elders. Also, as usual your wisdom is on point. ❤

When I was doing private duty and being at a doctor's appointment with a client the nurse started talking loud to him and using baby talk. I just stared at her and said. Why are you yelling and talking to Mr.R like that?? He had the biggest smile on his smile. It's OK. It's OK Rita. I guess I was fed up having people talk down. Not very classy on my part, but hey😂 Now at 84 there's occasions when I'm ignored😂 or talking to differently. Thank goodness though, that I'm not turning into my father. He tried to educate the younger generation when he felt he was looked upon as just an older handsome gentleman. Lol😂 he was super classy and funny.

Oh wow your comment/observation about how store staff/people in general "bypass" older humans, assuming they don't pay the bills or manage expenses of the house (and instead defer to a younger person who is with them), was so insightful about our culture (it happens here in Australia too!). I love how you remained graceful in expressing this, but it does highlight the hidden assumptions we have about people who have spent more time on this planet. I appreciate how you create videos that show how capable, kind, fun, energetic and cheeky we can all be as we get older. Thank you! Wishing everyone here a wonderful week 🥰

I've noticed people do that to seniors and children. In the process of assuming a lot, they show disrespect and, IMO, cluelessness. The worst part is they're not bothering to assess the persons awareness. They just assume because of the physical appearance. Come on! Didn't that guy know who he was talking to!! Apparently not! Nice vid, Sandra, as always. Thank you. 🧡💃

Hi Sandra Love the walkabout. My two closest lifelong friends live far away - even though we text and phone it’s not the same as having them live close by. I miss them and wish we could visit at each others houses like we did back in the day. I have learned to enjoy “friendly contacts” from people in my life who are not personal friends but who I have known for years because I see them on a regular basis- hair stylist, skin care facialist, cashier at market. I live in a neighborhood of dog walkers too and a friendly hello makes a feeling of community. I just turned 73 and your ❤ videos are helping me to come to acceptance on that which falls away over time and what comes to us next if we let it in.

This is very true. I believe the reason they do this, is because it's similar to a mother and child scenario. It doesn't offend me, it saddens me a bit, that I've lost my full independence. That is why they do go with us and so I take comfort in knowing I have someone who cares enough to do that. It is a good thing to have and it gives them purpose, and compassion. One day they will be in our shoes and how blessed they are to see how one ages graceful.

You look so lovely, you are glowing, Sandra. I’m 53 and you have more of a social life than I do! 😊 I agree about meeting people through walking your dog. And I have to add it is so refreshing to see someone with minimal makeup. I also wear minimal during the day now that I’m bit older, I apply makeup up when I go out. Oh Sandra I also have to add that when my son and I went to have our Covid shots the doctor continually talked to him! Totally ignored me…my son is only 22. I just couldn’t understand it. I questioned whether it was because I was grey…and looked older, but refused to believe that was the case. I thought about it for days and yes, that was the reason. I was offended, especially since I feel young. It was something I wasn’t prepared for!❤❤❤

My mother used to talk to me about ageism and I made sure that when she was with me ,the people addressed her by directing the conversation towards her when she was in her 80s and early 90s. Because, like you, she was a vivacious , beautiful, strong and lively woman and it hurt her feelings that people no longer addressed her. Thanks for bringing up the subject. My mother is now gone but here I am at 65 beginning to feel the same problem as though I were invisible.

It’s nice you’ve met people through walking your dog. I go to Silver Sneakers three times a week and have made new friends as well as the Bible studies I attend. I agree about joining clubs…I made new friends playing mahjong at our community center. It’s a great idea about having a pen pal if one is housebound. Also if a person is able, it’s nice to invite neighbors or friends over for tea or coffee.

Interesting video to ponder, Sandra. My take is that we can inadvertently give off signals that we are not in charge. An example... Recently I went to an oncology consult with my sister. I was quite impressed that the doctor always addressed her, except when directly answering one of my questions. It could have gone the other way. He could have assumed that someone had to accompany her, because she was not able to handle the situation on her own. Wrong assumpution, but easy to make. The lesson I've learned? Life is a lot more simple, when we make the effort to always 'show' people who we really are. Don't make them guess. It helps them and it helps us. Thank you, Sandra!

Good morning from Arkansas … a great video… thanks for sharing about no makeup and your day in general. One of my daughters modeled when she was a teenager. Her close friends knew all the makeup was only applied on show / work days, yet there would be others that thought she looked like the runway everyday. The skin needs to breathe more than be covered up. As a nurse I was trained to ask patients and family members “ once you are home, who will be the caregiver for ___?” Then I knew who to share post hospital care with and start training in procedures or care they’d be doing once they are home. All my daughters are quick to let people know “ mom will be doing this or that”. I get tickled by the way they don’t sit by and allow me to be ignored. Thanks for sharing about writing to our military. When my oldest daughter was in Army Basic Training I ask her to give me names of the ones that never received mail. There was one young man who was raised by older grandparents. I started writing him, then was able to meet him and his grandparents at their graduation. My daughter told me the grandparents never wrote him a card or letter. I can’t imagine doing that to my family. Anyway, there are multiple opportunities to connect with the military members. Some are there by court order, some are trying to make a better life for themselves…the reasons of “no mail received” list is long. I think it’s awesome your daughter is with you and you have a sweet furbaby to love and share life with. Take care of yourself and your beautiful plants.

I have found as we age less makeup looks much prettier.I used to do the black eyeliner etc but it makes me look haggard so now just some lipstick and concealer and go. Mascara makes my eyes water and itch so none. You look pretty all the time because #1 you are pretty and #2 your inner light shines through. Bless You Sandra

The story of the vet talking to your daughter reminded me of when my teenage nephew was in a band with some buddies. He asked Mother to drive him to the music store to look at amplifiers. The salesman began telling Mother about the attributes of each one, but she interrupted him, saying, "He's the one buying it", and walked to another part of the store. Apparently he thought that "Grandma" was going to buy it for him!

Hi Sandra, you've really hit the nail on the head here. I'm 66 and if my daughter accompanies me to the vets, or any work I've had done on the house, or taking my car for a service, they look to her and ignore me. It really annoys me. It makes me feel invisible. Thank you so much for your video xxx

Thank you, Sandra, for this inspiring message. On Tuesday’s I volunteer at a church soup kitchen feeding the homeless and needy. I love it! On Wednesday’s I have an art class for 3 hours at the senior center. I have met some very nice people and am included now in “the artsy” world with very talented, creative artist - just what I dreamt about before I retired. And, church on Sunday’s with close friends. ❤️. Lastly, spending time with my son when we can as he is very busy with his job. It’s important for each one to “make it a great day”.🌸. You look beautiful as always.

Also any local nursing home and hospital has people without family or family that are not nearby to visit regularly. I knew a retired nurse that baked 5 dozen sugar cookies every morning and distributed them at the local hospital she had retired from. She did that as long as she could.

Thank you Sandra for sharing your activties and uplifting message. Please let your son know that most cities, through their Parks and Recreation Dept offer toddler and parent classes. In addition, many of the YMCA's also offer classes for toddlers and their parents. I have seen men of various ages attending. Afternoons at the park is another way of meeting 'dads' with toddlers.

Since I am alone…there is no one to go with me to appointments…and I still am invisible to the world. Another good idea you have regards a penpal! A humbling revelation occurred this week…I had a phone conversation with an ex co-worker and she shared with me that people always hated working with me and did not like me. WOW! I really had no idea…I feel like such a loser now and such a joke to be so unaware. I need to work on my presentation…no wonder I have NO close friends. This info was hurtful but in the long run helpful…if it’s to be it’s up to me to reach out. It’s recentering to be humbled.
